Ficus elastica 'Tineke'

Ficus elastica 'Tineke' is a variegated rubber plant with broad glossy leaves patterned in dark green, cream and pale green, often with reddish-brown colouring on the midrib, petiole and fresh growth. The variegation is irregular, with every leaf developing a slightly different balance of green centre, pale margin and soft blush.

It grows as an upright evergreen indoor tree or shrub, with new leaves forming from the shoot tips inside protective sheaths. As the stems mature, they thicken and gain height, while pruning can encourage extra branching and a fuller outline.

Cream and green leaves with red-toned details

  • Leaf pattern: Broad leaves show irregular green and cream variegation across the upper surface.
  • Leaf size: Mature leaves can become large on established plants with good light and root space.
  • Colour detail: Reddish-brown tones can appear on midribs, petioles and new growth.
  • Growth habit: Upright woody stems can be kept narrow or pruned to encourage branching.
  • Leaf contrast: Pale margins brighten the broad green leaf surface and highlight the red-toned midrib.

How Ficus elastica 'Tineke' grows

Ficus elastica is a wet-tropical Asian fig tree in Moraceae. In nature it grows as a tree, while indoor plants remain limited by pot size, light, pruning and household conditions. Ficus elastica 'Tineke' has thick rubber plant leaves and woody stems. Bright indirect light reduces scorch risk on pale sections and allows new leaves to expand firmly.

The plant’s new leaves open from coloured sheaths and expand into firm, leathery blades. Over time, the central stem becomes stronger and the upper leaves become heavier; occasional pot rotation exposes new growth to light from several sides.

Light, watering and leaf care for Ficus elastica 'Tineke'

  • Light: Give bright indirect light. Pale leaf sections can scorch in strong direct sun, especially through glass.
  • Watering: Let the top part of the mix dry before watering, then drain fully to protect the roots from standing water.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant mix with bark, perlite, pumice or similar aerating material.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, with good growth around normal indoor temperatures above 18 °C.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity reduces sticking as new leaves unfurl and limits dry-edge stress on pale margins.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring and summer while new leaves are forming. Reduce feeding in low-light months.
  • Pruning: Cut above a node to control height or encourage side shoots, and handle the latex sap carefully.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the large leaves with a soft damp cloth to remove dust from the cream and green surface.

Problem signs on Ficus elastica 'Tineke'

  • Brown cream sections: Check for direct sun, hot glass, dry air or inconsistent watering.
  • Yellow lower leaves: Inspect root moisture and drainage, especially if the pot feels heavy for several days.
  • Leaf drop: Review recent moves, cold draughts and sudden changes in watering intervals.
  • Leaning growth: Rotate the pot gradually and move it closer to bright filtered light if the stems pull strongly in one direction.
  • Pests: Check undersides, petioles and midribs for scale, mites or mealybugs, then isolate and treat early.

Safety with Ficus elastica 'Tineke'

Ficus elastica 'Tineke' produces milky latex from damaged leaves and stems. The sap can irritate skin and eyes, and ingestion may irritate pets or children. Keep it out of reach, wear gloves when pruning and clean away any sap from tools, shelves or skin.

Botanical background and name meaning

Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem. is the accepted species name. Ficus comes from the Latin name for fig, while elastica refers to the latex historically associated with rubber.

Broad cream-and-green leaves, reddish-brown midribs and upright woody stems shape the variegated rubber plant canopy.

Cute and STABLE
Size: 12-18 Months Toddler, Color: Navy Leather
This brand was recommended by a family member as being good for kids who are learning how to walk, and I definitely agree. My son had a different pair of shoes from Carter’s that fit well and looked cute, but the soles were a little too slick for an early walker despite having little rubberized dots on them. I like that these have more realistic soles, with real traction and support, but still allow the kid’s foot to flex. My son is very comfortable in them and was immediately noticeably more stable while standing and practicing walking in them. Bonus- they are super cute and this design is neutral enough to go with plenty of his clothes. My only small complaint is a little thread coming loose on one shoe, but so far it isn’t causing any issues/doesn’t seem to be unraveling anything structural. Highly recommend overall!

Great shoes!
Size: 18-24 Months Toddler, Color: Grey Leather
Love these shoes, only shoes I put my 15 month old in. However, they do run small. I bought 12-18 month size and my boy out grew them before 12 months old, I had to repurchase 18-24m to fit perfectly.

The BEST toddler shoe!!
Size: 18-24 Months Toddler, Color: Brooks Grey Leather
These shoes are 100% worth every penny. They are super easy to get on and off due to the fact that the tongue pulls back fully and they are flexible yet sturdy. They are excellent quality and have maintained great condition with my busy toddler at the park. The wide toe box provides great comfort for my little one’s wide feet. Buy the shoes!!!

Bummed they fell apart they are super cute
Size: 12-18 Months Toddler, Color: Raiden Camel Suede, Size: 12-18 Months Toddler, Color: Raiden Camel Suede
I’m so bummed because these shoes are so cute and highly rated but mine fell apart after only a few wears. They say light outdoor activities and I would assume they mean walking up and down the block in the neighborhood. My son is only 15 months old and doesn’t walk fast or far at all so it’s really disappointing they fell apart.

Stay on, easy to put on, but get scuffed easily. Velcro strap came apart and color came off of leather about 2 months of wear
