Pachira aquatica

Pachira aquatica is a tropical wetland tree with palmate green leaves, smooth young stems, and a tree-like outline. Each leaf is divided into long leaflets arranged like fingers from a central point, giving the plant a lush but still tidy shape in a pot.

In the wild, Pachira aquatica grows in freshwater swamps, estuaries, riverbanks, and tropical rainforest habitats from Mexico into northern South America. Indoors it behaves as a manageable woody houseplant: it needs bright indirect light, regular moisture with oxygen around the roots, and a container that never traps stagnant water.

Indoor tree traits

  • Growth habit: A woody tropical tree that stays container-sized through pruning and restricted root space.
  • Leaf shape: Glossy palmate leaves carry several narrow leaflets from one central point.
  • Stem detail: Young stems are green to smooth brown and thicken gradually as the plant matures.
  • Wetland origin: Natural wetland habitats mean the plant dislikes total drought, but potted roots still need air.
  • Common names: Often called money tree, Malabar chestnut, Guiana chestnut, or saba nut in horticulture.

Wetland roots in a pot

Pachira aquatica is an accepted species in Malvaceae, the mallow family. Outdoors in frost-free tropical regions it can become a sizeable evergreen tree, but container plants remain far smaller and tolerate pruning well. New leaves usually appear from the stem tips, so cutting back a leggy shoot can encourage a fuller outline when the plant is actively growing.

Its native habitats are consistently moist, but indoor pots need a balance between water and air. In freshwater swamps, riverbanks, and estuarine edges, moisture is paired with moving water, open ground, and oxygen around the roots. In a closed pot, heavy wet substrate can turn sour quickly. A free-draining mix, a pot with drainage holes, and a steady watering rhythm keep moisture available without leaving the roots stagnant.

Care for steady palmate leaf growth

  • Light: Give bright indirect light, with soft morning or evening sun where available; very dim corners lead to weak, sparse growth.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has dried, then let excess water drain fully from the pot.
  • Substrate: Use an airy houseplant mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice, or similar drainage material.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually tolerated, while stable warmth and airflow matter more than constantly wet leaves.
  • Temperature: Keep above 15°C and protect from cold drafts, especially after watering.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer when new leaves are forming, then reduce feeding in slower winter growth.
  • Pruning: Trim overlong shoots in active growth to keep the plant balanced and encourage new side shoots.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, moving only one pot size up to avoid excess wet substrate around the root ball.

Leaf and stem warning signs

  • Yellowing leaves: Check for a pot sitting wet for too long, poor drainage, or cold roots after watering.
  • Drooping leaflets: Often points to dry roots or a sudden change in light, temperature, or watering rhythm.
  • Leaf drop: Can follow relocation, cold drafts, or repeated drought; stabilise conditions and avoid moving the plant often.
  • Soft stem base: Inspect immediately for root or stem rot, especially if the substrate smells sour or remains wet for many days.
  • Brown leaflet tips: Check watering consistency, mineral build-up, and hot direct sun through glass.

Flowering and fruiting indoors

Pachira aquatica may flower and fruit outdoors in tropical climates, producing large flowers and woody capsules with seeds, but indoor plants rarely reach that stage. As a houseplant, it usually shows its leafy crown and woody stem growth rather than flowers.

Pet safety and plant handling

Pachira aquatica is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Treat indoor plants as ornamental houseplants, and keep fallen leaves or pruned stems away from pets or children that chew plants.

What aquatica refers to

Pachira aquatica Aubl. was first published by Jean Baptiste Christophore Fusée Aublet in 1775. The genus name Pachira is derived from a Guyanese name, while aquatica refers to the plant’s association with water and wet tropical habitats.

Pachira aquatica develops the familiar money tree form through palmate green leaves, woody stems and steady indoor tree growth.

Incredibly Soft & Cozy Jersey Sheets!
Size: King, Color: Oatmeal
I am in love with these jersey sheets! They feel just like a worn-in, favorite t-shirt—soft, breathable, and oh-so-cozy. The fabric is stretchy but still holds its shape, and it keeps me warm without overheating. Even after multiple washes, the sheets haven’t pilled or faded, which is a huge plus. The deep pockets fit my mattress perfectly, and they stay in place all night. If you're looking for ultra-comfy, lightweight sheets that feel amazing against your skin, these are a must-have! Highly recommend!

