Named by Werner Rauh in 1984 to honor German taxonomists Klaus and Renate Ehlers, Tillandsia ehlersiana is a captivating member of the Tillandsia subgenus. This remarkable airplant, found growing as a saxicole in the near woodland areas of Chiapas, Mexico, at elevations of 500-900 meters, challenges traditional Tillandsia growth patterns.

Key features:

  • True pseudobulbous form with large, ovoid sheaths
  • Dense covering of cinereous trichomes giving a striking silvery-gray appearance
  • Strongly recurved, attenuated blades create a dramatic silhouette
  • Unique lithophytic growth habit, thriving on steep granitic rock faces

The image showcases T. ehlersiana's extraordinary form, with a mass of slender, arching leaves radiating from a central pseudobulb. The leaves appear to dance and intertwine, creating a living sculpture that seems to defy gravity. Delicate pink flowers emerge from carmine inflorescences, adding a touch of color to the predominantly silvery-green form. The dense covering of trichomes gives the plant an almost ethereal, frosted appearance.

Collector's note: T. ehlersiana holds a special place in Tillandsia history. Initially misidentified as Tillandsia beutelspacheri in the 1970s, it wasn't until its official description that this unique species gained rightful recognition. Its bizarre shape and striking appearance make it a coveted addition to any serious Tillandsia collection.

Care tips:

  • Provide bright light and warm conditions
  • Water sparingly, allowing to dry completely between waterings
  • Excellent air circulation is crucial to prevent rot
  • Handle with care as leaves are brittle and stiff

Ideal for:

  • Collectors seeking rare and visually striking Tillandsias
  • Enthusiasts interested in species with unique growth habits
  • Creating dramatic lithophytic displays

Display recommendation: Mount T. ehlersiana on a piece of granite or rough-textured rock to mimic its natural habitat. This will showcase its unique growth habit and create a stunning, naturalistic display that highlights its silvery beauty against the stone backdrop.

Embrace the allure of T. ehlersiana—a living testament to nature's ability to thrive in the most unexpected places. Its striking form, with polystichous spikes more inflated than those of many other species and indigo corollas, makes it a true conversation piece, bridging the gap between botanical curiosity and living art.

Building Web-sites for Dummies
Format: Kindle
The Dummies series of how to books is an amazing resource for those of us who are not professionals in any number of fields.. Whenever I want to do something (and learn to do it well) I head for these books.. and I buy all my books through Amazon These are invaluable books and not for Dummies at all.. but as a paralegal ~ I am not a web designer and I am not an accountant ~ I am not lots of things. But, if you can read, you can do. Great books. Buy them for what you don't know but what to do,

Not what I expected to be a website app builder!
Format: Paperback
Nearly 800 pages to look through. It is great for getting started but to write code and input it to have website function, a website app is needed. I can pay someone $800 complete and not have to buy an app for building websites!

This book is aimed directly at professional web designers and is build around Adobe CS6. It can be helpful, but...
Format: Paperback
Preface - I have a lot of experience making webpages and sites, but my experience is very dated (I haven't played with actual web programming in more than a decade). Many things have changed since I was building websites - including the standardization of HTML 5 and the widespread use of CSS. Since I am rebuilding a number of personal webpages - as well as my commercial site - my wife bought me this book to help me catch up on the new technology. Pluses - 1) The book does a really good job of giving a decent overview of the new technologies I need to learn. Like most "Dummies" books, it is easy to read and follow the instructions and information. 2) The book is aimed at actual web designers and while I am not a professional designer, the tips and tricks laid out in this book are very helpful. 3) I am not sure that someone completely new to website construction would get as much out of it as I did - there are a lot of assumptions made by the author about the reader's grasp of certain web technologies. That said, I think someone new to web design could probably still figure out what is being said. Negatives - 1) This book is aimed at someone looking to become a professional web designer. It is NOT a low level book and covers many things that a personal website designer is not likely to need. Given the fairly low price of the book, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't presented that way in the advertisements for the book. 2 (and this is the biggie...) The book is built around using a VERY expensive piece of software - Adobe Creative Suite cs6. This software runs ~$1,000. This makes sense if you are trying to become a professional web designer, but for someone at home just doing a website for themselves, it is WAY out of most people's price range. You don't need that software to learn the lessons in the book, but it is heavily slanted for that piece of software. Most of the screenshots are aimed at the Adobe software. I am using a fairly decent piece of software, but I will need to get a book on that particular software to try to do some of the things the book talks about. I found the book helpful, but flawed for anyone NOT getting into professional web design.
