Quick answer: what is Molly's Aroid Mix?

  • For: Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Anthurium, Alocasia, Syngonium, and every other aroid in the houseplant family.
  • What's in it: chunky fir bark, coco coir, perlite, horticultural charcoal, worm castings. No peat moss, no soil.
  • Why it works: aroids evolved as epiphytes on rainforest trees. Their roots want air pockets, not packed dirt. Regular potting soil suffocates them.
  • How long it lasts: 12-18 months in the pot before it needs refreshing. Roughly double the lifespan of standard soil-based mixes.
  • Ready to use straight from the bag. No mixing, no DIY, no rinsing.

More plant-specific guidance: Best soil for Monstera, Do orchids need soil?, Potting soil vs potting mix.

Aroids fail in regular potting soil because the soil compacts, holds water, and starves roots of air. Standard "tropical houseplant soil" is too dense for plants like Monstera, Philodendron, and Anthurium that evolved as epiphytes on rainforest trees. They want chunky, fast-draining, air-pocketed substrate, exactly what soil isn't.

Molly's Aroid Mix is engineered for that gap. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, coir, and horticultural charcoal that drains within seconds, holds humidity instead of water, and resists compaction even after months of watering.

What's in the bag

  • Orchid bark (chunky): the structural backbone. Air pockets and slow decay mean roots can breathe and grip without rot.
  • Coarse horticultural perlite: the drainage workhorse. Stops water from pooling at the root zone.
  • Coir fiber and chips: retains the right amount of moisture without becoming soggy. Replaces peat, which compacts.
  • Expanded clay (LECA): wicks moisture upward so roots get humidity, not standing water.
  • Horticultural charcoal: filters salts and impurities, keeps the mix sweet through repeated watering.
  • Worm castings: a slow-release nutrient base. Plants get nitrogen on demand, not in a flush.
  • Beneficial microbes (Bacillus pumilus, Rhizophagus irregularis): mycorrhizae extend the root system; bacteria suppress soil-borne pathogens.
  • Calcitic + dolomitic limestone: buffers pH to the slightly acidic range aroids prefer (5.8 to 6.5).

20+ organic and mineral ingredients in total. No commercial synthetic fertilizers, low peat content (blended with coconut coir to reduce overall peat usage).

Plants this is for

Designed for aroids and tropical foliage plants: Monstera (especially variegated cultivars that need maximum aeration), Philodendron, Anthurium, Pothos, Alocasia, Aglaonema, Calathea, Syngonium, ZZ plant, Sansevieria, Fiddle Leaf Fig, Palm, Hoya. Anything that wants chunky, fast-draining, humidity-retaining substrate.

Not for: succulents and cacti (use Molly's Succulent Mix) or orchids (use Molly's Orchid Mix).

How to repot

  1. Choose a pot 1 to 2 inches wider than the current root ball, with drainage holes. Aroids do not want to be over-potted.
  2. Remove the plant from its current container. Gently shake off old soil from the root system. If the old substrate has compacted into a brick, soak briefly to loosen.
  3. Add a layer of fresh mix to the bottom of the new pot, about 1 inch thick.
  4. Position the plant at the same depth it was growing before, then fill around the roots with mix. Tap the pot gently to settle, but do not press down hard. The mix should stay airy.
  5. Water thoroughly once. Let it drain. Do not water again until the top inch feels dry to touch.

FAQ

Can I mix this with regular potting soil?

You can, but you defeat the purpose. The reason this mix works is its chunkiness and drainage. Adding standard soil compacts the air pockets and brings back the over-watering risk. If you're trying to make a bag stretch further, mix it 1:1 with extra perlite or bark, not soil.

How often do I water with this mix?

Less often than you'd water in regular soil. Most aroids in this mix want watering every 7 to 14 days indoors. Always check the top inch with your finger first. The mix dries from the top down, so the surface drying does not necessarily mean the root zone is dry.

Will this mix work for orchids?

No. Orchids want pure bark with charcoal and almost no organic matter. The aroid mix has too much coir and microbe activity for an orchid's epiphytic root system. Use Molly's Orchid Mix for orchids.

Is the mix already fertilized?

It contains worm castings and beneficial microbes that release nutrients slowly, but no synthetic fertilizer. After the first 2 to 3 months, supplement with a balanced liquid fertilizer (NPK around 3-1-2 for aroids, diluted to half-strength) every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season.

