Hanging Crassula Succulents 🌿
Crassulas are a large genus of succulents. While some grow upright (like the Jade Plant), hanging Crassulas are trailing varieties perfect for hanging pots and shelf edges, where their stems can cascade beautifully.
🌱 Description
Hanging Crassulas have slender, trailing stems covered with small, fleshy leaves that store water.
Depending on the species, the leaves can be:
- Round, triangular, or coin-shaped
- Green, red, or variegated
- Sometimes with a powdery or waxy coating for sun protection
These plants produce tiny star-shaped flowers, usually white or pink, during the growing season.
🌿 Popular Hanging Crassula Varieties
-
Crassula ‘String of Buttons’ (Crassula perforata)
– Stacked triangular leaves along a trailing stem, green with pink edges. -
Crassula rupestris (‘Baby’s Necklace’)
– Small bead-like leaves, grows in a chain-like form, blushes pink in sun. -
Crassula marginalis rubra variegata (‘Calico Kitten’)
– Heart-shaped variegated leaves in pink, cream, and green—very ornamental. -
Crassula pellucida ssp. marginalis
– A delicate trailing type with green leaves and reddish edges. -
Crassula muscosa (‘Watch Chain’)
– Dense, interlocking leaves forming thin chain-like stems. Compact yet cascading.
🌞 Light Requirements
- Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or morning sun.
- Too little light causes stretched, leggy growth.
- Too much harsh sun can burn the leaves (especially variegated types).
💧 Watering
- Water sparingly – allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Overwatering is the most common cause of rot.
- In winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant rests.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal range: 18–28°C (65–82°F)
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold.
- Thrives in normal indoor humidity.
🌸 Soil & Pot
- Use well-draining succulent mix (add perlite or pumice).
- Hanging baskets or shallow pots with drainage holes are ideal.
🌿 Propagation
- Very easy!
Simply take a stem or leaf cutting, let it callous for a day or two, and plant in slightly moist succulent soil. - Roots appear in 1–2 weeks.
🪴 Care Tips
- Rotate occasionally for even sunlight.
- Remove dry leaves from the base.
- Fertilize lightly during spring–summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer.
- Avoid heavy handling of variegated or delicate trailing stems—they’re brittle.
