Clerodendrum wallichii, elegantly known as the Chains of Glory, is a breathtaking evergreen shrub native to the Himalayas and Southern Asia. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful flowering plants in the Lamiaceae family, prized for its cascading, pendulous panicles of creamy-white, star-shaped flowers that dangle from dark, glossy foliage.
The contrast between the deep, forest-green lanceolate leaves and the airy, snow-white flower chains makes it a dramatic focal point. In a tropical or subtropical garden, it grows as an upright, slightly arching shrub, reaching its peak beauty in late autumn and winter when the "chains" are in full bloom.
Light
▾Thrives in partial shade or dappled light. In the hot Indian climate, avoid direct afternoon sun as it will wilt the soft leaves and bleach the flower chains. A spot with bright morning sun and afternoon shade is perfect.
Watering
▾Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Chains of Glory have a low tolerance for drought; if the soil dries out completely, the plant will drop its flower buds. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil & Potting
▾Requires a rich, organic, and slightly acidic potting mix. A blend of garden soil, coco-peat, and well-rotted compost works beautifully. If growing in a container, ensure it is large enough to accommodate its vigorous root system.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Feed every 3–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. To encourage heavy flowering in the autumn, switch to a phosphorus-rich "Bloom Booster" fertilizer as the weather begins to cool.
Pruning & Maintenance
▾Prune immediately after the flowering season ends. Since it flowers on new growth, a light trim helps maintain its shape and encourages more branches for next year's "chains." You can also tip-prune young plants to prevent them from becoming too "leggy."
Dropping Flower Buds
▾This is almost always due to water stress or sudden temperature changes. Ensure the soil stays moist and keep the plant away from hot drafts or AC vents.
Yellowing Leaves
▾Can indicate overwatering or a lack of nutrients (specifically iron or magnesium). Check your drainage and ensure you are using a fertilizer with added micronutrients.
