Ficus Elastica Tineke is one of the most striking variegated rubber plants you can grow. Good for beginners? Yes, with attention to light. Tineke is easy to care for but its variegation means it needs more light than solid-colored rubber plants. Place it in a bright spot and it is very low maintenance.
Safe for cats and dogs? Ficus Elastica is toxic to pets if ingested. The sap can also irritate skin — wear gloves when pruning. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Light needs: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the cream and white variegation. It will not thrive in low-light spaces — the variegated leaves have less chlorophyll and need more light to compensate. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the pale areas.
Care at a glance: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid moving it frequently as Ficus dislikes being repositioned. Feed monthly in spring and summer. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to keep them glossy and allow maximum light absorption.
