The Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana is a rare and elegant appearance among tropical houseplants. This particular variety came to the attention of botanists and plant enthusiasts not long ago, but has since quickly gained cult status. With its artfully shaped leaves, striking veins and refined incisions, this is a plant that leaves a lasting impression-a perfect choice for those looking for something unique in their collection.

Origin

The name "sierrana" probably refers to the Sierra Mazateca in Mexico, the area where this variant was first noted. Although the exact year of discovery is unclear, this Monstera only in recent decades truly recognized as a distinct variety within the Monstera deliciosa-group. In the wild, it grows as a climbing plant along trees, enjoying a warm, moist microclimate under the dense canopy of the rainforest.

Characteristics

What makes this variety so special is the combination of recognizability and sophistication. The leaves resemble those of the common Monstera deliciosa, but are often more graceful in shape. The indentations are deeper and more elegant, and the leaf veins stand out clearly. This gives the sierrana an almost artistic look-as if nature has worked here with extra finesse. Its compact growth habit also makes it excellent for indoor spaces without sacrificing visual impact.

Care

The Monstera sierrana requires a warm, bright spot with indirect sunlight. Direct sun can damage the delicate leaves. Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but avoid wet feet by choosing an airy and well-drained substrate. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Regular watering or a humidifier helps maintain healthy humidity, which is essential for a tropical species like this one. A moss stick or climbing support allows it to follow its natural growth habit. During the growing season, a monthly feeding can provide additional support for the plant.

Not as soft as it looks
It’s like a hard ball with fur covering. My dogs want to play with it, but have a hard time picking it up. Sounds cool, tho! I wish it was more like a stuffed ball they could easily pick up and throw around

Would buy again

Puppy loves this ball. She managed to tear the fuzzy part open fairly quickly but once it was all the way torn the ball inside that makes the noise is as pictured and she can still play with it regardless of the fuzzy part being taken off. Easy to keep track of as it's a tad bigger than a softball. Puppy loves it and it keeps her entertained.

Great turned to not so great
My Doberman (80 pounds in 7 months) puppy absolutely loved this ball. He loves anything noise making so this ball was perfect. Unfortunately, about 2 hours of nonstop play the cover was falling apart. There was no saving in. My pup is rough on toys and this one couldn’t handle it. I let him play without the cover for a little bit but the plastic is VERY hard. I’m not sure what type of plastic it is, but it’s very hard, no your average plastic. It was clunking around and banging into everything possible. I would love to give it more stars as it might have been perfect for other dogs, or maybe I just got a dud. But having to take the ball away from him was almost heart breaking. Those sad puppy dog ever and him looking everywhere for it. Barking nonstop because, well he want his ball….and being a puppy he is still learning. Had the cover held up for even 24 hours it would have been great. So I have a sad puppy and a lighter pocketbook. It was fun while it lasted.
