Sawtoothed Japanese Aucuba (Aucuba japonica 'Serratifolia')

Sawtoothed Japanese Aucuba is a shade-loving evergreen shrub that brings a clean, deep green look to the parts of the landscape where many plants struggle. The glossy foliage stays attractive year-round, giving foundation beds and sheltered borders a more finished, intentional feel. It is a strong option for low-light areas where you want dependable structure without a fussy routine. With consistent moisture while it establishes and decent drainage, it settles into an easy, long-term backbone shrub for shade.

Distinctive Features

This cultivar is valued for long, dark green, leathery leaves with sharply serrated edges that add texture and definition in shaded plantings. The overall habit is dense and rounded, creating a substantial evergreen presence that holds its shape well with minimal pruning. Flowers are small and not showy, but plants can produce bright red berries in fall and winter when a compatible male aucuba is nearby for pollination. The foliage is the main show, offering a polished look that stays steady through every season.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Part shade to shade, with protection from hot afternoon sun for best leaf quality.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter, and avoid sites that stay waterlogged.
  • Water: Moderate, keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods.
  • USDA Zones: 6 to 10.
  • Exposure: Best in sheltered locations out of harsh winter wind and intense reflected heat.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use one plant as a foliage focal point in shade where the bold serrated leaves can stand out year-round.
  • Foundation Planting: Add dependable evergreen structure along shaded foundations where other shrubs can look thin or stressed.
  • Shade Borders: Plant under open trees and along woodland edges to create a steady green backbone behind perennials.
  • Screening: Use in sheltered shade as a dense screen where privacy is needed without relying on sun-loving hedges.
  • Evergreen Massing: Group several plants to create a fuller, continuous evergreen block that reads cleanly in low light.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Prune in early spring as needed to shape and remove any winter-damaged stems.
  • Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture and buffer temperature swings, keeping mulch a few inches off the stems.
  • Watering: Water deeply during drought, especially in the first couple of seasons and in drier shade.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring if growth is weak, using a balanced slow-release fertilizer according to label directions.
  • Berry Set: Plant a male aucuba nearby if you want consistent red berry production in fall and winter.

Why Choose Sawtoothed Japanese Aucuba?

  • Shade Reliability: Performs well in part shade to shade, including tough north-facing sites.
  • Evergreen Structure: Dense, glossy foliage keeps borders and foundations looking finished all year.
  • Textured Leaves: Sharply serrated foliage adds a more detailed look than many broadleaf evergreens.
  • Possible Winter Berries: Can produce bright red fruit with a male pollinator nearby for extra seasonal interest.
  • Simple Routine: Thrives with a protected site, steady moisture, and basic seasonal cleanup.

If you need an evergreen that performs in shade and still looks clean and intentional, Sawtoothed Japanese Aucuba is a dependable choice. Give it a protected site, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture while it establishes, and it will hold a dense, glossy look with minimal effort. Use it as a single anchor in a dark corner or repeat it to create a calmer, more continuous planting. Over time, it becomes a steady backbone shrub that keeps shaded areas looking polished year-round.

Happy pup. Worth it.
My dog loves this thing. It takes hardly any effort to launch the ball. Flick of the wrist kinda thing. The squeaky ball is her favorite but unfortunately you can't buy this brand of ball separately. It says compatible with any 2.5 inch ball but that's not true. We have a ton of Penn tennis balls and they are just slightly too big for this launcher. You can do it but it's a huge pain and hard to throw. Another issue is that when we first got it the handle didn't want to stay screwed together. After the first day of use and having to rescrew it together multiple times, the issue seems to have corrected itself? Either way, for the price with the comfy handle, very low effort throwing for big pay off, two balls included and the crazy excitement from my dog anytime we get near the thing. It's definitely worth it. I like it much better than the chuck it and stone random cheap brand we used to have. I'm going to try one of the balls recommended in the product pictures. I'll update if they work out.

Ergonomic and well made.
I have at least a half dozen ball launchers and this is the nicest one. As efficient as any of them and it feels the nicest in my hand. As long as you tighten the handle when you put it together, it will serve your puppy well.

Ball Launcher Poorly Made and Hard To Use, Save Your Money
This launcher was too long and thin to pick up the ball from the ground, I had to use my other hand to press down on it. The screw on handle was heavy and kept coming loose no matter how tight I made it, strain on the wrist to use. The ball holder end would often not let go of the ball when trying to launch it. I ended up putting it in the trash. I had two shorter Chuckit launchers that are much better made, will stick with them. I don't recommend this to anyone, save your money.

Go Get It!
GoSports does it again. Our family has a lot of GoSports products. It brings us comfort knowing when we order a product from them the quality is going to be great. The Ball Launcher is excellent. Our lab loves the soft tennis balls that come with it, preferring them over the harder rubber ones from other brands. The launcher itself is thoughtfully designed, well-made, and comfortable to hold. Our new go-to for daily fetch sessions.

Gave it a Try
I have always used the Chuck It ball and ball launcher. I thought I would try this since the price was better. There is definitely a reason it is priced lower. The handle on this one twists on and constantly comes undone when you throw, and it does not launch nearly as well. I would not order this product again.