You will want to sleep on these sheets!
Color: Adelia Gray, Size: Queen Extra Deep Pocket
Buy these sheets! I have only slept on 100% percale cotton. No blends, no sateen mix, just pure percale cotton which these sheets deliver. The finish is soft, not rough or scratchy as some describe. Cotton, is not rough. Percale, however, may not be. for everyone. They like a like iron to keep them unwrinkled and smooth. Some describe the finish as crisp. Again, crisp, is not scratchy. Crisp is an old-fashioned texture that appeals to any who like to sleep on the cooler side. Not cold, simply cool. Cotton breaths, other fabrics do not. The fabric is light, but **not thin. Again, cotton percale is a lofty drape but with a cotton that breathes nicely. II purchased the extra deep pocket, queen size with an accurate fit. The days of misfitted bottom sheets are gone. These, slide on with ease. They are not oversized or sloppy. The elastic hugs the mattress with comfort. I did not need to struggle or attempt to stretch the fabric to encase my mattress. It was a proper fitting, fitted sheet. The elastic is plenty. The drape of the percale is perfection. The drop on both sides of the bed is again proper. Not overly generous and hanging to low, nor too short that they create a tug-o-war when sleeping to keep covered. They fall to the edge of the mattesss which is what I was wanting. These sheets also launder very nicely in cold water. The colors do not bleed. I dryer my sheets on perm-press despite percale is not that finish. It helps reducing wrinkling. When I hear my dryer chime, I instantly remove the sheets and lightly press them with an iron so the fabric performs as percale should. For those who like a wrinkled sheet that is soft, you will also be pleased. These are wonderful sheets that fulfill their product description, 100%. My only request is for more prints and colors like the rest of the other size mattresses. Queen, extra deep pocket is limited with selection which is unfortunate as more mattresses are made thicker, denser and with a struggle to purchase properly fitting sheets. These sheets are sized correctly to fit 22" and perhaps 23" mattresses. The days of small fitted sheets are past tense. Oh, also the pillowcases are generous. I sleep with regular sized pillows but this company cut the pillowcases to allow for queen or larger pillows so there is again, plenty of room. I am delighted to know this company and hope more prints will become available for extra deep pocket sleepers.

Great crisp, cooling, cotton sheets. Not soft like microfiber but theyre amazing for hot sleepers.
Color: Lama Multi, Size: Full
These are awesome. They are the crisp, rougher kind of cotton sheets but cooling. i actually wanted sheets that felt more rough and crisp. These are not uncomfortable at all but rather the opposite. i am a very hot sleeper and i was using microfiber before; these were a game changer, the difference is astounding. never going back to microfiber again. when i shift to turn the other way while i sleep, the sheets feel cool to the touch its actually amazing. also the llamas are very cute. Cotton wrinkles more than other fabrics in case you mind that. but its not noticeable on my pillows and my comforter covers the sheets anyway.

Great summer sheets
Color: Light Blue, Size: Queen, Color: Light Blue, Size: Queen
Love these sheets! I washed them before using. Went by the manufacturer's instructions and they came out beautifully. I purchased these for my summer sheets, and they are very soft and comfortable and really keeps me cool at night. I purchased the light blue, but they are more like aqua green. Not saying I don't like them, the color is very pretty. But if you are looking for light blue, they are not quite that. Are there wrinkles? Yes, of course. They're 100% cotton. Did it interfere with my sleep? Nope. Not at all.

100% cotton
Color: Dark Gray, Size: King
I have a king size hybrid Purple mattress, and while the fitted sheet pockets don’t exactly fit all the way to the bottom, they didn’t really have issues with riding up much. I just pull them back down when making the bed, and it’s not really an issue. They are a little crunchy at first, but I think they soften with washes. I appreciate that they are 100 percent cotton which was my reason for purchasing. For the price, I am satisfied, and will probably purchase more if I can’t find anything comparable with deeper pockets. I would consider them to be a good mid weight, breathable sheet set, making them nice year round sheets. I haven’t had any pilling issues yet, I will continue to use to be sure this doesn’t become a problem before I purchase another set. The gray color is very pretty and neutral, making it match with many other color schemes. As of now, if the pockets were just a little deeper, I’d give 5 stars.
