The Calathea musaica ‘Variegated' is a rare and refined variety of the well-known musaica. Whereas the standard form is already praised for its intriguing mosaic pattern, this variëgated selection adds to it. In addition to the lattice pattern, the leaves display irregular areas or stripes of lighter shades ranging from yellow-green to almost white. The result is a unique and playful pattern that makes this plant a true showpiece for the enthusiast of unusual foliage plants.
Origin
The basic species Calathea musaica originates from Brazil, where it grows on the shady forest floor of tropical rain forests. There the species has adapted to filtered light, constant heat and high humidity. The 'Variegated' form is an extremely rare selection that is only sporadically offered in cultivation, making it very popular with collectors.
Characteristics
The leaf displays a fine, grid-like pattern resembling a digital mosaic - one of the most refined leaf drawings among the Calathea's. At the 'Variegated's form, parts of this pattern are interrupted by lighter areas or stripes, making each leaf unique. It grows compactly and forms a bushy shrub with medium-sized leaves that exude a natural elegance.
Care
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too bright sunlight can burn the leaves, but too little light reduces variety.
Temperature
This variety feels at home at a constant temperature of 18-26°C and does not tolerate cold below 15°C.
Substrate
An airy, organic substrate that retains moisture but drains well is ideal. A mix of airy potting soil, tree bark and some sphagnum works well.
Humidity
High humidity (60-80%) is essential to keep the leaves beautiful. Brown edges are prevented by regular spraying or using a humidifier.
Nutrition
During spring and summer, fertilize bi-weekly with a mild houseplant fertilizer. In winter, a monthly donation is sufficient.
Watering
Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater. Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist, without leaving the roots wet for long periods of time.
Leaf care
Dust the leaves regularly so that the pattern and variety remain visible. Avoid leaf shine products that may affect the natural texture.
Flowering
Although the plant can form small flowers, it is appreciated almost exclusively for its foliage. Variegation makes this selection a living eye-catcher that is attractive year-round.
