Echeveria 'Black Prince'

Black goes with everything 🖤

Family: Crassulaceae • Pot size: 8.5 cm

Crassulaceae Evergreen Very bright light Easy care Compact rosette

Echeveria 'Black Prince' is one of the most recognisable dark Echeverias in cultivation, with small, disciplined rosettes that combine almost black to deep burgundy outer tones with a brighter green centre. This strong contrast gives it a very clean, contemporary look, which is why it works beautifully both on its own in a small pot and inside succulent compositions where a darker, steadier element is needed to visually anchor the arrangement. Despite its dramatic appearance, it is a plant with clear and simple needs, ideal even for someone just starting with succulents, as long as it gets plenty of light, infrequent watering and a potting mix that drains properly. Its colouring shifts noticeably with season, temperature and light intensity, which makes it even more interesting through the year without losing its signature dark identity.

Light

☀️ High
The more correct light it receives, the deeper its colouring becomes.

Watering

💧 Infrequent
Water only when the potting mix has dried out well.

Colour

🖤 Dark
The rosettes deepen noticeably in brighter conditions.

Flowering

🌺 Red-toned
In good maturity it can flower from late autumn into winter.

What makes it stand out

  • 🖤 Almost black rosettes with a brighter green centre.
  • ✨ A clean, geometric form that creates strong visual impact at a small size.
  • 🌿 An ideal choice for contrast in succulent collections.

Ideal use

  • 🪴 On very bright windowsills, desks and shelves with sun or strong light.
  • 🏡 In succulent arrangements where a darker balancing point is needed.
  • 📐 In minimal spaces that need a small plant with strong geometry and character.

Where to place it

Place it in the brightest spot you have, ideally close to a window with abundant light and, where possible, a few hours of gentle direct sun. In locations or seasons with very harsh summer sun, especially behind glass, a little protection during the hottest hours helps prevent stress to the foliage. It looks especially good on windowsills, minimal surfaces and in small pots with a clean aesthetic, as long as shady positions and constant root moisture are avoided.

What it pairs well with

  • With lighter-toned Echeveria, Sedum and Graptopetalum for strong colour contrast within the same arrangement.
  • With Haworthia and other small-scale succulents that share similar light and watering needs.
  • With pale or cement-toned pots that visually emphasise the dark tones of the rosette.

In a composition it works like a dark anchor point: small in scale, but very strong in contrast.

Origin of the cultivar click to read

Taxonomic history: Echeveria 'Black Prince' is a hybrid cultivated variety within the family Crassulaceae and one of the best-known dark Echeverias in ornamental growing.

Selection & breeding: The cultivar is generally attributed to a cross between Echeveria shaviana and Echeveria affinis, and is associated with Frank Reinelt in California. It was already in circulation by 1970.

Name meaning: The name 'Black Prince' captures the character of the cultivar precisely: dark, disciplined and with a very clean, almost regal geometry in the rosette.

Morphological character: It is distinguished by small, dense rosettes with leaves that darken strongly in bright light, while the centre often stays greener and adds extra depth to the look.

Spread in cultivation: It became widely loved very quickly because it combines easy care, small size and one of the most dramatic colours an Echeveria can offer in everyday cultivation.

1) Potting mix: Use a very free-draining succulent mix so the roots stay aerated and do not hold prolonged moisture.
2) Watering: Water only when the potting mix has dried out well. Excess water is the most common reason for failure.
3) Light: Keep it in a very bright position and acclimatise it gradually if it is going to receive stronger sun, especially in summer.
🔎 Feature Details
🌿 Botanical name Echeveria 'Black Prince'
🪴 Pot 8.5 cm
☀️ Light Very bright position, with sun or strong light to develop deeper colouring.
💧 Watering Infrequent, only when the mix dries well. Constant moisture does not suit it.
🌡️ Temperature It enjoys warm, bright conditions and needs protection from frost and heavy winter moisture.
🍃 Foliage Evergreen, compact, in deep burgundy to almost black tones with a greener centre.
🌺 Flowering It can produce small red-toned flowers from late autumn into winter.
🐾 Toxicity Non-toxic — suitable for homes with children and pets.
💡 Tip: If you want deeper colour, give it more light gradually rather than suddenly. Correct light darkens the rosette without stressing it.
🤔 Did you know? 'Black Prince' became so popular because it brought an almost black palette into Echeveria, something that was rare at the time in such a small and easy rosette.

🧠 Greenleaf for plant nerds — scientific details nobody asked for geek
  • 🧬 'Black Prince' is generally regarded as a hybrid between Echeveria shaviana and Echeveria affinis, which helps explain its combination of dense rosette form and very dark colouring.
  • 🌞 The dark tones intensify in brighter light because the foliage builds more protective pigmentation when conditions favour it.
  • 💧 As with many Echeveria, the bigger risk is not thirst but prolonged moisture around the base and roots.
  • 🌿 The compact rosette is not only aesthetic. It helps the plant manage light and water reserves very efficiently.
  • 🌺 Flowering appears on a flowering stalk rather than destroying the centre of the rosette, so the plant continues growing normally afterwards.
  • 🐾 Echeveria are generally considered among the more pet-friendly succulents, which adds to their practical value at home.
Does it need a lot of sun? light

Yes, it wants plenty of light to keep a compact form and deep colouring. In very harsh summer sun behind glass, a little protection during the hardest hours helps.

How often should I water it? watering

Water only when the potting mix has dried well. In winter, watering is reduced noticeably.

Why is it not always that black? colour

The colouring changes with light, season and temperature. With more correct light, it usually darkens more strongly.

Is it good for arrangements? design

Yes, it is excellent in succulent arrangements because it brings dark contrast and very clean geometry on a small scale.

Good height, versatile.
Color: Brown, Size: 4 Panel-67”
Well made, nice style. Best indoors since it tends to blow over if outside.

Esthetically sound, materially flimsy
Color: Beige, Size: 4 Panel-67”
The item at first seemed okay and quality was good. But it’s a little flimsy and tips over frequently. I’m thinking of returning and replacing pretty soon.

Perfect for working from home, creating privacy in my home office.
Color: Beige, Size: 4 Panel-67”
Easy to put together, took about 10 minutes by myself. I laid it on the ground folded (make sure the same direction for the brackets match). The only issue I had was one screw would simply not go into one side of the connectors. Using it as a background for my home office, so it won’t be moved often, so not super concerned, not enough to take the rest of it apart to see if I could fix the issue. Looks great, creates the privacy I needed for meetings.
