The Argon 18 Dark Matter Rival AXS XPLR Bike is Argon 18's flagship carbon gravel platform, built for riders who want a bike that handles race-day pace on gravel and holds up just as well on extended adventure routes. The Montreal-based brand has been engineering performance bikes since 1989, and the 2025 Dark Matter consolidates several proprietary technologies into a gravel-specific frame — 57mm tire clearance, integrated internal storage, a compliance system developed through individual frame analysis, and a fit architecture that covers more riders without external compromises. At $4,999, it's built around the SRAM Rival XPLR AXS E1 groupset, a 13-speed wireless 1x drivetrain that defines the current benchmark for gravel performance at this price.

Frame Engineering: TCS, 3D System, and Integrated Storage

Four of Argon 18's core technologies are built into the Dark Matter frame. The Topological Compliance System — TCS — is the most consequential for how the bike actually rides. It's a proprietary engineering method that analyzes each frame model individually to determine the optimal carbon layup topology for vertical compliance. Rather than applying a single compliance strategy across a product line, Argon 18 optimizes the fiber orientation and layup schedule for the Dark Matter specifically, targeting maximum absorption of road-induced vibration at the seatstays and rear triangle without introducing lateral flex that would bleed power during hard pedaling efforts. On a gravel bike ridden for hours on mixed surfaces, the difference between engineered compliance and stiffness-at-all-costs is felt in the lower back and hands well before the halfway point of a long day.

The 3D System addresses fit range. Argon 18 designed the head tube to accept up to 35mm of additional stack adjustment, giving each size a published stack range rather than a single fixed figure — the medium, for example, spans 582mm to 606mm of stack. This lets riders dial in position meaningfully without resorting to external spacers or steep-rise stems. Internal cable routing is fully integrated for both mechanical and electronic drivetrains. The Integrated Toolkit goes further: Argon 18's layup opens up the downtube for accessible internal storage, giving the rider a place to stow tools, nutrition, or small items without a frame bag attached.

SRAM Rival XPLR AXS: 13-Speed Wireless, Full Mount Derailleur

The Rival XPLR AXS E1 rear derailleur uses SRAM's Full Mount interface — a design choice with real-world consequences. Traditional derailleur mounting uses adjustment screws that can vibrate out of spec on rough gravel, requiring regular re-tuning. Full Mount has no adjustment screws; the derailleur clamps rigidly to the frame and holds its position regardless of what the terrain does to it. Combined with wireless AXS shifting — no cables through the frame, no mechanical connections to corrode or stretch — the drivetrain is designed to require less intervention across a riding season. The 40T single chainring paired with a 10-46T 13-speed cassette covers the full range from sustained climbing to road-speed transitions between sections. The bottom bracket is SRAM DUB T47 Wide: a threaded interface that eliminates the creak and bearing longevity issues associated with press-fit standards. SRAM Rival AXS hydraulic disc brakes run 160mm Centerlock Paceline rotors at both ends.

Wheels, Tires, and Cockpit

DT Swiss G1800 XDR wheels are the stock choice here — alloy gravel hoops built for durability, with DT's Ratchet freehub system and wide rims sized for tubeless setup. They're not carbon, which is appropriate for a bike positioned for adventure use where wheel resilience matters as much as weight. The Schwalbe G-One RX PRO in 700x50c tubeless-ready is a race-oriented gravel tire with paired outer blocks for cornering traction on technical surfaces and a souplesse casing that smooths the ride over irregular terrain. The frame clears 57mm, leaving meaningful room to run wider tires if the route calls for it. The FSA A-Wing Pro AGX handlebar is a flared aero drop bar designed for gravel positioning. The Argon 18 TDS-C seatpost — TDS standing for Tunable Deflection System — is a carbon post engineered to flex vertically for comfort on long rides while staying laterally stiff under pedaling load, working in concert with the TCS frame compliance rather than against it.

Three Colors, Six Sizes

The Dark Matter Rival AXS XPLR is available in Anthracite, Root Beer, and Cactus Green across six sizes from XXS to XL, covering rider heights from roughly 44cm to 62cm seat tube. Pedals are not included. The Rival XPLR AXS build sits between the Force XPLR AXS version above it and the Shimano GRX configuration below — it's the middle of the Dark Matter lineup and the right entry point for the rider who wants wireless shifting and a purpose-built carbon adventure frame without reaching for the Force price tag.

Defective toy and inconsistent quality.
Size: X-Large, Color: Raccoon, Size: X-Large, Color: Raccoon
My initial review was 5 stars based on my experience with a previous order (blue raccoon) and the fact my puppy was immediately interested in it. However, I did not give it to her to play with until this past Friday (May 21, 2026) because she had the first one I bought. In a matter of 2 days the seam on the back and at the base of the head unraveled and all of the stuffing was scattered all over the room. I thought I’d found some good, high quality, toys for her but apparently this one was defective because the first one had had a lot of use and I’d still in decent shape. This is too much money to pay for a dog toy that only lasts a day or two so be advised they aren’t all good.

Bigger, louder, crinklier, softer, than expected!
Size: X-Large, Color: Rabbit
My dog was gifted a collection of used toys and he really likes a very long stuffed pig which, unfortunately, another dog that is a destructive chewer, totally destroyed. I decided to break down and buy him another long stuffed toy today and since he's always blissfully watching rabbits in the yard and neighborhood I chose the rabbit version. This thing is huge which is great for him- he's 62 lbs and 7 months old and only half grown. He loves it, it has multiple LOUD squeakers, lots of crinkly spots, and fun ears/legs to grab hold off. He's a big fan and it's made with K9 Tuff Guard which LASTS. Super soft and easy to wash. Update after 2 months- easy to wash and looks new after a washing. very durable so far, standing up to indoor and outdoor use. He is not a destructive chewer but whips them around, tramples on them, steps on them while running top speed and chomps on the annoying squeaker for hours. one squeaker has a hole and its tune is now slightly muted (thank god)

Won't last forever, but my dog loves it
Size: X-Large, Color: Giraffe
My dog, a 90 lb black lab, LOVES these toys. He does prefer the raccoon to the giraffe, but he likes them both a lot. I originally got the raccoon on clearance at Target when looking for a long toy he could play with while he was in a cone recovering from surgery (he likes to be able to hold toys between his front paws and mouth/chew on them, so none of our regular squeaky footballs were long enough for that). He loved it so much I had to find more, so I found this giraffe from the same line of toys. He's a destroyer and he has been able to put a few holes in these toys if I'm not watching him, but they're pretty easy to sew if they need patching. My mother-in-law's dog came over and made a hole so big that the squeakers and lining all came out, but I sewed it back up and it's almost as good as new. They definitely won't last forever, but they have lasted longer than other soft toys we've had in the past.
