Description: Codiaeum Variegatum 'Petra', commonly known as Croton, is a vibrant tropical plant admired for its stunning, leathery leaves. The foliage of 'Petra' showcases a striking palette of green, yellow, orange, and red, with prominent veins adding depth to its colouration. This XXL specimen, standing 160–180 cm tall in a 40 cm pot, is a bold choice for adding dramatic colour and texture to indoor spaces or conservatories.

Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, Croton 'Petra' thrives in warm, humid environments. Its vibrant appearance and relatively easy care make it a popular choice for creating an exotic, lively atmosphere indoors.

Care Guide

1. Light Requirements

  • Preferred: Bright, indirect sunlight to enhance the vibrant colours of its foliage.
  • Tolerates: Moderate light, though colours may become less vivid.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and low-light conditions, which may lead to leaf drop.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry.
  • Method: Water thoroughly until excess water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Discard any standing water to prevent root rot.
  • Caution: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Crotons are sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering.

3. Humidity

  • Thrives in high humidity (50–70%).
  • Increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, placing it near a humidifier, or setting it on a pebble tray with water.

4. Temperature

  • Ideal range: 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Protect from temperatures below 15°C (59°F), cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes, as these can cause stress and leaf drop.

5. Soil

  • Requires a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix.
  • Use a standard houseplant soil mix with added perlite or sand to improve drainage.

6. Fertilising

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and stop during winter when growth slows.

7. Pruning

  • Prune regularly to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth.
  • Remove yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves at the base to keep the plant healthy and tidy.

8. Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, using a slightly larger pot.
  • For large specimens, top-dress annually by replacing the top layer of soil with fresh mix.

9. Propagation

  • Croton 'Petra' can be propagated through stem cuttings.
  • Take cuttings with at least one node and a few leaves, and root them in water or moist potting soil.

10. Common Problems

  • Leaf Drop: Often caused by sudden changes in temperature, low humidity, or drafts. Ensure stable conditions and adequate moisture.
  • Faded Colours: Indicates insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location with indirect sunlight.
  • Brown Leaf Edges: Typically caused by low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity and adjust watering as needed.

11. Pests

  • Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and scale.
  • Inspect leaves regularly and treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Styling Tips

  • Position the XXL Croton 'Petra' in a bright, prominent location, such as a sunny corner or near a large window, to highlight its vibrant, multicoloured foliage.
  • Use the included 40 cm pot or place it in a decorative planter in neutral tones to complement its dramatic colours.
  • Pair it with plants with contrasting green foliage for a stunning visual effect.
  • Incorporate it into modern or tropical-inspired interiors for a lively, exotic touch.

Benefits of Codiaeum Variegatum 'Petra'

  • Ornamental Appeal: Its multicoloured, glossy leaves bring warmth and vibrancy to any space.
  • Air-Purifying: Improves indoor air quality by filtering toxins.
  • Tropical Aesthetic: Adds an exotic, lush vibe to homes, offices, or conservatories.

The XXL Croton 'Petra' is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a bold, colourful, and easy-to-maintain plant. Its impressive height and striking foliage make it a true statement piece that transforms any interior into a vibrant tropical retreat.

Only “tough” toy my Doberman loves!
Pattern Name: Octopus
Not indestructible, but last a good long while. Definitely worth the money and lasts longer than any other plush toys we’ve had (which is all my dog will play with). It’s for sure my Dobermans favorite, I’ve ordered probably 10 at this point. He gets the stuffing out after a month or two and we open a new one. He’s picky with toys, either destroys them or ignores them, but he never gets bored with his octopus! 🐙 He sneaks one outside once in a while and the neighbor’s dogs steal it. They love it too and thankfully can’t destroy before I retrieve it.

Great for a Pitball
Pattern Name: Octopus
I have a Pitbull and she absolutely loves this toy. I always wait a while before giving a review. She has had this toy Since the beginning of July and she is still playing with this toy. It does have little holes but it is still going. She loves it. Playing tug of war with her. I also take it and wrap it around her collar and watch her dance around trying to get it out(I don't leave it there long). This a great buy. I also bought and extra one so when this one does finally dies she will have another. The material is strong, The sound is about normal for a squeaky toy.

Fun Resilient Chew Toy
Pattern Name: Octopus
I have a boxer/pit mix and she loves this! I bought it 4 months ago and it’s still going strong so I know it’s quality made and perfect for dogs that like to chew and play tug of war. It has been chew resistant for my girl and she loves the little squeak. I just throw it in the washer when I wash her bed. Great value and a safe toy that’s a good size for a medium to large dog.

Not for aggressive chewers
Pattern Name: Octopus, Pattern Name: Octopus
Rating a 3 because the dog loves it, but definitely not "indestructible". Had a tear in one leg the first day and this is 4 days later. Leg is off and stuffing is out. 6 months old, 35 lbs. It was worth a shot. You get what you pay for.
