Alocasia 'Polly'

Alocasia 'Polly' is a compact Alocasia with thick, dark green leaves, bright vein definition and sharply scalloped margins. The blades are more oval than those of 'Amazonica', with a dense, sharply defined look in a pot.

This plant is a polyploid mutant discovered by Bill Rotolante in tissue-culture liners of Alocasia 'Amazonica' at Silver Krome Gardens. Its hybrid background traces through Alocasia 'Amazonica', whose parentage is Alocasia sanderiana × Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana'.

Compact scalloped foliage

  • Leaves: Thick, dark green blades with strong pale vein definition.
  • Margins: Pronounced scalloping gives the leaf edge a crisp, sharply cut look.
  • Shape: More oval than the classic V-shaped Alocasia 'Amazonica' leaf.
  • Hybrid background: Polyploid mutant from Alocasia 'Amazonica', whose parentage is Alocasia sanderiana × Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana'.

Small-pot routine for Polly

  • Light: Give bright indirect light, or use a grow light if natural light is weak. Steady light keeps growth firm and leaf definition clear.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has dried and the pot feels lighter. Drain fully so the root zone keeps both moisture and air.
  • Substrate: Use an open aroid mix with bark, coco chips or fibre, perlite, pumice or lava rock, and a small moisture-holding fraction.
  • Pot size: Keep the pot close to the root volume. A container that is too large can hold excess moisture around the rhizome.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm, ideally around 20–28 °C during active growth, and protect the pot from cold windowsills after watering.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps leaves expand cleanly. Air movement is important in cabinets, vitrines and dense plant setups.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly while new leaves are developing. Reduce feeding when growth slows in lower light or cooler conditions.
  • Propagation: Division, offsets or cormels need warmth, gentle moisture and patience until new roots are active.

Margins and roots during decline

  • Soft rhizome: Check for cold, wet substrate and poor drainage. Firm roots and an airy mix matter more than frequent watering.
  • Yellow lower leaves: One older leaf may fade as a new one develops. Several yellowing leaves together usually point to wet roots, low light or stress after moving.
  • Brown edges: Review watering gaps, dry air, fertiliser strength and heat from lamps or radiators.
  • Pest marks: Fine stippling, dull patches or distorted new growth can indicate spider mites or thrips. Check the undersides and petioles closely.

Handling Polly during leaf cleanup

Alocasia 'Polly' is toxic if chewed. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash your hands after pruning, dividing or handling damaged tissue.

Polly, Poly and the Amazonica line

Alocasia is a New Latin name formed in relation to Colocasia. 'Polly' is also seen as 'Poly', a spelling connected with its polyploid origin from tissue-culture liners of Alocasia 'Amazonica'.

Biltong, any brand, is healthier for you than “beef jerky”.
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Ayouba Biltong is soft and full of flavor without excess sugar, preservatives, and spices. Good quality: if you can get it on sale or with an Amazon subscription even better. Sometimes settling occurs and more small “shreds” of it than I’d like, but overall a great, good-tasting product. Per ounce? Hey no Biltong is “cheap”. This isn’t Jack’s Links, etc.

Sour moist meat
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I had a hankering for jerky and found biltong instead. I didn’t know what made it different, but I was willing to try. I was very surprised how moist it was!! It’s better than the jerky here. If I wanted to gnaw on leather then I’d get my belt instead of paying money for dried meat. I liked that it didn’t have sugar. However , the flavor was confusing. It was mostly sour, like too much vinegar. Other reviewers mentioned that too and I must agree. I’m not sure how it’s suppose to taste but this experience makes me hesitate buying any more.

Rancid, Nasty, biltong shavings
Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1), Flavor Name: Traditional, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This Ayoba Biltong has an OK flavour, but the black pepper is excessive. About 20% of the shavings are rancid, which means that every 5 shaving pinch you put in your mouth is practically guaranteed to have a rancid flake. The rancid flakes are bitter. acrid and foul, and this nastiness completely overpowers the biltong flavour, even the excess black pepper taste. I believe the rancidness comes from the white bits of fat attached to the meat, but who wants to sort and clean these biltong bits? DO NOT BUY!!!! FYI - I grew up in Swaziland and Botswana, and ate pounds and pounds of biltong. I even made Biltong while deep in the Okavango Delta.
