The stony, long-lasting grains are easy to apply evenly and provide sustained nutrients during the growing season.
In most cases, plants don't strictly require fertilizer, but you'll find that they grow more rapidly and bloom better if you apply a quality fertilizer according to the rate recommended on the package. Reblooming shrubs, like lilacs, azaleas, and hydrangeas, especially benefit from being fertilized in early spring, then again around their first bloom of the season.
