Viola adunca

Early-blue violet, aka hooked-spur violet, is a diminutive groundcover capable of beautifying any corner of your garden. Each spring, its fragrant purple blooms won’t fail to delight - and can be a highly decorative addition to salads and baked goods. The foliage is composed of delicate heart-shaped leaves, often curled into cute little cups, and is a larval host plant to a number of endangered butterflies.

  • Plant type/canopy layer: deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant
  • Size at maturity: 6" tall, 0-8" wide, spreading nicely by seed
  • Light requirements: full sun to full shade
  • Moisture requirements: dry to moist soil
  • Bloom time: March - August (May - July in the Portland Metro area)
  • Growth rate/ease: fast growing, easy to grow
  • Wildlife support: flowers attract and provide nectar to adult butterflies, bees and other insect pollinators; overall plant attracts and supports beneficial and other pest eating insects and is a caterpillar host plant/larval food source for native butterflies and moths
  • Native habitat/range: common growing in meadows, forest edges and along damp streambanks, at all elevations in nearly every county of the Pacific Northwest. Portland Plant List - yes.
  • Special features & uses: groundcover; medicinally the leaves have long been used for cough and lung congestion, in poultices to relieve pain (note - only leave on for a few hours as they can cause skin irritation), and as a laxative; flowers are edible and can be used in salads, cakes decorations and medicinal teas; landscape uses include pollinator gardens, woodland gardens, meadowscapes; often a critical component of butterfly habitat restoration projects

Gardening with Early-blue Violet: This sweet, versatile little plant is exceptionally tolerant of whatever mother nature, or your garden, can throw at it - such as salt spray, seasonal drought, fluctuating moisture levels, and disturbance. But, as with many plants, it will perform best in mature soils with high organic matter. Its explosive seed pods will hurl seed an impressive distance for such a small stature. And, thanks to our friends the ants, new plants can even turn up in far-flung corners of your yard - or your neighbors - which is great news for the pollinators!

Our dogs hurt their mouths chewing these bones
Color: Purple & Blue
I don't do a lot of reviews because I realize many are objective opinions. However, in this case I felt it was necessary to warn others. Our dogs are aggressive chewers. Their last rubber bones (not these) which we've purchased before, and recently purchased again, were destroyed quickly. Chunks of rubber came off the ends. Since those didn't hold up like they used to, I found these harder bones hoping they would last longer. They were able to gnaw into the hard plastic within a few minutes. This created sharp edges that cut their mouths. When I saw a bit of blood on the bones, I took them away from the dogs and threw them away. I wondered why they quit chewing on them after being so excited at first. Also, these are hard enough to damage a tooth.

Pups have shown zero interest in these toys….
Color: Purple & Blue
I would agree that these are indestructible being neither of my dogs have shown any interest in these at all. At this rate they should last forever…

Durable but losses interest
Color: Purple & Blue
My dog is an aggressive chewer. She was interested in this toy while it was new, but soon after lost interest. Good news is although it took a beating it did not break or splinter. If soppy toys are disposable in your house, give it a try.

Chew toy that will last!
Color: Blue&Red Fish
Great toy for a real chewer. It's been in the house for about 5 days and the toy is still intact and the squeaker is still squeaking.
