About this item

  • Where to Plant

Cannas are statuesque plants with enormous leaves and flowers that follow suit. Site these horticultural Titans where they'll have room to grow, such as along property lines, foundations, or at the edges of ponds. They're also excellent in borders, raised beds, and large patio pots. Give them a spot where the soil drains well, and they'll receive full to partial sun.

  • When to Plant

Plant your Canna Lily rhizomes outdoors from late spring to early summer after the danger of frost has passed. They can also be started indoors in pots as early as a month before the average last frost date for those with shorter growing seasons.

  • How to Plant

Choose a location where the soil drains well, and your Cannas will receive full sun for the best performance. If water puddles remain 5ââ‚? hours after a hard rain in your outdoor planting spot, scout out another site or amend the soil with organic material to improve the drainage.
Fill containers, if using, with good quality, well-drained soil. Almost any commercially available potting medium will work fine.
Dig holes and plant your rhizomes 4ââ‚?" deep and 2' apart for tall varieties or 1' apart for the medium to dwarf types. Place the rhizomes with the eyes, or growing points, facing up.
Water after planting to gently soak the soil and settle it around the rhizomes.

  • How to Grow

Water your Cannas enough to keep the soil slightly damp but never soggy.
Leave the foliage in place at the end of the blooming season rather than trim it off. The leaves will gather sunlight to create food through photosynthesis, strengthening the bulbs for the future. You can remove the foliage when the leaves turn yellow and die back.
Dig up Canna rhizomes after the first frost if you live in a region colder than zone 8 and want to save them for next year. Let the rhizomes air dry for several days before placing them in a cool location surrounded by peat moss. While this method isn't always successful, it's worth a try for adventurous gardeners!
Feel free to cut Canna Lily flowers for bouquets when in bloom. If you prefer the foliage over the flowers, go ahead and snip all the flowers off—this is a fine way to prune the plants.
Give your Cannas time to rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle in spring.

  • Canna Tips & Tricks

Expect hummingbirds and other busy pollinators to visit your Canna Lilies in droves while in bloom! Bear in mind that the more sunlight they get, the better the foliage, colors, and bloom production will be! Amend soil with organic material to raise the level 2ââ‚?" and improve drainage. Compost, ground bark, or composted manure all work a charm and are widely available. Cannas thrive in soils too moist for many plants but will not survive in soggy settings.Ensure there are adequate drainage holes in your containers as Canna rhizomes must never sit in waterlogged soil.Wait until temperatures are warm before planting, or start your Cannas indoors in a pot. Roots and sprouts will form in a few weeks, depending on soil and air temperatures.Keep in mind the mature size of the varieties you have chosen, and plan your container sizes accordingly.Feel free to mix Cannas with other plants in the same container. Just keep in mind that all must have the same light and water needs.

    Flower Bulb Facts of Life

    Bulbs: Beauty In a Bottle:

Bulbs are a natural product. And, as such, follow a natural cycle of growth and rebirth. Enjoying their fabulous flowers means planting ahead in one season then results the next. Bulbs are among the easiest flowers to grow, not only are they affordable, but bulbs offer the most stunning colors available. Even the most novice gardener can create a breathtakingly beautiful spring garden with bulbs.

    What's a Bulb?

A flower bulb is really a self-contained flower factory. Within this marvelous little package is nearly everything the flower needs to come to life! Split a bulb open, for instance, and you'll see its baby flower bud, leaves, roots, stem and food supply. All bulbs need from you is to be placed in the ground at the appropriate season of year, given a liberal drink of water then left to work their magic.

    Variety:

Flower bulbs come in seemingly limitless varieties which makes them perfectly suitable for any garden design you can dream up.

    Is It a bulb ?

The Difference Between Bulbs, Corms, Tubers, Roots,Today, people commonly us the term 'bulb' to refer to any plant that stores its own food underground. But, in truth, many popular 'bulbs' are not true bulbs at all. These include corms, tubers and roots and, while they all produce beautiful flowers, technically the plants are different

    When To Plant

In fall, after soil temperatures are below 50ºF/10ºC. These bulbs bloom the following spring and require the cold winter temperatures for development. But let's say winter arrives and your bulbs are still in their bag. Not to worry! Bulbs are pre-programmed to grow so even if you have to plant through snow, plant your bulbs!

    How To Plant

Most bulbs thrive in either full or partial sun and in almost any location with good drainage. Avoid planting at the base of hills or under drainage pipes where water collects and will rot the bulbs.

