Still Waters Clematis (Clematis x 'Zostiwa')

Still Waters Clematis is a compact flowering vine that brings cool-toned color and a polished garden presence to patios, trellises, and smaller planting spaces. Its manageable size makes it especially useful where a traditional clematis would feel too large, but you still want generous bloom and a strong vertical accent. This variety is a smart choice for gardeners who want refined flower color, repeat bloom, and a vine that fits naturally into containers as well as garden beds. When you want clematis beauty in a size that is easier to place and enjoy, Still Waters is an excellent fit.

It works especially well near entryways, seating areas, and decorative supports where the flowers can be appreciated at close range. The cool lavender-blue tones pair naturally with white flowers, silver foliage, and softer pink companions, giving it broad design flexibility. Because it flowers on both old and new wood, it offers a reliable display over a long stretch of the season. For gardeners who want a compact vine with a calm, elegant look and strong seasonal performance, this variety delivers lasting value.

Distinctive Features

Still Waters is a deciduous compact clematis with large icy violet-blue to lavender-blue flowers, often accented by darker purple to red-purple tipped stamens at the center. The blooms are typically about 3 to 5 inches across and may appear more rounded in the earlier flush, becoming more star-shaped later in the season. Flowering generally begins in late spring to early summer, with repeat bloom continuing through summer and often into early fall. Its combination of cool flower color, compact habit, and dependable reblooming is what makes it especially useful in smaller residential landscapes and container displays.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in full sun to partial shade, with the best flowering usually coming from good light on the vine and cooler, shaded roots.
  • Soil: Grow in fertile, moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.
  • Water: Provide regular water to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and whenever plants are grown in containers.
  • Zones: This clematis is generally hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9.
  • Deer Resistance: Deer resistance is not strongly emphasized, so it is best treated as only moderately resistant where browsing pressure is high.

Ideal Uses

  • Containers: Its compact habit makes it an excellent choice for large patio pots with a trellis, obelisk, or decorative frame.
  • Trellises: Use it on small trellises, lattice panels, and vertical supports where the cool-toned flowers can be displayed clearly.
  • Foundations: Its moderate size allows it to work well in foundation beds where a restrained flowering vine is preferred.
  • Small-Space Gardens: It is a strong fit for tighter beds and courtyard gardens where larger clematis vines would feel too aggressive.
  • Focal Point: Use Still Waters Clematis as a focal point on a patio support or compact trellis where its icy violet-blue flowers can anchor the planting and draw the eye through the season.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep the root zone evenly moist, especially during the first growing season and during hot, dry stretches.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to help keep roots cool and maintain more consistent soil moisture.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring, though older plants can be cut back more firmly to about 18 to 24 inches if rejuvenation is needed and you want flowers lower on the plant.
  • Feeding: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer or controlled-release feed to support healthy growth and repeat flowering.
  • Support: Provide a trellis or similar support early so new growth can climb neatly and display the flowers cleanly.

Why Choose Still Waters Clematis?

  • Compact Habit: Its smaller size makes it much easier to use in containers, patios, and compact gardens than larger clematis vines.
  • Cool Flower Color: The icy violet-blue blooms bring a calm, refined look that pairs easily with many garden palettes.
  • Reliable Rebloom: Flowering on both old and new wood helps extend the display through much of the growing season.
  • Versatile Placement: It works beautifully on small trellises, in decorative pots, and in foundation or courtyard plantings.
  • Polished Presence: This vine gives smaller spaces a finished vertical layer without becoming overwhelming.

Still Waters Clematis is a rewarding choice for gardeners who want a compact vine with elegant color, repeat bloom, and a more manageable garden presence. Its cool-toned flowers, adaptable habit, and broad usefulness make it especially effective in patios, containers, and smaller residential landscapes. When vertical color needs to feel calm, refined, and easy to live with, this variety stands out.

Not really what I paid for.
Flavor Name: Bacon, Size: Medium
I have two major chewer dogs, and one of REALLY chews on everything. It’s super difficult not spending an average of $50 every 2-4 months on chew toys because they go through them so fast. When I got my first boy I saw his chewing habits so I looked for a durable chew toy brand. Nylabone was everyone’s favorite so I tried two or three chew toys for him after attempting other brands. He’s six years old and this past Christmas I JUST threw away his very first chew bone. It lasted over 5 years. I was ecstatic after year one! A heavy duty chew toy brand that actually did was promised! Naturally I stuck with Nylabone, never having an issue with any of their toys until this one. Cheeseburger bacon flavored/scented was my go to for this second puppy I just got with the same, if not more, super chewing habits. He loves trying to steal our bacon and burgers so I’m like, “Okay. I’ll try this one.” It arrives, I open it. It smells like freshly burnt rubber from tires and neither of my boys will touch it. I’m also wondering how this can be durable if I can literally bend without trying much. I’m overly concerned with them digesting it and will probably toss it in the trash since my youngest boy has stomach issues already and doesn’t need this thing irritating it. In short, if you think yours will smell like bacon burger go for it. Just make sure your dog isn’t a super canine chewer because I doubt this thing would last an hour with even one of my dogs and that’s if they would actually touch it.
