Description

A cacao tree, scientifically known as Theobroma cacao, is a tropical evergreen tree native to the deep rainforests of Central and South America. It belongs to the family Malvaceae and is primarily cultivated for its fruit, which is used to produce chocolate.

Nacional cacao tree variety

This is a Nacional (EET-59) variety cacao tree. Nacional cacao, also known as Arriba or Ecuadorian cacao, is a highly sought-after variety prized for its fine flavor and aroma. It is primarily grown in Ecuador, particularly in the regions of Esmeraldas, Los Ríos, and Manabí. Nacional beans are known for their floral and fruity notes, with a delicate yet complex flavor profile. However, Nacional trees are more vulnerable in commercial plantations, which has led to a decline in production in recent years.

Cacao tree fruit (pod)

The cacao fruit, also known as a cacao pod, is the edible fruit of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The pod is attached to the tree trunk or larger branches through a short stem known as the peduncle.

Size and Shape:

  • Cacao pods are relatively large and have a distinctive shape. They are elongated and typically measure around 15 to 25 centimeters (6 to 10 inches) in length. The size can vary depending on the variety and maturity of the pod.

Color and Texture:

  • The outer skin of a cacao pod has a thick, tough texture. When ripe, the color of the pod's exterior can range from yellow, orange to red. The surface of the pod can be smooth or slightly ribbed.

Pulp:

  • Inside the cacao pod, there is a sweet and tangy pulp that surrounds the cacao beans. The pulp is white and fleshy, and its flavor varies depending on the variety and ripeness of the fruit. It has a tropical fruity taste and is often consumed by animals and humans.

Cacao Beans:

  • The main reason for the popularity of cacao fruit is the beans (seeds) it contains. Embedded within the pulp of the pod, there are numerous cacao beans. These beans are arranged in rows or clusters and are usually covered with a whitish membrane. Cacao beans are oval-shaped, flattened, and about 1 to 3 centimeters (0.4 to 1.2 inches) in length.

Harvesting and Processing:

  • Cacao pods are harvested when they reach maturity. The process involves carefully cutting the pods from the tree using tools like machetes. Once harvested, the pods are opened, either by hand or using specialized tools, to extract the cacao beans and pulp. The beans undergo fermentation and drying processes to develop their characteristic flavor and aroma.

The cacao fruit is a vital part of the chocolate-making process. The beans extracted from the pods serve as the raw material for chocolate production, while the pulp can be consumed as a juicy snack or utilized in various culinary applications.

Properties and care

How to take care of a Cacao tree?

Taking care of a cacao tree involves providing it with the right growing conditions and proper maintenance. When taken care of properly, it is proven to produce cacao pods. Here are some essential tips for caring for a cacao tree grown in a pot:

Suitable Growing Conditions:

  • A chocolate plant needs a warm growing area that stays, for the most part, above 10-15°C, preferably with higher daytime temperatures and good quality light with some direct sunlight. This would be a large, south-facing window, a sunroom, greenhouse or conservatory. In most parts of Europe, Chocolate plants also benefit from being grown outside during the summer months in partial sunlight.

Watering:

  • Cacao trees require regular watering to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. They prefer consistent moisture but can tolerate short dry periods.

Fertilization:

  • Cacao trees benefit from regular fertilization to maintain their health and productivity. Apply fertilizer in the recommended quantities and frequency according to the instructions on the product label. Typically, fertilizers are applied every 2 to 3 months.

Pruning:

  • Pruning helps maintain the shape of the tree, promotes airflow, and encourages better fruiting. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches promptly. Prune the tree to your desired height and shape when in growing season.

Humidity:

  • If you notice leaves or yellow flowers turning brown and or dropping, this is an indication that the air’s moisture needs to be increased. If grown in a pot, use a humidity tray to increase humidity around the plant.

Pollination:

  • The tree should flower when 3-5 years old and about five feet (1.5 m.) tall. The cacao flowers on the same tree can’t pollinate/get pollinated by each other, but only by flowers from a different tree. So if you want your cacao tree to set fruit, you will need to have 2 trees. Hand-pollinate the flower in the early morning. Don’t panic if some of the resulting pods drop. It is natural for some pods to shrivel, leaving no more than two on each cushion.

