Philodendron pastazanum

Philodendron pastazanum is a ground-creeping species in the Araceae family, with broad green leaves, long petioles and thick stems that move across the substrate surface. Mature leaves become large and broadly ovate to peltate, with visible venation and a wide blade held above the creeping stem.

The repent stem travels over the substrate and needs surface room as new leaves develop. A wide pot allows the plant to extend naturally while keeping the growth point above the mix.

  • Leaf shape: Broadly ovate to peltate green blades with a wide base.
  • Venation: Strong basal and lateral veins become clearer as leaves size up.
  • Growth habit: Thick creeping to repent stem that travels across the substrate surface.
  • Native range: Ecuador to Peru, associated with wet tropical forest.

Philodendron pastazanum care for creeping growth

Use a wide, stable pot for Philodendron pastazanum and keep the creeping stem visible above the mix. The roots need moisture and oxygen at the same time, so a chunky aroid substrate is safer than a dense, water-retentive potting soil.

  • Pot choice: A wide pot gives the creeping stem space to extend without being buried.
  • Light: Bright indirect light, with protection from direct sun that can mark the broad leaf surface.
  • Water: Water when the upper substrate has started to dry, then let the pot drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps large leaves expand with fewer dry edges.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally above 18 °C, and protect the root zone from cold wet conditions.
  • Substrate: Use a coarse aroid mix with bark, mineral structure and fibre around the roots.
  • Repotting: Repot when the creeping stem reaches the pot edge, roots fill the container, or the substrate starts to break down.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertiliser at diluted strength.
  • Growth rate: Growth is usually steady indoors, with larger leaves developing when the stem has room to travel.

Philodendron pastazanum pruning, propagation and mineral substrates

  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves close to the petiole base and keep the creeping stem above the substrate surface.
  • Propagation: Propagate from stem sections with at least one node and healthy root or aerial-root tissue.
  • Semi-hydro: Suitable for mineral or semi-hydro substrates if the rhizome-like stem stays above the medium and the roots remain oxygenated.
  • Training: Guide the stem across the pot surface rather than burying it into the mix.

Philodendron pastazanum stem, roots and broad-leaf issues

  • Soft creeping stem: Check whether the stem is buried or sitting against wet, compact substrate.
  • Yellowing leaves: Inspect roots if the mix stays wet deep in the pot.
  • Damaged leaf edges: Large leaves can mark from dry air, irregular watering or physical contact.
  • Root issues: Slow growth with yellowing leaves often points to poor drainage, compacted substrate or cold wet roots.
  • Pests: Check the leaf undersides, petioles and new growth for spider mites, thrips, mealybugs and scale.

Philodendron pastazanum safety and botanical background

Keep Philodendron pastazanum away from pets and children because its tissues contain calcium oxalate crystals. Sap may irritate sensitive skin.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott published Philodendron in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst 3: 780 in 1829; the genus name comes from Greek-derived roots meaning “tree-loving.” Philodendron pastazanum was described by Kurt Krause in Notizblatt des Botanischen Gartens und Museums zu Berlin-Dahlem 15: 42 in 1940. The epithet pastazanum is formed from Pastaza with the Latinized ending -anum, meaning “of” or “from” Pastaza.

In a wide container, mature Philodendron pastazanum develops broad peltate leaves above a thick creeping stem that stays visible at the surface.

Helps with redness and softens skin
I have sensitive, mild rosacea skin. Had a facial recently and the aesthetician suggested I get a serum to help with moisturizer as I am almost 40. I’ve tried a lot of serums and either they are sticky and not really hydrating or break my skin out in a rash. This serum is amazing. Helps calm the redness in my cheeks and my skin is moisturized and soft all day. It feels a little sticky at first but it goes away. I apply in this order OSEA sea mineral mist toner to prep the skin, this serum and top off with Chanel La Solution 10 for sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin
Such a good product. I use after micro needling when skin is sensitive. Also a great product to use as a barrier serum when starting tretinoin cream.

