Monstera adansonii ‘European Mint’ is a rare and highly sought-after variegated form of Monstera adansonii, prized for its soft mint-green marbling and distinctive perforated leaves.

Unlike standard variegated forms that display cream or white sectors, ‘European Mint’ features a subtle blend of pale green, icy mint and mid-green tones. The variegation often appears as speckling, splashes, or marbled patterns across the foliage, giving each leaf a unique, almost frosted appearance.

As the plant matures, its signature oval fenestrations (holes) become more pronounced, enhancing its sculptural, tropical look. It can be grown trailing from shelves or trained up a moss pole for larger, more dramatic foliage.

Key Features

  • 🌿 Soft mint and green marbled variegation

  • 🌿 Classic Monstera fenestrated leaves

  • 🌿 Climbing or trailing growth habit

  • 🌿 Rare European-selected cultivar

  • 🌿 Fast-growing in ideal conditions

Growth Habit

‘European Mint’ is a climbing aroid. In its natural habitat, Monstera adansonii climbs trees using aerial roots. Indoors, it thrives when supported by:

  • Moss poles

  • Coco coir poles

  • Trellis frames

If left unsupported, it will trail elegantly, producing smaller leaves.

Providing vertical support encourages:

  • Larger foliage

  • More pronounced fenestrations

  • Stronger overall growth

Care Guide

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential.

  • Ideal position: Near an east- or west-facing window

  • South-facing windows should be filtered with sheer curtains

  • Avoid low light — variegation may fade

  • Avoid harsh direct sun — can scorch pale mint sections

Variegated plants require slightly more light than solid green forms because the pale areas contain less chlorophyll.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry.

  • Spring/Summer: Usually every 7–10 days

  • Autumn/Winter: Reduce frequency

Always:

  • Allow excess water to drain

  • Never leave sitting in water

  • Use pots with drainage holes

Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot, especially in variegated plants.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity.

  • Ideal range: 60%+

  • Will tolerate average household humidity

  • Benefits from:

    • Humidifiers

    • Grouping with other plants

    • Pebble trays

Low humidity may cause crisping on lighter variegated areas.

Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–27°C

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C

  • Keep away from draughts and radiators

Stable warmth encourages consistent growth.

Soil & Potting Mix

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix such as:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite

  • Horticultural charcoal

Good aeration prevents root rot and supports healthy aerial roots.

Feeding

Feed during active growth (March–September):

  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser

  • Feed every 2–4 weeks

  • Reduce or stop feeding in winter

Avoid overfeeding, as variegated plants can be more sensitive to salt build-up.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim leggy stems to encourage bushier growth

  • Remove fully reverted green leaves if maintaining variegation

  • Wipe leaves gently to remove dust

  • Rotate the plant for even growth

Cuttings root easily in water or sphagnum moss.

Propagation

Propagate via stem cuttings:

  1. Ensure each cutting has at least one node

  2. Root in:

    • Water

    • Sphagnum moss

    • Perlite mix

  3. Keep warm and humid

Roots typically appear within 2–4 weeks.

Common Issues

Yellow leaves

  • Often overwatering

Brown edges on variegation

  • Low humidity or inconsistent watering

Loss of variegation (reversion)

  • Insufficient light

  • Genetic instability

If fully green leaves appear, prune back to a variegated node.

Is Monstera adansonii ‘European Mint’ Rare?

Yes. ‘European Mint’ is a selective cultivar developed within European growing programmes. Its stable mint-toned variegation makes it more desirable — and typically more expensive — than standard variegated Monstera adansonii.

Because variegation is less chlorophyll-rich, growth can be slightly slower than solid green varieties, but under optimal conditions it remains a vigorous climber.

Styling Ideas

  • Train up a moss pole for a statement plant

  • Let trail from high shelving for a cascading look

  • Pair with darker foliage plants for contrast

  • Display in neutral ceramic pots to highlight mint tones

Toxicity

Like other Monsteras, it is toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and children.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
