Germination
To germinate Aquilegia vulgaris 'Blue' seeds, start by preparing a seed starting tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix, like a combination of peat moss and perlite. Moisten the soil evenly, avoiding waterlogging. Since Aquilegia vulgaris 'Blue' seeds have a hard outer coat, they benefit from stratification to break dormancy. Place the seeds in a damp paper towel or a plastic bag filled with moistened vermiculite or sand, and refrigerate them for 3-4 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds evenly over the surface of the soil and gently press them into the soil with your fingertips. Cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil or vermiculite. Place the tray or pots in a cool location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 55-65°F (13-18°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Germination typically occurs within 3-6 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays, or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering, light, and nutrients as they grow into mature Aquilegia vulgaris 'Blue' plants.
