Philodendron 'Thai Sunrise' – Variegated Hybrid with Lime and Dark Green Leaves

Philodendron 'Thai Sunrise' is a colourful scandent hybrid that combines vigorous growth with striking variegation. Its foliage shows an unusual lime-green centre framed by deep green margins, creating a vibrant contrast not often seen in philodendrons. With light green petioles and a quick climbing habit, this hybrid is both easy to care for and highly ornamental.

Unique traits of 'Thai Sunrise'

  • Foliage pattern: lime centres bordered by dark green margins, stable variegation.
  • Petioles: light green, supporting slender climbing stems.
  • Growth habit: scandent vine, quick to climb when provided with a support.
  • Overall look: bright, cheerful foliage that stands out in any plant collection.

Background and origin

This hybrid was developed in Thailand and has become popular with collectors for its distinctive variegation. While its exact parentage remains uncertain, its growth traits resemble P. erubescens hybrids, combining vigour with reliable colouring.

Care guide for Philodendron 'Thai Sunrise'

  • Light: bright, indirect exposure keeps variegation crisp; avoid harsh sun.
  • Temperature: thrives at 20 – 28 °C; do not expose to prolonged drops below 16 °C.
  • Humidity: 60 – 80% supports strong leaf development and steady climbing.
  • Watering: allow the upper 2 – 3 cm of substrate to dry before watering again.
  • Substrate: airy, chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coco coir.
  • Feeding: light but regular fertilisation during active growth keeps colour vivid.
  • Support: climbs readily with a moss pole or trellis, producing larger leaves.

Common grower issues

  • Variegation fading: often due to low light; move to a brighter filtered position.
  • Yellowing leaves: usually caused by overwatering or compacted substrate.
  • Leggy growth: indicates insufficient light or lack of vertical support.
  • Pests: keep an eye out for mites and thrips on tender foliage.

Collector’s notes

  • Comparison: unlike marbled variegates, its pattern is linear with a stable lime centre.
  • Ease of growth: one of the more forgiving variegated philodendron hybrids.
  • Display: works beautifully on poles where the contrasting leaf pattern is best viewed.
  • Toxicity: philodendrons contain calcium oxalate; avoid ingestion by pets and children.

Etymology

Genus:Philodendron (Schott, 1830), from Greek philo- “loving” + dendron “tree,” reflecting its climbing habit.Cultivar name: ‘Thai Sunrise’ references its origin and the bright, sunrise-like tones in the foliage.

Propagation and size

  • Propagation: stem cuttings root quickly in warm, humid conditions.
  • Medium: sphagnum or fine bark/perlite blends support rooting success.
  • Size indoors: can reach 1 – 1.5 m with support; leaves grow larger with maturity.

Why Philodendron 'Thai Sunrise' is worth collecting

Bright, reliable, and vigorous, Philodendron 'Thai Sunrise' is one of the most accessible variegated hybrids. With its lime and dark green patterned foliage, it adds a splash of colour and energy to any collection while remaining easy to grow.

Amazing compilation of historical facts that I never heard before
Format: Kindle
Our local priest quoted from this book on Easter Sunday and that made me curious to read it. The book starts slowly, but the second half is a great history lesson, loaded with information that I had never known. Compelling.

Excellent Introduction to Hemodynamics for a Resident or Fellow
Format: Paperback
Background: PGY-2 Internal Medicine Resident with no prior hemodynamic monitoring experience Overall: Fantastic introduction to the field. The author will assume you know the following prior to starting the book: - Moderate understanding of EKG’s - Anatomical arrangement of the heart and its vessels - Understanding some of the practical effects of atrial fibrillation (lack of an atrial contraction, etc) Specifics: The book can be picked up without significant prior knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring. I initially tried to read Hemodynamic Rounds, and the authors of that book did not introduce significant pieces of information, such as the normal pressures of the heart chambers, what each wave means on the monitor, and how is each chamber of the heart/vessel represented on the monitor (where do I look to see the left ventricular pressure?). In contrast to that, Dr. Hanna provides a book that appears to be intended for residents/cardiology fellows or zealous pre-cardiology interns who are looking for an introduction to the field that maintains enough depth to be practical. Its first section goes over the relevant physiology and pathophysiology and the mechanical/hemodynamic representation. The second section is a series of practice problems with excellent explanations which reviews all of the prior concepts and helps to solidify them in the reader’s mind. The reader will learn to appreciate the relevant waveforms and their relevant representations, the normal values for the cardiac chambers and vessels, and eventually the changes to these normal values during pathologic states. As others have mentioned, it is concise, but this also makes it a bit dense initially when the reader encounters the basic four waveforms and attempts to memorize the normal pressures. Once you get over that initial learning curve, the rest of the first section goes a bit faster. Overall, I’m very happy I purchased this book, and I feel that it has prepared me very well for time spent in the cardiac ICU.