Handles Photo-Quality Prints, Versatile Connectivity
Color: Black, Style: ET-2800-B, Pattern Name: Printer, Color: Black, Style: ET-2800-B, Pattern Name: Printer
I've had this printer for a whole year now. I was on a severe budget, looking for a photo-quality printer that didn't require Wifi in this digital age- because I quite frankly can't afford my own Wifi connection. My rink-a-dink laptop had to be set up with the software at my library, and an extra cord purchased. All that said, I mostly print from my phone, because the software app is a bit easier to ensure that I get the highest quality setting. Laptop loves to be a snot about it. The blutooth feature, or "wifi direct", has a way about it, and as soon as you figure out what it wants, it gives minimal problems. It functions exactly as if a printer had wifi on it, believe it or not. What sold me on this model was the ability to do all of that, and adjust for different situations, seeing as other brands DEMAND constant wifi connectivity (lookin' at BROTHER, maybe Canon, too), and the long lasting ink tanks- I've printed hundreds of pages, and being a gothic/horror artist, at least a good part of the time, black is the only color even half gone. What horrified me the most about printer-shoping dropping a lot of money (hundred plus is a lot over here, man) and not getting the prints to look like my work. Well, fear not. The attached pictures are why I made this review, to hopefully ease the anxiety of others. I make digital paintings, and use high DPI for high quality, and also the cutest micro-stickers you've ever seen. Prints come out clear, even if they can sit in the tip of my finger. Yes, there are probably better printers. Maybe they're faster, and have even better connectivity, and have more bells and whistles. I specifically did not want to pay for those things, so, I'm very happy there's options. It's not perfect, no, because every now and then, I get what I call a "special edition", where my printer has decided to multi-color barf out the last third of the page. One time it randomly printed in black and white. Well, that's no big deal, my stuff tends to look great in monochrome. Every now and then I get a low quality print; things just look a bit fuzzy. I'm not happy about that, but, you clean the heads, and print something simple and toony, and it has never done it twice in a row. Alignment has been off only one time, and I put the printer away after every session. It occurs to me that people pay good amounts of money for printers that do that sort of thing anyway, so... Printers gonna printer, no matter where you try to hide. Overall, I'm happy and relieved. I hope it lasts me a good long time. (Streetratt on Kofi, by the way.🖤 )

Amazing value and performance — perfect everyday home printer!
Color: Black, Style: ET-2800-B, Pattern Name: Printer
After lots of research and comparing ink costs, I finally purchased the Epson EcoTank ET-2800 Wireless Color All-in-One Cartridge-Free Supertank with Scan and Copy and it has been one of the best tech investments I’ve made for my home setup. Whether I’m printing documents, photos, homework, or creative projects, this printer delivers consistently reliable results without the usual stress over ink costs. Right out of the box, setup was surprisingly easy. Epson’s app guided me through the wireless connection, and within minutes the printer was connected to my Wi-Fi and ready to go. The initial filling of the ink tanks took a few extra minutes, but the included bottles were clearly labeled and simple to use without mess. The print quality has exceeded my expectations for an all-in-one home printer: - Documents: Crisp, clean text — perfect for school assignments, work documents, letters, and recipes. - Photos: Bright, colorful prints with decent detail (especially when using good-quality paper). - Graphics & Crafts: I’ve printed worksheets, planner pages, labels, and even small art pieces — and everything looks sharp and vibrant. - The speed is solid for its class. It’s not a professional office machine, but it doesn’t feel slow for everyday use. Cartridge-Free Ink — Game Changer This is the real highlight: - Cartridge-free Supertank System: Instead of tiny cartridges that run out in no time, this printer uses large refillable ink tanks — which means massive savings on ink long-term. - Low Ink Cost: You really feel the savings after your first few refills. I used to go through cartridges quickly, but now I only refill every few months — and even then, it’s affordable. The included ink bottles provide a ton of pages, and you can easily track levels through the transparent tanks so you’re never caught off guard. The wireless setup works smoothly. I can print from: - My phone (via Epson app, AirPrint, or Google Cloud Print) - My laptop or tablet - Directly via Wi-Fi without cables No more plugging USB in every time — super convenient. The scanner is quick and easy to use: - Scan photos - Scan documents straight to email or phone - Make copies without touching a computer The scan quality is clear and accurate — ideal for digitizing receipts, forms, or school worksheets. Pros: - Huge savings on ink long-term - Excellent print quality for text and color graphics - Easy wireless setup and mobile printing - Transparent tanks — see ink levels at a glance - Scanner and copier work well for everyday tasks - Quiet operation compared to older printers Minor Notes - Initial setup takes a bit longer because of ink filling — but it’s worth it. - Photo prints are good for casual use, though super high-detail photography will still look better with dedicated photo printers or labs. - No automatic document feeder (ADF) — so multi-page scanning requires manual pages. The Epson EcoTank ET-2800 has transformed my printing experience. It’s affordable to run, produces great everyday prints, and the wireless features make it super convenient for the entire household. If you’re looking for a home printer that won’t drain your budget on ink, this one is absolutely worth it. Whether you’re printing school documents, work files, planners, photos, or craft projects, this printer does it all with ease — and saves you money over time. Highly recommended for home use — practical, efficient, and budget-friendly!

