Common hops (Humulus lupulus)

Humulus lupulus is a fast-climbing perennial, bearing masses of large, yellow-green leaves through spring to autumn, ideal for covering an arch or pergola. The female flowers can be used in dried flower displays – if left, they develop into hops. Mine's a pint. 

The large leaves of Humulus lupulus are the food plants for several species of butterflies and moths, and add denseness to a mixed native hedge. 

Common hops are widely distributed across the UK and grow in full sun, on a wide range of moist, well drained soils - they even do well on our heavy wet clay soil. Prune hard in the spring to encourage fresh new growth.
