Picturata Aucuba (Aucuba japonica 'Picturata')

Picturata Aucuba is a shade-loving evergreen shrub that brings bold, high-contrast foliage to the darker parts of the landscape. The glossy leaves look painted, adding year-round color where many shrubs fade into the background. It is a dependable foundation and border plant for protected sites, helping shaded beds feel more finished in every season. With consistent moisture while it establishes and decent drainage, it settles into an easy, long-term backbone shrub.

Distinctive Features

This Japanese aucuba cultivar is prized for dark green leaves with a bright golden yellow center and additional yellow speckling toward the margins, creating a dramatic, patterned look. Growth is dense and rounded, forming a substantial evergreen presence without needing constant pruning. This is a female selection and may produce red berries in fall and winter if a compatible male aucuba is nearby for pollination. Mature size is typically about 4 to 6 feet tall and about 4 to 6 feet wide, depending on site and care.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Part shade to shade, with protection from hot afternoon sun for best leaf quality.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter, and avoid sites that stay waterlogged.
  • Water: Moderate, keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods.
  • USDA Zones: 7 to 10.
  • Exposure: Best in sheltered locations out of harsh winter wind and intense reflected heat.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use one plant as a foliage focal point to brighten a shaded entry or dark corner with bold golden-centered leaves.
  • Foundation Planting: Add evergreen structure along shaded foundations where other shrubs can look thin or stressed.
  • Shade Borders: Plant under open trees and along woodland edges to bring contrast and year-round leaf shine.
  • Evergreen Massing: Group several plants to create a fuller, continuous evergreen block that reads cleanly in shade.
  • Containers: Grow in a sheltered container to bring glossy variegated foliage to porches and patios with indirect light.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Prune in early spring as needed to shape and remove any winter-damaged stems.
  • Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture and buffer temperature swings, keeping mulch a few inches off the stems.
  • Watering: Water deeply during drought, especially in the first couple of seasons and in drier shade.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring if growth is weak, using a balanced slow-release fertilizer according to label directions.
  • Berry Set: Plant a male aucuba nearby if you want consistent berry production on this female selection.

Why Choose Picturata Aucuba?

  • Shade Brightener: Golden-centered leaves add color and contrast where many shrubs stay plain green.
  • Evergreen Structure: Dense, glossy foliage keeps borders and foundations looking finished all year.
  • Low Light Performance: Thrives in part shade to shade, including tough north-facing sites.
  • Possible Winter Berries: Female plants may produce red fruit with a male pollinator nearby for extra seasonal interest.
  • Often Tolerated: Frequently less favored by deer, though browsing can still occur in high-pressure areas.

If you need an evergreen that performs in shade and still brings real visual lift, Picturata Aucuba is a dependable choice. Give it a protected site, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture while it establishes, and it will hold a dense, glossy look with minimal effort. Use it as a single accent to brighten a corner or repeat it for a cleaner, more continuous planting. Over time, it becomes a steady backbone shrub that keeps shaded areas looking polished.

Ethiopia is an essential nation-state in Africa. It has a great civilization and history. The reign of Johannes IV was crucial to the Kingdom of Ethiopia. Moreover, Haile Selassie was another vital emperor. Ethiopia suffered under communism. Currently, Ethiopia faces foreign challenges from its neighbors and political corruption domestically. Specifically, political unrest dominates the domestic life of Ethiopia. The author presents and discusses the achievements and challenges of the Ethiopian people from Ancient Times to Modern Times. It is a well-written book.

Informative, compact history of rulers, religion and struggles.
Format: Kindle
This book is well written. It filled out my knowledge of Ethiopia, which was mostly that it was isolated from neighbors and most empires. I had heard of biblical contacts, two Italian invasions, civil wars and famines. In this book I learned of contacts with ancient Rome, Byzantium, the Ottomans, and Arabs. Trade carried on the silk road, and by sea. There was influence of Judaism, Islam and competing Christian sects. The sequence of leaders were covered as well as how they came to power. Many conflicts are covered, insurrections and invasions. The Haile Selassie period is covered, as well as his downfall. Then the military period is covered, with communism and factionalism. Finally the recent period is covered,up to the present civil wars of 2022. I would recommend this compact book, for anyone planning a visit, or wanting background knowledge.

A Rough, Rocky Start
Format: Kindle
Modern Africa started after a long rough and rocky start. This book describes the trials each district has had to face to gain their freedom from Europe and what life was like in each district under the control of foreigners. As WWI began, many of Africa's districts were effected, some were forced to supply fighting men, some had their resources used to support the war effort, and some had fighting in their area. When WWII started Africa found that not much had changed. However, as Africa gained its freedom and became self governing internal wars broke out between the different tribes. Well, you will have to read the book to find out how that turned out. This book covers all that and so much more. It all written in an easy to read and understand format that Captivating History is known for and as always they do a great job of explaining everything. This is a great book and recommend you giving it a read.