    • Dig a hole
    • Drop in the bulb
    • Water thoroughly

    Tips For success

    • A larger grouping of flower bulbs are far more fab than just a few planted here and there. Think clumps of color.
    • Buy the largest bulbs you can find.
    • Note the flowering times. Not all bulbs will bloom at the same time. A little planning will greatly increase the number of months you will enjoy bulb flowers.

    Passionate About bulbs

Generally speaking, the best predictor for gardening success is bulb size. Almost always, the larger the initial bulb size planted, the larger and stronger the plants will be, producing more flowers. The first year end result will be noticeable to anyone. The best predictor for gardening success is bulb size.

Fine for a man (with skinny wrists)
    Color: Black/Gray, Color: Black/Gray
I have an older mens ironman which has gotten a little beat up and needs replacing. The band is much longer than I need. The metal clasp sits off-center on the underside of my wrist, closer to the part of my wrist which curves around to the front. The too-long strap sometimes flops around and catches on things. I couldn't find a smaller-band mens version, so I tried this "womens" watch (picking the most manly-looking one, of course). I like it better. The band fits my wrist much better, with the metal band in the middle and no flop. I also like that the watch is lighter and the face and band are smaller and less bulky, so it is less noticeable when I'm wearing it (cycling weight weenies will appreciate this). The face is still large enough to be easily legible and contains all of the same great features as my mens ironman watch, plus the newer versions now have an hourly chime, nice! Other info: my wrist is ~17.5cm or ~7.0" around. On this watch, I use the 6th out of 9 slots on the band. On my mens ironman, I use the 3rd out of 9 slots. Weight: this one = 28g, mens = 39g. Pics show comparison of my prior mens ironman with this new "womens" ironman. Photo order is confusing (couldn't figure out how to change that). They are: (1) side-by-side, mens on left, (2) mens band (wider and clasp is off-center on my wrist, end of band hangs over the edge of my wrist -- too long for me -- catches on things), (3) womens band (less wide, clasp is more centered on my wrist and end does hang over edge of my wrist), (3) womens watch (smaller, and looks new), and (5) mens watch, looking a little beat up.

    Watch holds up in saltwater!
    Color: Black/Gray
I bought this watch to use for my trip to the Galapagos Islands. I read two reviews that the watch does not hold up in salt water. I went snorkeling in the ocean 6 times, about 45 minutes each time. The watch did not leak. I did take precautions by keeping the watch under my rash guard and lowering myself slowly into the water. I also rinsed off my watch each time I snorkeled. I also bought this watch for the multi time zone feature by saving the time on the west coast, east coast and Galapagos time since I cannot change the time on my Fitbit until I land in an airport. I did not use any other features of the watch because I generally use my phone or Fitbit for an alarm or timer. The only complaint I have is that Timex now discourages changing the battery by the consumer. I changed the battery myself on my old Ironman watch. The new Ironman watch is fitted with triangular head screws. So I will have to purchase screwdrivers with triangular heads when it comes time to change the battery.

Reliable and durable, even in harsh conditions
    Color: Black/Gray
This watch has served me very well. From Arctic waters to long distance races, it has held up to everything except one task I asked of it, which was my fault. This watch can handle repeated free dives to 12 ft deep. It cannot handle scuba diving at the same depth for an hour straight without needing to have the battery shorted to reset it. It fits well, lights up consistently and brightly enough to read without being blinding, keeps accurate time, and generally does everything I want it to.

    Typical Timex
    Color: Black/Black/Brown
Just love this watch. It’s a little larger dial than the “typical” 38mm,which is what I was looking for. Works perfectly. Keeps decently accurate time, solid built metal case and glass crystal. Leather strap not too stiff so break in is not really a concern. I like Timex best for reliability, features and price. Plus it’s easy to change readily available batteries (which last about 1-2 years). Getting lots of compliments on it. One small oddity, what should be the second hand is actually a tachometer/chronograph function. The second hand is actually a smaller dial near the 6 o’clock position. Seems odd especially if you’ve never owned a hand sweep chronograph watch. Not a big deal just need to retrain your brain for the second hand. Timex has been my go to watch for years now and I’ve never had an issue with them except the occasional band or battery replacement. I wear them to work and am NOT easy on them at all. They just work. In my opinion, they are a great value. Moderate watches typically cost well over $100, Timex’s core watches are about 1/2 that price usually. Although the company has ventured into the upscale watch arena a few years ago and are also value packed and very good looking, some costing as much as $1000! For my daily driver kind of budget, I’ll stick with their core line basic watches thanks
