The root system is approximately 1.5" square by 2.25" deep. The leaves/stems can be 4-5 inches tall.  Plants are grown in 72 cell trays so that they will be rooted but small enough for efficient shipping. Grow your own orange turmeric spice at home. Turmeric is in the same family as ginger. The roots are harvested and used fresh or dried into powder. Plants have tall and broad tropical foliage and can produce white flowers. Keep in mind, turmeric needs hot, humid weather for about eight months to thrive. It has curcumin, which gives it it's color and is known for being an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound. 

Turmeric is propagated thru rhizomes. I sprout rhizomes in "plant plug" sizes. ***Please note that sometimes I have to trim the leaves to fit in the shipping box which does not harm the plant- they will grow back quickly***. I like to plant ginger in grow bags to control their spread. They spread under ground thru their rhizomes. Plus it is easy to dump the grow bags at harvest time. You can start harvesting pieces of rhizome as needed in about 6 to 9 months.

Turmeric is a tropical plant. It is perennial in garden zones +9, or where the ground doesn't freeze. If the ground freezes, it will kill the rhizome. Plant them in containers if your ground freezes and bring in doors once temperatures drop below 50F. Turmeric plants go dormant during the winter and the top vegetative growth will die back. It will start sprouting new growth when spring arrives. Plants can get as tall as 4-5FT. If you bring it in doors, it is ok to cut the stems down if you have to. They thrive in wet soils and shady spots.

How to Plant
I recommend that you plant the plug in a 1 gallon container so you can monitor its growth. Use potting mix or compost. Once it has developed a bigger root system, you can plant outside or pot up.
