Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' in Kokodama

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' in Kokodama combines a compact spider plant cultivar with a rounded coconut-fibre root ball. The plant forms a dense rosette of green leaves edged in cream, with the roots held inside the wrapped fibre base.

'Ocean' keeps a neat leafy centre and can later produce arching flower stems with young plantlets. In Kokodama, watering changes: the wrapped ball dries from the outside inward, holds water differently from a pot, and needs full drainage after soaking. The striped rosette sits clearly above the natural fibre ball, whether hung or placed on a stand.

Ocean spider plant in Kokodama

  • Compact spider plant cultivar grown in a wrapped Kokodama root ball
  • Short, broader leaves with green centres and cream margins
  • Rounded rosette habit for hanging, standing or shelf placement
  • Can produce small white flowers and plantlets as it matures
  • ASPCA-listed non-toxic species for cats and dogs

Growth in a wrapped root ball

Chlorophytum comosum is a perennial from parts of tropical and southern Africa, where it grows with strap-shaped leaves, fleshy storage roots, and seasonal moisture tolerance. 'Ocean' is a cultivated compact form with broader, cream-edged foliage and a tight rosette habit.

The potted Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' follows the same core care. With a Kokodama, ball weight, drying speed and leaf response are the most reliable watering checks.

Watering and hanging position

  • Light: Suspend in bright indirect light or gentle filtered light. Direct midday sun can dry the Kokodama surface quickly and scorch leaf edges.
  • Watering method: Soak the Kokodama ball in room-temperature water until evenly moist, then let it drain completely before returning it to its usual position.
  • Moisture check: Lift the ball before watering. A dry Kokodama feels noticeably lighter, while a moist centre still carries weight even when the outer layer looks dry.
  • Drying check: Allow the outside of the ball to dry and the centre to become only lightly moist before the next soak. Timing changes with room temperature, airflow and season.
  • Drainage: After soaking, let all excess water run off. Collected water around the ball can keep the root zone stagnant.
  • Temperature: Keep the ball and foliage above 15°C, especially after watering. A wet Kokodama ball cools faster than a standard pot.
  • Feeding: Add a very diluted liquid fertiliser to the soaking water during active growth, then use plain water for the next few waterings.
  • Handling: Support the ball when moving the plant. Pulling by the foliage can loosen the rosette or damage young roots.
  • Grooming: Trim spent flower stems and dry tips with clean scissors. Remove old plantlets only when they have started to form roots.
  • Long-term growth: Once roots strongly outgrow the Kokodama ball, the plant can be refreshed, rewrapped, or moved into a pot.

Moisture, roots and handling checks

  • Brown tips: Check for long dry intervals, mineral build-up from tap water, or fertiliser salts in the wrapped ball.
  • Soft crown or sour smell: The centre of the Kokodama may be staying wet. Extend the drying interval and improve airflow around the root ball.
  • Leaves folding inward: The ball may be dry through the centre. Soak until bubbles slow down, then drain fully.
  • Loose plant in the ball: Root movement can happen after rough handling or repeated shallow watering. Stabilise the plant and water by full soaking.

Living with the wrapped root ball

A Kokodama dries differently from a pot. The outer layer responds quickly to air movement, while the inner root zone changes more slowly. Lifting the ball is one of the clearest checks: a dry ball feels much lighter than a freshly watered one.

Pet-safe status and hanging security

For cats and dogs, ASPCA places Chlorophytum comosum on its non-toxic plant list. Hanging plants can attract playful pets, so secure the Kokodama well and keep loose plantlets beyond chewing range.

Name background and cultivar note

The accepted species name is Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques, in the family Asparagaceae. Chlorophytum comes from Greek roots for green or yellow-green plant, while comosum means furnished with a tuft, referring to the rosette of leaves. 'Ocean' is the horticultural cultivar name for this compact cream-edged spider plant selection.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' in Kokodama holds striped leaves and a compact spider plant rosette in a textured fibre base.

Stay put!

Nice and thin, soft, and stay put. I wear an 8 shoe and don’t like a thick sock taking up room. These socks are a bit tight on big toe. Wish they came in large.

The best
Number of Items: 3, Color: White/Neutral (3-pairs), Size: Medium
The best no show socks I have found. Stay in place very well and hold up wash after wash. I have tossed all the other brands I’ve bought over the years and stocked up on these as I was tired of digging through the drawer hoping to find a clean pair.

Love these.
Number of Items: 3, Color: White (3-pairs), Size: Medium
I have them in black and white. I use them everyday in all shoes. These are very versatile and a great quality material. They take a looong time to wear and they stay in place. Very washable and good material. They are not too thick and they do not shrink. I do air dry mine. They do not hold smells even in the summer heat.
