Papaver Somniferum are technically perennials and will set seed, but can also be grow as annuals in the UK. They are very are easy to grow from seed and are useful for growing in hot, dry spots where the soil is poor and they do well in coastal, exposed and gravel gardens. Their flowers lack nectar but are rich in pollen and attract a wide range of bees.
Growing Guide
Easy to grow from seed and is best sown direct where they are to flower, as they are not keen on having their roots disturbed. Sow in autumn for earlier flowers the following year, or sow successionally from mid-April to June for a long flowering period. Once sown, you will probably find that poppies self seed - seeds can remain viable for many years so can re-appear many years later!
- Make a drill by pressing a stick into moist soil. Rows need to be about 15cm apart, in a sunny site.
- Take pinches of seed and scatter thinly along the drill or you will waste seed and spend more time thinning out.
- Use a trowel or your fingers to cover seeds very lightly with soil. Label the rows and water using a watering can with a rose attachment.
- Thin seedlings out once they are about 4cm tall and again at 8cm, so that they are spaced about 15cm apart.
Olly's General Guide to Seed Sowing!
I love sowing seeds and it runs in the family - dad, granddad and finally my great-granddad for whom the hobby helped him get over his experiences in the Great War. I still get a big kick when I see the first seedling poking through from a new plant that I have never sown before or been successful at. However, even the most experienced gardeners draw "blanks" from time to time. Whilst I sow all the seeds that I sell so I know that they are viable, some are trickier than others and problems can arise so here are some tips to make "blanks" few and far between:
1) Dont Rush! Tempting though it is when that packet arrives in the post to simply bung the seeds in some compost!
2) Google and Youtube are your friends! Take some time so see the methods other people use to germinate the seed.
3) Think Nature! What conditions do seeds face? For example a seed from a tropical plant will fall to the warm, wet and dark jungle floor. A seed from the mountains of Europe will fall to the floor in Autumn, then have to endure months of freezing temperatures before germinating in the spring. So as growers, what we are trying to do is to simulate the conditions that the seeds will naturally experience and there are plenty of tricks that can be done to short cut the processes somewhat.
4) Good compost pays dividends . The best investment you can make is to purchase three bags - one of potting compost, one of vermiculite and one of horticultural sand. With these three bags I can make up whatever soil type a particular seed likes (although for most seeds I find a 50/50 mix of compost and vermiculite works just fine)
5) Rot is your enemy. The single biggest danger to seed germination is rot - either before or after "damping off" the seeds germinate. To reduce the risk, ensure you have good free draining soil mix and that it is moist but not wet. Unless the seed variety absolutely requires it I prefer NOT to cover my seeds trays with plastic bags, Whilst germination is often faster this way, it greatly increases the risk of rot. I prefer to place my seed trans inside a watertight plastic tray and water from the bottom - airflow over the surface reduces the risk.

Beautiful story, exquisitely told

This is one of my favorite love stories. There is much to love, but I think the best thing is how the author allows the reader to discover the characters' feelings. I am always upset when an author clobbers me over the head with what a character thinks or feels. I like when I get to feel it right along with the character. That was expertly accomplished here. Great read!

Five Stars, No Notes
Format: Kindle
I love Carley Fortune’s books, but I think this one might just be edging out the top spot in my ranking list. Her writing is lyrical and engaging and just wraps you right in and has you grinning like an idiot the entire way through. This was a really quick read for me because I didn’t want to put it down. I am also not usually someone who highlights quotes in books, but the language was truly so creative and beautiful in some parts I couldn’t resist saving them for later. I still am not over it.
Our Perfect Storm is a childhood friends to lovers romance where you truly fall in love with the characters and are rooting for them throughout the book. There is so much yearning and heartache and I totally ate this up. Frankie is a chaotic spitfire of a character and I found her to be incredibly relatable, and loved how Carley makes her character lovable because of her rough edges, not in spite of it. George is so sweet and patient and pines after Frankie, totally making you swoon. You want to scream at them the entire book to just get together already.
The tropical vacation with a “bucket list” setting gave me almost PWMOV vibes and I loved it. George really throws himself into helping Frankie’s grief, and it’s a very healing process to witness. I also feel as though the unpredictable and chaotic dynamics of human relationships were well portrayed in this story, not only through the intimate relationships but with the extended families as well. I don’t want to share spoilers, but I really appreciated where Frankie and her mom landed in the end, it felt like a real turning point for her. The ending is truly beautiful and feels like a breath of fresh air.
This book just fully wrapped me up in nostalgia and cozy magic and made me smile through the end. I would highly recommend for any Carley Fortune lovers or anyone looking for a feel good read.

Letdown after ESA & OGS but Still a Great Summer Read
Format: Hardcover
Highly anticipated after 2025's One Golden Summer sequel to Every Summer After because The Florek boys are everything. Loved the setting (Tofino sounds gorgeous), but the book was off balance. Long-suffering George was so thoughtful & obviously in love with his BFF Frankie. Other than shared history, I wondered why. She's supposed to be independent (as was Jo in her fave book Little Women), but she spends a lot of time sobbing, moping, resenting, & pushing everyone away. She's oblivious to George's obvious devotion even when he's traveling the world for work & firmly consigns him to the friend zone (but doesn't date anyone else beyond a device driven brief engagement to wildly unsuitable guy). At 30, she still thinks romance will kill their 22 yr friendship? Even their magical week in Tofino when they're together is unsettled by her reticence & constant disbelief they can be a couple. There are a lot of flashbacks to the besties at 8, 12, 16, 20, & last year that disrupt the flow & don't serve the story. Still, she writes beautiful sentences and has the ability to transport. It's a good book, just a 4 not a 5.
