Podocarpus chinensis, also known as the Chinese Podocarpus or Buddhist Pine, is a coniferous evergreen shrub or small tree from the Podocarpaceae family. Native to China, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia, it has long been associated with peace and longevity in Buddhist and traditional Asian culture.

As a bonsai subject, Podocarpus chinensis is admired for its refined, elegant foliage and natural suitability for shaping. The leaves are narrow, leathery, and lance-shaped, arranged in neat clusters that create a graceful, airy canopy. Over time, the trunk develops attractive bark with characterful textures, and with regular training, the bonsai takes on the appearance of a miniature ancient tree.

It is particularly well-suited for upright bonsai styles such as formal upright (Chokkan) or informal upright (Moyogi), as well as group plantings and literati styles. Its evergreen nature ensures year-round beauty, and its association with harmony makes it a meaningful bonsai to grow.

Podocarpus chinensis Bonsai – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, direct to filtered outdoor sunlight. It should be grown as an outdoor bonsai, but can be brought indoors temporarily for display. Avoid keeping it permanently indoors, as light levels will be too low.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist. Water thoroughly when the top layer of soil feels dry. While it tolerates short dry spells, it prefers consistent moisture. Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.

Temperature and Hardiness

  • Temperature: Hardy in mild UK climates, tolerating down to around –5°C. In colder regions, provide winter protection in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

  • Seasonality: Evergreen, retaining foliage year-round.

Soil and Potting

Use a free-draining bonsai soil mix with akadama, pumice, and lava rock. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, pruning roots lightly.

Feeding

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. Switch to a low-nitrogen feed in late summer to strengthen growth for winter.

Pruning and Training

  • Pruning: Trim back new shoots regularly to maintain shape and encourage ramification. Avoid heavy pruning in autumn or winter.

  • Wiring: Branches are flexible when young and respond well to wiring; check frequently to avoid wire marks.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate grower that develops dense, compact foliage pads with consistent pruning. With age, bark texture and trunk thickness add character, creating a true miniature tree aesthetic.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Can be caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Sparse foliage: Insufficient light or poor feeding.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by scale insects or aphids.

Background and Benefits

In Asian culture, the Podocarpus is regarded as a sacred tree, often planted near temples for its symbolic connection to peace, wisdom, and longevity. As a bonsai, Podocarpus chinensis combines this cultural heritage with elegant evergreen beauty, making it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.

Excellent Tool For Drilling Shelf Pin Holes
I had a project where I was extending the depth of the bottom half of a bookcase I had made out of pre-drilled MDF from Home Depot. The original bookcase was 11" deep x 10' high. The extended depth of the bottom is to be used to hold audio gear and needed to be 18" depth, front to rear. I was able to increase the depth but had to insert additional panels on the left and right so that shelf pins could be installed. I needed a shelf pin jig to do that, and this jig was perfect for the job. After completing my holes and mounting some shelves I was pleased that the alignment with the inner portion of the shelf was perfect and the distance between holes lined up exactly as with the original panels from Home Depot. The jig is high quality fabricated aluminum, not plastic, and it comes with two drill bits, and stop and Allen wrench, including an instruction manual, all in an attractive plastic case. The jig is well worth the modest price and I would definitely recommend it for drilling shelf clip holes.

a solid choice
I realized I don't need to drill 5mm holes, so this item is just perfect. It's higher quality than those other cheap-chinese noname jigs. In particular: * The stop collar provided actually fits the drill bit. I had one from Tanyo that had too-big collars that didn't stay put. * The fence pins are very soilid, so the jig doesn't move while in place. Other brands have a long knurled screw that wobbles and allows the kiig to move around. * The plate is thick, making it feel sturdy. * It's phyically smaller than the others, because it doesn't have any useless features like euro-hinge hole guides. The case is more compact and stores well. Overall, very satisfied with this jig.

very nice tool
likes, all aluminum construction, seems very accurate and uses more sturdy 1/4 inch shelf pins instead of the 5mm ones comes with 2 bits which is a huge plus the competition makes you buy the 1/4 drill and only is set up for 5mm to start. this jig will work along side, for now, my other jig dislike is the fact it only has 1/4 pin capability not a deal killer in any way, and it has "pins" to support the jig on the edge again this is both an advantage and disadvantage as you can change the depth of where the pins are located BUT if you are making something smaller the jig may not calibrate consistently. on another positive you can replace the bits easily and commonly as they are not proprietary and simply standard 1/4 inch bits this will be a fine addition to my other goingmake tools and future ones
