Ramps are a much-treasured harbinger of Spring. Often the first green vegetable to sprout after the long winter — and a healthy one at that — they are so beloved that many towns up and down Eastern North America celebrate a "Ramp Festival" upon their arrival. They have recently become a highly sought-after luxury item too, available for sometimes $25 per pound at high-end greengrocers from Brooklyn to Chicago (which actually got its name from the Algonquin word for ramps!) — leading to major fears of over-harvesting. Yet for generations these were considered "peasant food," and they are typically foraged from the wild rather than cultivated. The main reason they are rarely grown is simply a lack of patience: like other perennial vegetables, ramps from seed take years to reach full maturity — and need a deciduous woodland habitat in which most farmers are unused to cultivating crops. They also divide quite slowly. The rule of thumb when foraging a hidden, private patch of ramps is to only take — at most! — up to 1/7 of the plants each year, to allow for regeneration and maintenance of the patch. If a patch is being foraged by others, take far less. To be absolutely sustainable, a forager should only take one of the bright green, broad leaves (which are unusual for Alliums) and not disturb or remove the bulbs at all. Both the leaves and the pale, slender bulbs can be consumed though. Ramps have a milder, more delicate flavor than other wild onions, but are more pungent and flavorful than cultivated leeks or scallions. The best ramps boast notes of garlic as well.

GROWING TIPS: According to C. Dale Hendricks, who collected these seeds in the hills and dales west of Philadelphia, ramp seeds are typically "double dormant," which means they require two winters before germination. Sometimes they will germinate before winter, and the root will grow all winter, but the first leaves won't appear until Spring. Other times they will send out roots and shoots all at once in the Spring. Dale says the best way to get these seeds to germinate soon is to keep them vacillating between cooler and warmer temperatures, such as by keeping them in the fridge for a few days, then removing them, and so on. In milder climates, such as the Southeast, you might want to simply plant them on arrival and let nature take its course. But even with Dale's expert treatment, these seeds may still take a year or more to germinate. Once they do, resist the urge to harvest any for at least five years, and eventually you will be richly rewarded with a secret ramp patch of your own. (Choose a moist deciduous forest or the shadiest corner of your garden — but do not plant where the shade is provided by evergreen trees or shrubs, as ramps are spring ephemerals that rely on the dappled sun of spring before the tall trees leaf out.) For those who live in areas where this is a native plant, it is a great candidate for "guerilla gardening," or "reverse wildcrafting": find some good habitat, plant them, and keep coming back every year to check on them. Ramps are overharvested and therefore under threat across their range, so future generations will thank you.

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) published this excellent piece on growing ramps from seed which we highly recommend reading.

NOTE: Due to limited seed quantity, and stratification requirements, we have decided to not perform a germination test, so these are being sold as a "botanical sample."

Perfect Travel Size TSA approved size
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 2), Style: SPF 50
I recently bought the Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen SPF 50 Lotion in travel size for my son’s first trip to Cancun alone, and I have to say, it was a fantastic choice! Whether you're headed to a sunny beach, a day of fishing, or just need reliable protection from the sun, this sunscreen delivers. Here’s my review based on its performance during the trip: Convenience and Travel-Friendly: The travel size is perfect for anyone on the go. It’s small enough to meet TSA guidelines for carry-ons, so you don’t have to worry about checking luggage or dealing with oversized bottles at security. My son was able to easily pack it in his carry-on without any hassle. Additionally, the compact size makes it super convenient to throw into a pocket or backpack for a day of fishing, beach trips, or any outdoor adventure. Sun Protection: The SPF 50 provides excellent protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which is especially important for long hours spent in the sun. Cancun’s sun can be intense, and my son was out in the elements for several hours each day (and I wasn't there to remind him to reapply sunscreen), whether he was fishing, swimming, or just relaxing at the beach. He didn’t get burned once!! As a mother of a redheaded 18 year old son I've spent the past 18 years of my life ensuring he wasn't scorched by the sun and Coppertone has yet to let us down! Water Resistance: The water-resistant formula is a huge plus, especially in places like Cancun, where you’ll likely be in and out of the water. My son spent plenty of time swimming and snorkeling, and the sunscreen stayed put. It lasted through sweating, splashing, and even sea water exposure without needing constant reapplication. It’s perfect for active outdoor activities, whether you're swimming, surfing, or just sweating it out in the sun. Mother approved!!

Dries clear, moisturizing, silky, great value
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
I have fair to light combination skin. I use this on my body, but not my face. It goes on very thick and white, but sinks into the skin lightning fast (within just a few seconds), and it becomes completely invisible. It leaves my skin moisturized and looking and feeling silky. Best body sunscreen I've ever tried. And I love that it is water resistant! I find it too heavy and moisturizing to use on my face, but people with dry skin would probably love it for the face, too. I imagine it would be fantastic for them under makeup. The price per ounce is very reasonable, making it a great value.

Reliable Sun Protection for Active Days!
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
Coppertone SPORT SPF 50 is my go-to sunscreen for outdoor activities. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and stays on even when I’m sweating or swimming. The broad-spectrum formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays, giving me peace of mind during long hours in the sun. The 3 fl oz size is perfect for carrying in a gym bag, backpack, or beach tote, making it easy to reapply throughout the day. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky residue, which is great for sports or active adventures. Highly recommend for anyone who wants effective, durable sun protection without sacrificing comfort or mobility!

IT does protect from the sun.
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50
It protects from the sun without a doubt and lasts well. The downsides are that it leaves a greasy and "white" residue that no matter how much you rub it in.....it stays there. I use it when I am working outside and not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.
