A truly eye-catching succulent, Crassula pyramidalis ‘Compacta’ is admired for its perfectly stacked, square leaves that form a sculptural, temple-like column. Each leaf grows tightly layered atop the next, creating a geometric form that looks almost architectural. Slow-growing and naturally compact, this plant makes a striking feature for sunny shelves and minimalist interiors.

Scientific Name
Crassula pyramidalis ‘Compacta’ (pyramid-shaped thick-leaved plant)

Part of the Crassula genus within the Crassulaceae family. The cultivar ‘Compacta’ has been selected for its tighter, more symmetrical growth compared to the standard species.

Synonyms
Sometimes sold as Crassula ‘Buddha’s Temple’

Common Name
Buddha’s Temple

Origin
Derived from Crassula species native to South Africa, where they grow in arid, rocky habitats.

Light
Prefers bright light, including some direct sun. Insufficient light can cause the stacked form to loosen or stretch.

Water
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly and reduce significantly in winter. Overwatering can quickly cause rot due to the tightly packed leaves.

Humidity
Thrives in low humidity. Avoid misting or placing in damp rooms.

Soil
Use a very free-draining compost, ideally a cactus or succulent mix with added grit. Repot infrequently, as it prefers to be slightly pot-bound.

Food
Feed every 4–5 waters during the growing season with a cactus or succulent fertiliser. Do not feed in winter.

Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 15–26°C. Protect from frost and avoid temperatures below 5–7°C.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Water directly into the soil and avoid wetting the leaves – moisture trapped between them can lead to rot.

Extras
Growth is very slow, but offsets may form at the base in ideal conditions.

Did You Know?
The precise, stacked leaf arrangement is an example of mathematical phyllotaxis, where leaves grow in repeating geometric patterns.

The Squeaker gave out the first week
I got this for my playful chihuahua. The size is rather large for him, but that's really not an issue for him; he already thinks he's ferocious and big as a Rottweiler. The Squeaker worked at first, but it's not attached to anything on the inside, so it floats freely and is hard to locate and squeeze, without it slipping out of my grasp. After a week, the squeaker is now completely collapsed and doesn't work at all. Its a terrible design. The Squeaker should be easily accessible, firmly attached to something on the inside, and should be more durable.

Great toy
Color: Black/Orange
This brand really makes durable toys. They outlast every other toy my dogs have. One dog loves to get the squeaker out of any toy, but he doesn’t rip this one apart. Obviously it won’t last forever, but no toy does! Some other brands of toys only make it a day or two, while these last months to years.

Great toy for two big German Shepherds
Color: Brown
We only buy Tuffy dog toys now because we have one German Shepherd, and we often watch our daughter's GSD too, and the two dogs tear anything else apart in minutes. Tuffy toys are BY FAR superior to any other dog toy we have tried. That being said, some Tuffy toys seem to last longer than others with the two dogs, and this one has been pretty good! We've had it for a few weeks now, and it's just now starting to show some white (stuffing) where their teeth have pierced the top of the toy. That's pretty good, considering they play tug of war with it and can tear into toys pretty hard. If it were just our one dog, I think it would last a lot longer because it's the tug of war between the two of them that does them in faster. Even so, when they do manage to tear the fabric in vulnerable places, I just pull the stuffing out from that area, and they continue to play with it, sometimes for months! This one is better than some other Tuffy toys too because it has lots of areas where there is already more fabric and reinforced seams than stuffing, like all the legs on the side, the tail, and even the pincers. So far, they haven't been able to tear into those at all. Just a bit on the top of the head, and so far, no stuffing coming out yet. This one is a big win for us! When they finally do do it in, I will turn around and buy another Scorch the Scorpion right away!
