Philodendron bipennifolium ‘Golden Violin’

Philodendron bipennifolium ‘Golden Violin’ has yellow-green leaves on a climbing stem, with mature blades developing the violin-like outline associated with the species. Young leaves often start simpler, then the blade can narrow through the middle and form stronger lobing with age.

Philodendron bipennifolium is a variable species, and mature leaves may become panduriform, hastate or lobed as the plant develops. In Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’, the yellow-green colour shows on young growth, while the mature blade shape becomes clearer as the plant climbs and ages.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ colour and leaf shape

  • Colour: Bright golden to chartreuse leaves, especially noticeable on fresh and well-grown growth.
  • Leaf shape: Mature blades can develop the violin-like outline associated with Philodendron bipennifolium.
  • Species background: The species is native from southern Venezuela to northern and eastern Brazil, with Suriname included in its documented range.
  • Growth habit: A climbing Philodendron from the wet tropical biome.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ mature leaf development

Philodendron bipennifolium was published by Schott in 1855. Mature leaves can narrow through the centre before widening again near the upper section, creating the violin-like shape seen in well-developed plants.

A young Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ may not show the full violin outline immediately. As the plant matures, a climbing stem can produce larger blades with a clearer waist, more pronounced lobing and a stronger contrast between juvenile and adult leaves.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ climbing and leaf care

  • Support: Add a pole or plank before the vine becomes long. A climbing surface helps mature leaf shape develop more clearly.
  • Light: Bright filtered light supports compact growth and helps the plant build enough energy for larger mature leaves. Avoid harsh sun that can bleach or scorch tender leaves.
  • Temperature: Keep above 18°C for steady growth. Cool, wet conditions slow roots and can trigger yellowing.
  • Watering: Water once the upper 25–35% of the pot is dry. The plant dislikes stale moisture around the stem base.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity supports smoother unfurling, especially while new lobed leaves are expanding.
  • Substrate: Use a barky, open mix with mineral drainage so the root zone dries evenly after watering.
  • Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots fill the container, the mix dries very quickly, or the stem needs a heavier base for support.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth; steady low-dose nutrition is safer than heavy, irregular feeding.
  • Propagation: Propagate from stem cuttings with at least one node. Sections with aerial roots usually establish faster.
  • Pruning: Cut above a node to shorten a long vine or remove damaged growth. New shoots can develop from viable nodes.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Suitable for mineral or semi-hydro setups if transitioned gradually, with the crown kept above the reservoir line.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ stem and leaf issues

  • Small, simple leaves: Improve filtered light and climbing support. Less divided leaves often reflect growth conditions rather than a problem with the plant.
  • Brown dry areas: Check for direct sun, dry root episodes, or leaves pressing against hot glass.
  • Long gaps between leaves: Usually linked to low light or a vine left unsupported. Move brighter and train the stem upward.
  • Yellowing after watering: Inspect the mix. Fine soil can stay wet around the lower stem even when the surface looks dry.
  • Pests: Check leaf undersides, petioles and new growth for spider mites, thrips or mealybugs, especially if leaves emerge marked or distorted.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets. Sap may irritate sensitive skin during pruning or propagation.

Philodendron ‘Golden Violin’ etymology and description history

The genus name Philodendron comes from Greek roots meaning “tree-loving”. The species epithet bipennifolium refers to the divided leaf shape, and Philodendron bipennifolium was described by Schott in Oesterreichisches Botanisches Wochenblatt in 1855.

Not REAL wood - particle board with veneer - but still beautiful.
Color: 1set, Size: 24inch, Color: 1set, Size: 24inch
Came on time, easy to assemble, relatively easy to install. Metal rods are actually metal, which is nice. Flanges are good quality, very nice rustic look. Shelves are less wonderful. They are definitely not real wood at all. They are cheap particle board with veneer. I would not have purchased had I read more reviews, BUT it is still beautiful, sturdy and does the trick. We can always cut our own shelves if we should so choose and re-use the very nice hardware. 4/5 for misrepresenting as real wood, but 5/5 for functionality and aesthetic.

It takes skill to mount and not have the leaning tower of Pisa
Size: 36in, Color: 4-layer
First, the product is beautiful! I purchased this one for a smaller wall location but realized it was more massive and commanding within a room - That ended up being a good thing as I decided to put it in my office where my L shaped desk, (a Vernal executive desk), being quite massive, was successfully offset by drawing the eye up to the wall behind the desk where I had this mounted - In essence, the room was now properly balanced with the large desk - One should also know it takes some skill to mount to the wall - It should be in studs - You have to use a balance or bubble level to first get the vertical pipes parallel to each other - Also, make sure both vertical pipe supports are symmetrically matching each other from one side to the other - If you mount one upside down the wood shelves won’t lay level - We also turned the pipe supports so that the shelves would be equal distant - If I recall, if they are turned the other direction , you end up with shelves that are not equal distant with 2 shelves ending up closer to each other than the remaining shelves. The shelving is very high quality and I was very, very pleased with the end result and how the whole room was balanced with the large desk in a smaller office space.

Solid shelves that look good!
Size: 36in, Color: 3-layer, Size: 36in, Color: 3-layer
Got these as a focal piece to my basement bar (added some cheap stick on LED strip lights behind it). I’m glad I ordered these! They are sturdy, shelves are solid wood, and the overall quality of the shelves is great. They were easy to install with provided hardware (although there isn’t much instruction in terms of mounting them, just putting them together), but it was simple enough to figure out with two people and a level (one holding, one making marks). Each pipe end has 4 screw holes, so expect to put 16 holes in your wall, but as shown in the photos the shelves can hold a good amount of weight. I recommend these for anyone looking to add the industrial look to your wall with a quality built shelf.

VERY sturdy and almost foolproof
Size: 36in, Color: 3-layer, Size: 36in, Color: 3-layer
This kit is made of real wooden planks, and metal pipes and fittings. Installation is simple- assemble each end of the kit, hold it up to the wall using a magnetic level, mark the four holes for each mounting piece, then repeat with the other side. You'll need a tape measure to make sure that the ends aren't too close together or too far apart, and measure from the ceiling or floor to ensure a level surface. You will want a second set of hands for most of the install process. This kit comes with good molly bolts and strong screws that match the finish of the metal hardware. Make sure that each side of the unit is oriented the same way, as I had to flip one side after neglecting to do so at first. Retaining brackets and wood screws are included for securing each shelf to the metal frame. A power drill makes this part very easy, and can be done mostly solo as the brackets can be pinched to clip onto the frame while you attach the screws. Once installed, this unit is VERY sturdy. There is no play or wobbling when testing the attachment to the wall. If there is, tighten your screws and make sure that the fittings to the wall mounts are hand-tight. These shelves can handle heavy kitchen staples and books with no problem. It is a tier more expensive than most Ikea-style shelving, but that's worth it for the confidence that my dry goods are safely stored in a convenient place.