Propagation

Cacao trees are usually propagated through seeds, but can also be propagated by grafting or air layering.

Very detailed! Beautiful world building! Strong Heroine!
Format: Kindle
Starts off a little slow and confusing with different POV’s, but starts to all come together towards the middle to make an elaborate plot line and makes it all worth it. Beautiful world building and attention to detail as well as great writing. The cliffhanger was gut wrenching! Can’t wait for the next book!

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.

Fallen Angels, fae, vampires, oh my!
Format: Kindle
Rating: 4.5 | Spice: 2 (but a good slow-burn) • Main Characters: Huntyr and Wolf • I couldn’t wait to read this book; there was so much hype about it! And there was no doubt why. I fell in love with the characters and the plot itself. This book is mainly plot driven more than friction driven but it’s easy to follow along with. The characters are fun, easily understood. The main setting is at an academy where both the main characters are going through trials and building strength for the final test, The Transcendent. There are fantastic side characters as well. I loved the camaraderie between Huntyr and her friends. But we don’t like Lanson. 😆 We do have some plot twists that come into play throughout the book. Secrets and betrayal to be seen. I did adore Wolf and Huntyr’s relationship. It was a classic slow burn trope. They didn’t hit it off fast, but in time their feelings grew. I loved their banter, so sexy. Wolf is your next book boyfriend; Huntyr is your next vampire assassin independent bad-a*s female. Themes include loyalty, trust, self-discovery, a true slow burn romance. Side note: book ends on a angsty cliffhanger! • Emily, thank you for writing this awesome novel and I cannot wait to devour Book 2, Blood So Brutal! 😍 • Happy reading, my lovelies! xo

“My heart bows to you and you only, Huntress.”
Format: Kindle
3.5 🌟 This book popped up in my KU recommended reading suggestions and the synopsis sounded like what I was in the mood for. I'm so glad I took a chance on it. I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about it and ended up really liking it. I love when this happens. The main characters are likeable and I easily found myself rooting for them. There is a mystery element to each of their backstories that I enjoyed watching unfold and can't wait to get more of. Wolf, in particular, has me fixated. Love him. I found this to be an entertaining, addictive read with a plot that moves along at a good pace. It reads so easily I found myself very reluctant to put it down. Lots of twists and turns and the angst is there. A good set up for the next book to come, for sure. My issues with this book....the dialogue feels a bit juvenile at times and there is a repetitive over use of a particular word phrasing that I found myself giving the ole eye-roll to. There are, without a doubt, some pretty cliche moments that gave me a bit of the cringe. I think this could've certainly 100% benefited from more depth regarding the world building. Perhaps the world building was sacrificed to keep the pacing quick? Just a guess. Also, the lack of consistency of character for the FMC was really evident and so she feels quite illogical at times. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable read that hit the spot well enough for me. That ending certainly has me impatiently pining for book 2!

Interesting take on the genre
Format: Kindle
True rating: 3.25 ⭐️ I enjoyed the fresh take on the genre. The best way I could describe the setting and world is an apocalyptic dystopian version of Farie where vampires, fae, and angles struggle to survive in what is left of the world. It was definitely interesting throwing the academy/hunger games aspect into this world as well. Even though I guessed the final reveal early on in the book, I kept hoping I was wrong, and it would take a surprising turn. While the "plot twists" were a bit predictable to me, I still enjoyed the ride this book took me on. Another downfall for me was the plot holes in the world building... I.E. if society has fallen and the world is in the aftermath of war, how are there trains running around the world? Just to take young adults to the trials to get into the golden city? How is the train maintained, the tracks clear, etc? However, I did enjoy the FMC & MMC and thought they were fleshed out nicely. I also enjoyed the side characters but wish some were developed more like Ashalin (sp?). I do find myself rooting for the MCs to succeed and find happiness together, which is obviously an important aspect for romantasy. Overall, was this an earth-shattering, mind-bending, terrific piece of literature? No. But was it the worst thing I've read this year? Also, no. This book has, to me, the bones of a great read & just needs a bit more to push it from an alright book to a great book. Overall ratings: Plot- 3.5⭐️ World building 3⭐️ Spice 2.5 🌶🌶 Main characters 4 ⭐️ Supporting characters 3.5⭐️
