Rhapis Excelsa Palm, or Lady Palm, is a great indoor houseplant. The fan-like fronds are a shiny, glossy green when healthy. Rhapis Palms will tolerate lower light than many other palms, making it a good choice for the home or office.
Origin: Southern China & Taiwan
Family: Araceae
Height: 5"-8"
Light: try to keep this palm in bright, indirect light all day. Some early morning sun is fine. In low light, Rhapis Palm will lose inner and lower fronds.
Water: In low to medium light , water when the potting soil has dried almost completely to the bottom. In a bright light placement, water when the potting media has dried down about 1/2 of its total depth. Do not allow Rhapis Palm to wilt, it will not recover well.
Humidity: Mist the leaves several times a week with a spray bottle. Mist your plant more frequently in the summer growing season- the more water you can supply the blooms, the healthier it will be.
Temperature: Growth may cease completely below 70 F, but will resume when warmer weather returns. In winter, Rhapis plants need a 6 week rest period at a with little water. This allows the plant to flower profusely again in the following season.
Soil: Any good potting mix that drains well (acidic is preferred). Soil density should be firm and allow water to slowly filter through.
Fertilizer: Rhapis are relatively slow-growing plants and need very little fertilizer. Leaf color is one of the best guide:
- Rich green indicates fertilizer levels are adequate
- Slight overall yellowish color may mean the to apply nutrients
Eliminates: Their large, dark leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene and xylene
