White calla lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica)! We all know them for their cut flowers, but did you realize they are also a perennial in most of the South? I’ll be honest, I haven’t found many of them growing in abandoned pastures; abandoned pastures seem to be the home for the daffodils and some of their other friends. No, I’ve seen calla lilies growing in the old established gardens of the south that are still taken care of. Why? Normally it is because calla lilies need more water than just the natural rainfall they might receive in a field.

How much water? A lot. Calla lilies are traditionally grown completely submerged in the water. A typical technique is to pot a very rocky soil mixture together in a pot, and sink the pot completely under the water in a fish pond or other decorative pool of water. However, they don’t have to be completely submerged. A regular irrigation system will take care of them. They like it a little more shady and damp, so just remember that when placing them in the garden.

Here at the Southern Bulb Company farm, we’re going to put them with our white rain lilies (Zephyranthes candida) and our native white spider lilies (Hymenocallis liriosme) in the thick clays at the edge of our pond. This will accomplish a couple of things. First, it will keep them in the moist soils they need to thrive. Second, the water helps keep the soil temperatures above freezing, and calla lilies can be sensitive to freezing. Our farm is located in northeast Texas, almost a Zone 7, and I would not recommend trying this bulb north of here.

What about the history of the bulb? While I would like to offer a great pass-a-long story like so many of our other bulbs have, all I can speak to is the wonderful old places I’ve seen them grow. Many of our old world bulbs like the little jonquil sweeties, old fashioned daffodils, Byzantine gladioli, and more came from Mediterranean places such as the south of Spain. Calla lilies come to us from South Africa, not a hot bed of early American immigration. From there though, they were eventually brought to Europe and the United States. Dr. Bill Welch had them in his old home near Monroe, LA for generations and now has them growing in a decorative galvanized feeding trough near Brenham, TX (the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream). I’ve also seen them all over the Island of Jersey, particularly in the fabulous garden of Mrs. Lea where her pond leads up to her famous trompe l’oeil, which I wrote about on the Bulb Hunter Blog here: http://www.bulbhunter.com/2007/07/12/the-isle-of-jersey/.

That should be enough description to get you going. We hope you enjoy and are anxious to put these bulbs into your hands! Don’t worry, they’re quick to multiply!

Birds seem to love it!
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 2), Style: 16 Fl Oz Concentrate (Pack of 2)
I grew up using homemade hummingbird food dyed a bright red color with koolaid or food dye. But for the first time in my adult life, I'm somewhere that has a lot of hummingbirds and I wanted to provide them with the best juice possible. I decided on this juice because I like that it has hummingbird friendly electrolytes and is in a concentrate so I can make my own preferred dilution. I am in a very hot desert climate so I've been doing a 1-3/3.5 ratio to help keep them extra hydrated and the hummingbirds and bees are loving it. We have four feeders. Two closer to the ground and two on our second floor balcony. The birds and bees have been visiting all four regularly and our cats are loving the show. I swear my youngest cat gets most excited about the bees. I know the bees are seen as problematic for most but the birds don't seem to mind them sharing a few feeding holes and we don't mind feeding the bees too. The bees are probably more important for our ecosystem than the birds anyway. I took away one star because the seals on the bottles aren't very strong and both had leaked during transit, one was very messy and crusted with dried sugar. Since these are technically supposed to be refrigerated after opening I probably should have returned them but upon reading the ingredients, I don't see a reason that they would have gone bad without showing obvious signs of spoilage. It's basically gatorade for birds. I even took a sip to see if I died. I was fine so figured it's fine for the birds too. If the next order is also leaking I'll consider going elsewhere but for now we have happy birds, bees and cats.

They keep coming back for more ..........
Size: 64 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: 64 oz Ready To Use
I've only been using this food for two weeks, but the hummingbirds love it so far. From what I've read, they are attracted to the color of the feeder more so than the smell of the nectar / food itself. With the amount of work that hummingbirds have to go through just to find enough food to survive, I figure it is worth the extra cost of this food compared to making plain sugar water that does not have the added minerals and electrolytes that this feed has to mimic real nectar.

Great product
Size: 64 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: 64 oz Ready To Use
I bought this same product last year for my hummingbirds and it brings them into the feeder. So, as of today I have already seen a steady increase in the hummingbirds. 💕

Quickly accepted by our local hummingbirds.
Size: 64 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: 64 oz Ready To Use
I used this in a red hanging hummingbird feeder on a second-floor shaded balcony. The feeder had only been up a short time, and the nectar was accepted quickly. I observed hummingbirds visiting, perching, and drinking from the active lower tiers, so the product clearly did not discourage feeding. What I like most is the convenience. It is ready to pour, clear, and does not require mixing sugar and water. I also appreciate that it is not dyed red. The feeder itself provides enough red visual attraction, so colored liquid is not necessary. For a small balcony feeder, I only needed to fill the reservoirs about halfway, which helped keep the nectar fresh and reduced waste. A few practical notes: I still treat this like any hummingbird nectar and replace it regularly rather than letting it sit for many days. Even in shaded, mild weather, I would rather keep the feeder clean and fresh. The bottle should also be stored properly after opening. Overall, this is a good option if you want a simple ready-to-use nectar without mixing your own. Homemade sugar water is cheaper, but this is convenient, clean-looking, and in my case the hummingbirds used it. I would recommend it for someone who wants an easy pour-and-fill option, especially for a smaller feeder or balcony setup.

Easy to use. Stays sealed. Stays charged.
Size: 12 Combo Travel Size
I had previously bought packing bags in a store — the kind the you had to seal and then roll/squish the air out of one end of the bag. It really took 2 people to remove most of the air. I took them to Mexico, and they were just OK. I switched to these vacuum bags before our family ski trip. What a great purchase! This set includes multiple sizes, which worked well for both everyday clothes and bulkier cold-weather gear. They also fit well inside different size suitcases. One tip: Fill the bag, seal it shut, squish some air out, but then suck the final air out with the bag already inside your suitcase. You can "massage" the clothes and guide how the bag flattens out for a really efficient use of your suitcase space. The organization you can achieve is really impressive. The bag material and valve is tough enough to not allow any air leaks. The red "glides" they provide make sure the seal is solid and easy to achieve. And the system is simple enough that I suspect that elementary kids or people with lower dexterity could operate it (my teens certainly had no issues packing themselves). After returning home, I folded all the bag along their original fold lines, charged up the "sucky thing" (which still held 75% of it's charge after being used at least 20 times), and tucked it all neatly in our travel drawer, ready for our international trip next month. Great value. High quality. I'd even go so far as to say they're fun to use.
