(Abies magnifica)

Abies magnifica, commonly known as the Red fir or California red fir, is a large evergreen tree native to the mountains of the western United States, particularly in California and Oregon.

Description

  • Size: Red firs can grow to impressive heights, often reaching 130 to 200 feet (40 to 60 meters) with trunk diameters of up to 6 feet (1.8 meters).
  • Bark: The bark is reddish-brown, thick, and deeply furrowed, which gives the tree its common name.
  • Leaves: The needles are flat, curved, and about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) long. They are dark green with two silvery bands of stomata on the underside.
  • Cones: The cones are cylindrical, 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) long, and purplish when young. They mature to a brown color and disintegrate to release seeds while still on the tree.

Habitat

  • Elevation: Red Fir is typically found at elevations between 4,000 and 10,000 feet (1,200 to 3,000 meters).
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, acidic soils.
  • Climate: Thrives in regions with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. It is well-adapted to high-altitude environments.

Growth and Care

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to slow-growing.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, but is relatively drought-tolerant once established.

Uses

  • Timber: The wood of Abies magnifica is valued for its light weight and strength, making it useful for construction, paper production, and other applications.
  • Ornamental: Its striking appearance makes it a popular choice for large landscapes, parks, and natural settings.
  • Ecological: Provides habitat and food for various wildlife, including birds and mammals.

The Red Fir is a majestic tree that plays a significant role in its native ecosystems and offers various practical uses.

Zones: 6 to 8

Stratification Requirement: Seed requires 30-60 days cold moist stratification.

Planting Instructions:

Stratification: Place the seeds in a zip lock bag with moist seed starting mix. Store the seeds in your fridge for 30-60 days to mimic winter conditions and break dormancy.

Sowing: Once stratified, plant the seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Ensure they are covered lightly with soil.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Light: Place the pots in a location with bright, indirect light.

Germination: Be patient, as germination can 1 to 3 weeks. Monitor for sprouts and continue to care for them with proper light and water.

Transplanting: When the seedlings are strong enough, gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them into their permanent location

Better and less $ than store Uncoated paper plates!
Size: 500 Count (Pack of 1), Size: 500 Count (Pack of 1)
I ordered the 9" Stock Your Home uncoated paper plates 500ct. They happened to be less expensive than the least expensive uncoated paper plates available in my local stores (per piece). While I was looking to buy bulk for numerous camping trips through the fall, I saw this brand come up. Since they are also made in the USA, I clicked the Add to Cart button SO fast! We do not use coated paper plates due to the chemicals which are called "wax" on most paper goods sold now. We were not disappointed. Right away, one of my children grabbed about 50 to take on a camping trip the next day and another kid took about 24 to their apartment to test them out... I used one for a sandwich and a scoop of potato salad; it was much sturdier that the other uncoated plates we used. The stamping process of the paper creates not only the fluted edges which add stability, but the scored center area. I am very impressed! I will see what that first kid experienced camping with them soon (6-day trip, no water to wash stainless plates for 3 of the days). They my partner and I will head off for our own camping vacation with plenty of these plates! They are great around the house, as well, especially when the youngest offspring brings all the friends over and my dishwasher is running. Or, especially when I just don't give a F. Haha, it is true.

just buy them
Size: 300 Count (Pack of 1)
Look.. They are paper plates. Are they thin? yes; use two of them, they are cheap enough. If you want "sturdy" to hold your spaghetti or thanksgiving dinner, then use a regular plate and get out of the review section. We use for pizza, sandwiches, hotdogs normal paper plates foods to avoid washing dishes 17times day. If my kids use 25 in one day. so what; each plate cost less than a penny. Bought 300ct in Feb 2025. It's April 2025 and I'm getting ready to place a 2nd order.

Low Quality, High Quantity, But Definitely Overpriced
Size: 500 Count (Pack of 1), Size: 500 Count (Pack of 1)
When did low quality paper plates start costing so much? Yes, you get 500, but these are very thin and I tend to use 2 or 3 at a time, especially when they stick and I don’t want to deal with ripping them apart. These are just ok. Nothing quality about these plates but they do what I need when I use those paper plate holders to keep them supported.
