Yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) is a majestic tree that can grow between 15 and 25 metres tall, known for its smooth, shiny bark that ranges in colour from golden yellow to brown. It is the only birch species that can grow in shade, making it an ideal choice for dense forests and shaded areas. Yellow birch thrives in cool soils, particularly near streams where there is abundant moisture. While young trees have smooth bark, it curls and peels with age, revealing beautiful tones of golden gray. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, yellow birch is also the official tree emblem of the province of Quebec, symbolizing the beauty and richness of Quebec's forests.
Furthermore, birches (Betula spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a wide variety of insects and birds that rely on their leaves, bark, and seeds.
Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The young leaves are edible and can be eaten raw in salads or infused to make teas. The sap is also edible and can be reduced into syrup, though it contains less sugar than maple sap.
Ecological Role
Yellow birch plays a key role in forest ecosystems, providing habitat and food for numerous birds and small mammals. Its leaves are a food source for larvae of various insects, while its bark and branches offer shelter to wildlife. As a pioneer species, it also contributes to the establishment of vegetation in disturbed areas, helping ecosystems recover and thrive.
Yellow birch seeds require cold stratification to ensure germination. See the growing notes below for more details.
