Kalanchoe panamensis (often sold under this name, though it is sometimes identified as Kalanchoe marnieriana) is a captivating and unique succulent that is a must-have for any plant enthusiast. Hailing from Madagascar, this plant is known for its beautiful foliage and its ability to thrive with minimal care. It's a fantastic choice for both indoor houseplant collections and outdoor succulent gardens in suitable climates.

Detailed Description

This leafy succulent forms a small, bushy shrub that can reach up to 18 inches in height and spread up to 3 feet wide. Its most striking feature is the paddle-shaped, fleshy leaves that are a beautiful blue-green color. In bright light, especially during the cooler winter months, the edges of the leaves can develop a lovely pink or red blush.

Kalanchoe panamensis is also known for a unique trait: it can produce thin, pinkish roots from the upper parts of its stems. When these roots reach the ground, they function as regular roots, helping the plant to spread and form a miniature forest-like cluster over time.

In late winter and early spring, the plant sends up long, elegant flower stalks with clusters of attractive, bell-shaped flowers that are typically a reddish-orange color. These blooms are a fantastic sight and are known to attract hummingbirds.

Growing Tips

Kalanchoe panamensis is a low-maintenance succulent that is forgiving of neglect, making it ideal for busy or forgetful gardeners.

  • Sunlight: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. Indoors, a south or west-facing window is an excellent location. If grown outdoors, it can handle full sun but may benefit from some afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorching in very hot climates. Insufficient light can cause the plant to become "leggy," with long, stretched-out stems and sparse leaves.

  • Fertilizing: This succulent doesn't require frequent fertilization. During its active growing season (spring and summer), you can apply a balanced, diluted succulent or flowering plant fertilizer once a month to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Temperature and Hardiness

As a native of Madagascar, Kalanchoe panamensis prefers warm, semi-dry environments.

  • Temperature: It thrives in temperatures between 50°F and 80°F (10°C to 27°C). It is not frost-tolerant and will not survive freezing temperatures.

  • Hardiness Zones: It is typically hardy in USDA hardiness zones 9-12. In colder climates, it is best grown as a houseplant and moved outdoors during the warm summer months.

Water Requirements

As a succulent, Kalanchoe panamensis stores water in its leaves and is drought-tolerant. The key to watering this plant is to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

  • Rule of Thumb: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Use your finger or a moisture meter to check the soil dryness.

  • Method: When you water, water deeply and thoroughly, allowing all excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot. A pot with excellent drainage is crucial.

Soil Preparation

Kalanchoe panamensis requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot.

  • Ideal Mix: A standard succulent or cactus potting mix is a perfect choice.

  • DIY Mix: You can create your own by blending regular potting soil with an inorganic amendment like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. A mix with a ratio of about 60% inorganic to 40% organic material is often recommended for optimal drainage.

  • Potting: Use a pot with a drainage hole. Clay or terracotta pots are excellent as they are porous and help to absorb excess moisture.

Propagation

Propagating Kalanchoe panamensis is a straightforward process, making it easy to expand your collection or share with friends.

  • Stem Cuttings: This is the most common and successful method.

    1. Using a clean, sharp knife or pair of clippers, take a healthy stem cutting that is at least a few inches long with a few leaves.

    2. Allow the cutting to "callous over" or dry out for a few days. This forms a protective layer that prevents rot.

    3. Once the end is calloused, plant the cutting in a pot with well-draining succulent soil.

    4. Place the pot in a bright, indirect light location and water sparingly until roots have formed.

  • Offsets/Plantlets: Some varieties of Kalanchoe produce small plantlets along their leaves. These can be gently removed and planted in soil to grow into new plants.

  • Leaf Cuttings: While possible, propagation from a single leaf has a lower success rate compared to stem cuttings. The process is similar to stem cuttings: remove a healthy leaf, let it callous, and then place it on top of or slightly inserted into the soil.

Excellent product, great for travel
Color: Cocoa
I just got back from a business trip and this is by far the most useful passport holder/wallet I've ever used. Lots of room for cards, bills, boarding passes, and a second passport and still folds very flat. Leather is good quality, and is very well put together. Since its too big for my pocket and will mostly live in my briefcase, I expect it to last a very long time. The only drawback is the high price, especially since the leather is probably not full grain (it's not advertised as full grain, so we can assume it's not). But it fits my needs perfectly, even if it is a little overpriced.

Highly recommend.

My favorite purchase for a recent trip across three continents. Fits in pocket (I mean it’s a tight fit, but it will fit). Perfect in cargo pant pocket. Has two separate compartments for paper bills which is nice - you can keep your home currency in one and travel currency in the other. Really sleek looking. Bought four of these and we all loved ours. Highly recommend.

Nice wallet. Just received it and used on trip to Italy
Too early to rate for durability, but it came quickly, looks nice, and appears to be well-made. Was a godsend on my trip to Italy and back. With all the times you have to show your passport (usually dragging your luggage with you), my passport was always at the ready, secure in my wallet in my pocket. I would not travel abroad without it. Not only that, it will serve as my daily wallet as well

Pen holder feature isn't good
Color: Cocoa
Edited review: previously I gave this a two-star review because when I inserted the pen into the pen holder the wallet couldn't close anymore... I tried taking it out putting it back in a few times and it seemed obvious to me that something was wrong and I just could not figure out why the wallet possibly was having an issue closing even though it's designed to hold a pen... To me it seemed obvious that when inserting the pen you should have the clip on the inside where are the bills go.... That single millimeter of space that that clip takes up in the bill fold causes the wallet to not be able to close properly so it springs open. Needless to say that felt extremely cheap for a product of this price and I was very unhappy and considering a return and after writing a bad review I happen to see product pictures with the clip on the inside of the wallet where your cards go and it dawned on me that I had just simply put the pen in in the wrong orientation. That completely solves the issue. So updated back to five stars, and the wallet is great. 2n update after using it for a week on an international trip so I was carrying my passport. Worked great - made me feel safe to always have my passport and room for all my most important documents inside a -just- large enough for a passport wallet. I really don't think they could have saved another millimeter and still made such a quality wallet. Having a micro pen in there is icing on the cake - makes you feel like James bond. I also felt safer having a hidden bill compartment so your not showing a fat stack of foreign currency (I mean depends on your use case but I was in some rather poor areas and this added some peace of mind and 'security' in my opinion). You can just keep some small bills up front and your real stack on the hidden flap. I won't dock a star for it - but keeping this on a back pocket so you're sitting on it because it's bigger and the way it holds cards after just one week there's already card imprints on the leather (just imagine your older leather wallets where the cards start wearing through the leather) Also I tested the RFD blocking and it indeed works. I'm unable to scan any cards through the wallet and that was an important feature to me. Even when the wallet is open and I ran scanners directly over cards (in the sleeves) it still didn't pick anything up.

Works
Color: Cocoa
Good wallet that can fit a passport, hold cash, and cards. “Hidden” pockets too, but that just means more storage space to me. Soft and supple leather that gets better when conditioned and cared for properly. Main feature I like is the RFID blocking, I only get wallets that have it. Expensive- yes. Works, also yes.
