Dieffenbachia Long Plant

The large and showy dieffenbachia can be the perfect living decoration for the home or office. When you learn how to care for a dieffenbachia plant, you’ll find it to be adaptable to different kinds of lighting and conditions in which you might not expect a dieffenbachia houseplant to grow.

How to Care for a Dieffenbachia Plant
Problems with dieffenbachia plant can be easily overcome in most situations. The most common problem with growing dumbcane dieffenbachia is too much moisture. Overwatering is a common problem with many houseplants and the dieffenbachia houseplant is no exception. Plant the dumbcane in a well-draining soil and water lightly, keeping the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Check the soil to make sure it is dry an inch down before watering the dieffenbachia plant.

Other problems with dieffenbachia plant may be created by improper lighting. When growing dieffenbachia, most varieties do best in a filtered light situation, where bright to moderate light shines through a sheer curtain or other filtering window cover. Filtered light is particularly important in the spring and summer, when the dieffenbachia houseplant is producing new, tender leaves that are subject to sunburn if the light is too bright or shines directly on the plant.

Rotate the dieffenbachia houseplant regularly to provide adequate light to all sides of the plant and prevent it from reaching toward the light on one side. When growing dumbcane dieffenbachia of various cultivars, check light requirements for the particular plant. Some dieffenbachia plants require low filtered light. Most cultivars do fine with a low light environment; however, growth is slower or stops, but the plant will remain healthy and attractive.

When growing dumbcane dieffenbachia, fertilize twice a month to encourage growth and a healthy plant. A houseplant food high in nitrogen can be applied at half strength.

Dieffenbachia Houseplant Problems

  • Browning bottom leaves on the dumbcane dieffenbachia is normal for the plant, snip them off to keep the plant tidy.
  • If other leaves appear bleached, with a webby substance on the underside, check and treat the plant for spider mites with insecticidal soap spray or neem oil. Don’t use chemicals for this issue on the growing dumbcane dieffenbachia, as it often makes the problem worse.
  • If you notice water droplets on the dumbcane plant, you may wonder “why does my dieffenbachia plant drip water?” This is the byproduct of the transpiration process, which is active in most plants.
  • It’s also important to note that the leaves, if chewed or eaten, can cause temporary swelling of the tongue and throat, leading to a temporary loss of speech and the common plant name of dumbcane. While this is usually not serious, it can cause suffocation. Avoid placing the dumbcane plant where curious children or pets might be tempted to taste it.

Watering and Feeding

  • Being from the aroid family – with cousins like the Aglaonema, Spathiphyllum and Philodendron – let’s us know dieffenbachia likes humidity and during the summer lots of water. Soil stays moist but not wet. During the winter season watering should be reduced.
  • During the primary growing season – March Through October – feed every other week when watering using a complete liquid food. During the winter months use NO fertilizer and water only.

Soil, Potting and Transplanting

  • Dieffenbachia prefers a well draining soil. I’ve had excellent results using 2 parts peatmoss and 1 part perlite. An African violet soil mix would work well also.
  • A large plant like “Tropic Snow” capable of reaching 4-5 feet can be grown and live in a relatively small pot. The problem is usually not pot size but plant size making the plant top heavy.
  • For top heavy plants use a cachepot to stabalize the top heavy plant
  • When potting or repotting plants, springtime is best just before the growing season begins. Do not overpot!

Great product, great company!
Size: 1 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I found some of this years ago and loved it. Ran out, couldn't figure out where to find more then this last Christmas my mother gives me some of the rose salve and I remembered how much I loved the lotion. So as I was looking for more of the rose salve (also AMAZING) I got some of the lotion. It goes on really light feeling, but has some serious softening abilities. I use the salve on my knuckles first then use like a Chick-pea size amount of the lotion overnight and my hands are great the next day, especially considering how much I've been washing my hands and using hand sanitizer these last few weeks. It smells like lemon meringue pie, and is more lightly perfumed than BBB stuff (which I love since I'm prone to headaches). I love CO Bigelow products, have yet to try one I dislike. I use the overnight lip balm in the winter or during colds when my lips crack and dry the most. I use the rose salve for my regular daytime lip balm (stuff is the duct tape of the salve world, no joke!) and for extra relief on any dry skin. Some might argue it's a little expensive for the size you get, but you don't need much of any of them so they last forever. I still have half a tube of rose salve lip balm from Christmas and I use it every day, several times. They all smell good, they all feel really clean on, they do what they're supposed to without adding products (like glycerin) that will cause further dryness or chapping. Thank you so much, CO Bigelow for making so many quality products and being so consistent with the quality for so long. Fan for life here!

Consistent Quality
Size: 1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've used this off and on for years and it's my favorite. I'm extremely picky with things I slather on my skin, and usually make my own from balms, oils, lotions etc. from scratch..with herbs infused for deep healing of skin and muscles. I didn't make enough this year so had to turn to store-bought. I'm not a fan of too many ingredients, and this lotion has more than I prefer, but it works really well if I need it. Winter skin, hands after doing dishes, etc..this lotion fixes it. It goes on, absorbs fast and feels light. The smell is great too. It's not overpowering and doesn't give me a headache like 99% of scented things do. I love this stuff, only wish it was cheaper. It's great, but the ingredient list isn't very good; it doesn't cost a fortune to make this.

Best hand lotion I have ever used
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This lotion is great. Smells lemon fresh. It doesn’t leave your hands greasy or like they have a layer of lotion on them. Goes right into skin no sticky residue.

MAKES HANDS SOFT AND SMELLS GREAT, BUT TOO SMALL!!
Size: 1 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Purchased BIgelow lotions and soaps. Love the lemon scent. I purchased this, thinking I was getting a larger tube. Not happy with the size and price of this. I will shop better next time--and Bigelow loses a star. Nice product!

Perfect hand cream
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I first bought the small tube that didn't last long. Then I purchased the larger tube so I wouldn't run out. I love the lemon scent and the cream is perfect to keep my hands soft and moisturized. You can't go wrong with this product. I highly recommend it.
