The String of Tears stands out due to its truly unusual foliage! Its long vines are dotted with curious round leaves- and by round, we mean totally spherical! These bright green spheres have gained the plant many common names, with comparisons to pearls, peas, beads and marbles. In reality, they are neither glass nor pearl but a specialised kind of leaf which has grown this way to reduce the surface area, allowing it to retain more water. In the wild, it roots everywhere a vine touches the ground, forming mats of tiny round leaves; as a houseplant, it is usually grown with the stems trailing, allowing it to show off the vines to the best effect!

Scientific Name
Senecio herreanus (old man plant)

Common Name
String of Tears, String of Pearls, String of Beads, Rosary Vine, String of Peas, String of Marbles, Senecio herreianus

Origin
Native to dry areas in Southwest Africa

Light
The correct light level is key for string of tears! Make sure it's in a bright spot, but doesn't get direct sunlight in summer as this can scorch the foliage. A splash of morning or evening sun wil benefit it over winter, though, when the light is weaker and shorter.

Water
Allow all of the soil to dry out between waters; make sure the pot feels light before you water again! Bottom-watering is a good way to look after the foliage when watering, as if you water onto foliage and it cannot dry properly, this can lead to issues with mould on the plant.

Humidity
Low humidity is what this plant is used to. an occasional hose-down will help to keep the leaves free of dust but make sure they can dry out quickly afterwards to prevent issues with rot!

Soil
A well-draining soil with added sand, or one designed for cacti and succulents, will be best for this plant! Repot every three years in spring as the plant grows.

Food
Fertilise every two months in the growing period and reduce to every three in autumn and winter to replicate its usual dormancy period. A specific 'cactus' feed will produce the best results.

Temperature
Temperature should ideally be between 18-26°C- make sure it doesn't drop below 15°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
To keep your String of Tears bushy, you can trim back longer stems and propagate the cuttings! You will get best results by choosing healthy foliage and cutting at least six inches (15cm). Remove older leaves and put the bare end into soil. Increased humidity will help, so if you can place it in a plastic bag in a dry location, it should root more quickly.

Accurate and easy to use
Size: 3 kg - Normal Size, Size: 3 kg - Normal Size
At the moment, I can't think of anything I dislike about this scale. The buttons are responsive, the measurements are accurate (I checked the readings with a couple of calibration weights from a scientific scale), the displays are clear. Operation in daily use is very simple. 1. Turn on scale 2. After self test, place carafe and filter 3. Press "T" to tare 4. Add grinds 5. Press "||>" to weigh the grinds. This automatically tares the scale again and sets the timer to standby. It also activates the coffee to water ratio display 6. Add water and the timer automatically starts so you get a precise bloom time. The added water is weighed and displayed as you pour and the coffee to water ratio display gives you an instantaneous reading, so you can brew your perfect cup of coffee each time. The scale has a large capacity and precise resolution so it works for single small cups to large pots. All in all, the best scale I've tried so far and might pick up another one when they go on sale (again). Highly recommended.

Mostly Great, But With One Problem
Size: 3 kg - Normal Size
Overall, this is a good scale and I do like it. However, it has one flaw that I'll mention later. First, the things I like. This is a nice looking scale. I like the design and the different colored displays for time and weights. The stainless steel on black is a classic look and very stylish in my opinion. The size is just right for brewing with French press or Chemex style brewers. It has a lot of plastic, but that is how all scales of this size are, especially in this price range. Having the ratio displayed is really nice. I use that about as much as looking at the grams during a pour over. I've also been using the automatic timing feature. I didn't think I'd like that, but it is actually quite useful. I've been using it for a month off of the first charge so I think that the battery life is good. Its also nice to be able to turn off the sound so I don't have to listen to beeping early in the morning when the rest of the family is sleeping. Being able to change the units of measure is great. I've weighed coffee, baking ingredients and even small packages prior to mailing them. It handles anything under 6 lbs. The display is sensitive and reads quickly. Which leads me to the one negative about this thing. When it is weighing room temperature items like beans or an empty brewer, its accurate and gives a steady reading. However, when you start introducing hot items (like brewing coffee which is what this is for) it starts to drop weight by 0.1g every 10 to 20 seconds. Even with the included silicone cover. I've added a cork trivet and another silicone pad under the brewer which didn't seem to help much. Eventually they warm up and the issue starts. Any raise in temp causes the unit to start lowering the weight as previously described. That's why I only gave it four stars. While this is annoying to see, it doesn't seem to mess with the overall brewing ratio or mess up my coffee brewing at all. By the time its doing this, I've usually made my pours and am in the 4 to 5 minute steeping period prior to finishing and decanting. At that point, I'm really only using the timer function anyway. Therefore, I didn't give it a lower rating since I like everything else about it and its not very expensive. All things considered, I think its a good value for the money and gets the job done.

Must have on kitchen
Size: 2 kg - Mini Size
It's exactly as described. Works great so far! I bought to make matcha 🍵 when measuring is quite important for the recipe, but also used for other measurements like yeast salt etc. Really great to have silicone mat for hot products, or just hot water that I use for matcha.