Saved my skin during an eczema flare up
This saved my skin! I had an eczema flare on my face, and my usual products weren’t working. A friend recommended the Avene brand and within 3 days of using this rescue barrier serum, my flare was almost completely gone! This saved my face!

PLEASE REVIEW — FORMULA CHANGED!!!
I wish I would’ve posted a review PRIOR to the formula changing but just know that I LOVED this serum. I’ve struggled with hormonal acne (PCOS) and eczema for as long as I can remember. Finally, last summer my dermatologist put me on (3) different RX including Spironolactone and Accutane. I was so tired so I stopped everything except for CeraVe cleanser, retinol (Tretinoin) and CeraVe healing ointment. My made up skin routine was working until I used too much Tretinoin and burned my face. I had read great reviews about this product so I thought, I might as well try it — and IT WORKED! I’ve been using this product for almost a year and I loved it. However, 3 weeks ago when I ordered it, I noticed the bottle had a green tint. I could tell after one use that the feel of the serum was different, more watery, not as thick as it used to be. The smell was also different. Still, I kept using it for nearly 2 weeks and I experienced 2 breakouts! Sure enough, I stopped the product and within a few days, my skin was back to normal. I am very upset because as someone who has extremely sensitive skin, this worked but unfortunately, the new formula isn’t for me.

I have found my HOLY GRAIL of makeup removers and face cleansers!
Scent: Unscented, Size: 6.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This has to be the best face cleanser/makeup removers I have ever used in my 42 years of existence. Now before I tell you about the product - let me tell you about my skin: Uber sensitive, oily T-section, very prone to breakouts, blackheads, eczema, blotches, allergic reactions, you name it. I just look at some cleansers and my skin breaks out. I wear contact lenses, and my eyes are sensitive too. Now the last thing I would ever think of putting on my face is anything that has an "oil" in it, yet alone a product that IS an "oil." First of all, logic dictates that oil and water don't mix, plus if you've ever dripped salad oil on your chin, you know it's impossible to get out - and your skin feels greasy even after 2 showers later. And then you break out with a pimple there because your pores got clogged. Right? Now getting back to this product. I was watching one of those shopping channels on TV, and this really pricey cleansing oil comes on. And the lady just rubs the cleansing oil into her skin with her dry fingers (no water) and the makeup just melts off. She rubs it into waterproof lipstick, takes a white cloth and the whole thing wipes right off in one swoop! Noo... that's impossible. Then she does it again on her eyes - dry hands, pumps a few drips of the oil into her hand, massages it into her eyelids, and within 10 seconds later even the waterproof mascara gets wiped away with the cloth. Now there was no way I was going to pay $120 a bottle for their cleansing oil, so I went on Amazon to see if there was a comparable alternative. I came across this DHC one and figured, what the heck? Wow! I cannot believe it - this stuff works incredibly! I did it the same way as on TV, and my eyeshadow, waterproof eyeliner, and waterproof mascara, even the glue from false eyelashes just comes right off. I just pump 2-3 pumps of oil in my hand, close my eyes, rub my face with this oil for like 10-12 seconds, feel around for the cotton pad on the counter without opening my eyes, and wipe away the oil around my eyes, lips. Then I cup my hands with warm water and splash it on my face several times. Supposedly you don't have to use water, but I do. The oil comes right off - no oily feeling at all. And my skin is smooth. Now this sounds crazy - but the blackheads around my nose area - 100% gone! Somehow this oil (over a week's time) works better than any clay mask I have ever used in removing clogged pores. Just in case you also wear contacts, you know contacts plus any oil is bad and makes red, itchy, dry eyes. So I usually remove my contacts (just in case) first, and then wash my face. Or if I have to put my contacts back in right afterwards, I do use a normal cleanser for my face afterwards in my eye area, just to ensure there's no trace of oil. So far (been through 3 bottles) I have not had any problems. No breakouts, no scrubbing to get off makeup, no itchy skin, no blackheads - actually I think it might be protecting my skin somehow because even during this itchy pollen season, I'm perfectly fine. Love love love this stuff!!!