Excellent Investment!
Color: Black, Style: ET-2800-B, Pattern Name: Printer
I have had this printer for two years now. I purchased it to do invitations and signs for my Daughter's baby shower. I designed an invitation, printed more than sixty copies with address labels, return address labels, numerous signs, games and raffles tickets. I used it again for the Baby's 1st Birthday same amount of items. I have not had to fill the colored ink in over 2 years. I have filled the black. My husband also uses it for work and I've printed several other projects including pictures. Everything has always exceeded my expectations. For the price you get excellent quality. I find the software easy to use and update.

Easy set-up, high quality prints, beautiful design!
This sleek and modern print/copy station has every feature you could ever need. With an easy set-up and user friendly interface and endless ink supply, this device exponentially enhances work-flow reduces technological headaches for good! Let's be real. My old printer had been a great work-horse for many years. Unfortunately as I upgraded my computer setup and phone, it was no longer syncing appropriately and had become a manual, troubleshooting headache! I was having to print the "even" pages on auto handling, then flip them by hand to print the "odd" pages with normal handling, then re-order appropriately. Not only this, but the cartridge price for my old device had risen to $30 per cartridge and I was constantly needing to replace and go through the pain of a slow, manual alignment process. Something needed to change. And that is when the HP OfficeJet Pro stepped in. The setup was an absolute dream. The provided QR code takes you directly to a setup slide-show that walks you through each step one at a time (I've posted a few screen-shots of the interface). Everything worked smoothly and as intended. I especially appreciated the speedy, automatic alignment. Once set-up was complete, I was able to effortlessly connect through all of my devices and print! The quality of the print was crisp, high quality and each page was ready lickety-split. The only con I could possibly note is that it isn't the most quiet printer I've ever used. If you need something whisper quiet, you may need to look at something else or move the printer to a more appropriate location. Once set up, I created an account and signed up for the subscription-based ink refills, which I think is a really ingenious idea. I actually chatted in with an HP representative regarding this (they were easy to get a hold of) to further clarify how it works. In a nutshell, you decide how many pages you anticipate printing in a month and you pay for that amount if ink. There is a sensor chip in the ink cartridge that lets HP know when youre about to run out of ink and they'll send you more...regardless if where you're at in your subscription. So, if I didnt quite use my 100 pages worth of ink, it wont bill my next month or send ink until I'm ready. This works out to be one heck of a deal. All told, 100 pages will only cost 7.99 rather than my usual 30 (or 60 if you count both ink and color). On top of functionality, this is also a beautiful piece of office equipment. I adore the soft white tone of the unit, which looks both uplifting and peaceful in my work area. Its the little things, I swear. Not only does it look peaceful, but it has taken extra stress off of my plate by being so easy to work with. Plus I don't have to add ink to my shopping list anymore! I think you'll find this unit to be well worth your while, and if its anything like my old HP printers, it's hopefully going to last a good handful of years!

Incredible image quality even when enlarged to full capacity
The quality and reliability of HP OfficeJet printers is unmatched, from my experience. I use this printer for regular everyday things like return labels and printing out documents but my favorite thing to use it for are art and design projects. I am able to copy an image and enlarge it up to 400%, or minimize its size to 25% which is an incredible range and perfect for design and art projects. As long as the ink cartridges are all at full capacity my images always come out flawless, even when I enlarge them huge. As long as I send an image in the right format or copy from a hard copy image it is always clear and crisp, not pixalized. Our craft room/office is in the basement and I am easily able to print from my kitchen or bedroom from my phone or laptop which is very convenient. The array of functions, the quality of the image, and the bright beautiful rich colors this printer is able to produce is really great if you plan to use it for design or art. I have never had a paper jam, which is very impressive considering I am always changing to photo paper as well as multiple different sized paper. I just received this printer but the HP printer I was using before still works like a charm and is close to 20 years old, if you are using this for your home I can't imagine having to replace it. My absolute favorite part is a 4 pack of extra large ink is $47.99 which is almost half of what my other printers ink cost. The wide format and large paper size I am able to print on has made our art projects really beautiful and uniform, rather than having to try to hide the seams of multiple pages taped together. Incredible product.
