Alocasia gagaena can be identified by its connected leaf blade at the base of the leaf.
Position yours outdoors in summer and keep moist and well fed for the best results. These warmth lovers slow right down over winter in order to burst with fast new growth during the warmer months.
Ideal for intermediate plant keepers or beyond
Light Requirements: Part-day direct sun or bright indirect light. These are best in rooms with 2 or 3 walls with glass and positioned right by a window.
Moisture & Soil Requirements: Must have evenly moist soil with good drainage in warm seasons - never soggy soil. Dial back watering frequency in winter unless you have dry air inside from heat sources. Mist during dry periods. Let this plant partly dry out between watering, the top 5cm or so can be dry before requiring water. If in doubt, use a moisture metre.
Growth & Nutrients: Clumping growth habit, grows upwards in a large V shape. Can handle dry spells. Suits patios and outdoor containers, ideal coastal plant, best suited to warm frost-free areas. Aggressive root system so keep this plant away from water pipes. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser for containers from the start of spring each year to autumn when growth slows down.
Temperature, Humidity & Ambient requirements: Prefers warm environments outside, avoid soggy soils, prefers evenly moist soil.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets and people.
