Are you on the hunt for a unique and eye-catching plant to add to your collection? Look no further than the brittle prickly pear cactus or little prickly pear, also known as Opuntia fragilis or fragile cactus, a vibrant member of the Opuntia genus. This striking plant displays vibrant orange, red, or yellow-green flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, making it a true showstopper in any garden. There are few flowers on each brittle prickly pear, and many plants do not flower every year.

What makes this cactus truly unique is its loose connection of pads; they're easily detached by passing animals, which helps in propagation. And get this: new pads grow out of the top of the brittle prickly pear cactus, causing it to bend over like a little green waterfall!

Hailing from North America and reaching a height of 12 inches, it is noticeably thicker than other species (24 inches) at maturity. The prickly pear cactus, which is often cylindrical or potato-shaped with spines concentrated at the upper edge, is sure to make a statement wherever it's planted.  However, it's important to note that this plant is mildly toxic for both humans and pets, so handle it with caution!

Plus, where new pads touch the soil, roots form and grow into new colonies! Talk about self-sufficiency! So, if you want a plant that can take care of itself while adding some cute desert vibes to your home, look no further than the Brittle Prickly Pear, 'Opuntia fragilis'.

Watering Needs

Many cacti, like Opuntia fragilis, thrive when cared for properly by using the "soak and dry" technique. This involves giving your plant a generous watering, followed by allowing it to completely dry out before watering again.

For potted and outdoor Opuntia, during the growing season, it's recommended to give them a deep-water soak once or twice a month when the soil is dry. Use a water meter or place your finger into the soil, and if it is dry an inch down, then you should water your plant.  Make sure that you are also using porous sandy soil, and if it is in a pot, then make sure there is a drainage hole to avoid overwatering. In rainy seasons or cold weather, it's best to withhold watering your outdoor cacti.

Light Requirements

Opuntia fragilis prefers bright, direct sunlight and can tolerate full sun exposure for most of the day. When grown indoors or in low-light environments, the plant may not receive enough light to thrive and may become leggy or pale in color.

If you are growing Opuntia fragilis indoors, it is important to place it in a south-facing window or under grow lights to provide it with adequate light. If growing outdoors, it can be grown in a variety of locations, including rock gardens, xeriscapes, and containers, as long as it receives enough sunlight to support healthy growth.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Are you ready to take your Opuntia fragilis cacti plant game to the next level?  When it comes to choosing the right soil and fertilizer for your adorable prickly pear cacti, you need to be extra cautious and use the right kind of soil.  Moisture can be a real killer, leading to root and stem rot in no time. But fear not, my fellow green thumbs! Planet Desert has got your back with our specialized cactus potting mix that includes organic mycorrhizae, perfect for promoting healthy roots and happy plants.

When it comes to fertilizing your cactus plant, it only needs a small amount of fertilizer applied once a year in the spring. Cacti prefer fertilizer with lower doses of NPK, with a maximum ratio of 5-10-5 that is higher in phosphorus than nitrogen.

Hardiness Zones & More

Opuntia fragilis requires sunny, warm climates to thrive, but it can tolerate mild cold temperatures. Generally, these are hardy plants that can be grown in the garden in USDA zones 4–10, and it is a great houseplant for beginners as it will be fine if you forget to water it for a while.

These tropical cacti tend to live for many years and grow slowly. Plant them in the spring after the weather warms up.

Be sure to add Opuntia fragilis to your collection today and elevate the beauty of your home or garden with this stunning plant.

I just finished reading Part One and can safely say that I was not at all disappointed. Reading this story felt like being welcomed home ...
Format: Paperback
To say that I was excited for this comic to be released is an understatement. I was waiting all day for it to be delivered and immediately ripped the package open once I got my hands on it. I just finished reading Part One and can safely say that I was not at all disappointed. Reading this story felt like being welcomed home into a world that I grew up in. I started watching the Avatar series when it first aired when I was nine years old. I grew up with those younger characters in ATLA and then spent my teenage years alongside the characters of The Legend of Korra. I was figuring myself out at the same time that Korra was. The finale when Korra and Asami got together came at the perfect time for me as I was still wrestling with my attraction towards multiple genders, especially to women, so to see two female characters (both of whom are also women of color) find comfort in one another and embark on a romantic journey together was everything to me. This comic continued from that point beautifully. We see the infamous Korrasami vacation and it is absolutely stunning. The artwork in this comic jumps of the page. It fits in wonderfully with that of the animated series while still maintaining its own identity. The story itself acts as a set-up for what's to come, but we got another layer of world-building for this wonderful universe and the characters are still the people I remember from the end of the series. I adore every bit of it.

The best ever continuation of the TV show!
Format: Kindle
'Ultimately, your story is yours to tell. You'll know when the time is right to share the news.' THIS VOLUME IS BASICALLY HERE'S A BI, THERE'S A BI, EVERYWHERE'S A BI AND I'M LIVING FOR IT. I been knew Kya is gay but Avatar Kyoshi being bi is too good of a reveal, ahhhh (also, so much more excited to read The Rise of Kyoshi now). The best part is how it starts right where the show ends like this is what dreams are made of and then the juxtaposition of Korrasami becoming a couple and whatever is now happening in the Republic City is done so well like, they definitely nailed the pace and I was into all of it. The nuances of Korrasami coming out to their family and friends (Mako's reaction, though LOL PERFECT), what different nations think about queer relationships and whether Korrasami want to reveal it to the public just yet, so many feels. I just want to yell about Korrasami in love, though. I'm crying. 😭😭 THEIR CONFESSIONS FREAKING SLAYED ME. Korra feeling like she was always too intense (one of the things I love about her, LBR) but now feels like she doesn't have to hold herself back in front of Asami. 😭😭 VULNERABLE KORRA IS FREAKING PRECIOUS AND NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS. By the way, shoutout to Lin Beifong being the badass-est of all. Besides Korra, she's easily my favorite. As for the art, it's fantastic! Irene Koh definitely channeled the original art but she also brought her own style into it and the result is great. It honestly felt like I was watching the show since it was so easy to give voices to characters' dialogues and to follow the action sequences (which translate so well in this form !!).

Gorgeous art, story, and romance
Format: Paperback
This book is a must-read for any fan of The Legend of Korra! Irene Koh's art is absolutely gorgeous (I would literally pay for her to just paint page after page in the spirit world), and Michael Dante DiMartino's writing is as strong as ever. The LGBT representation is so important and woven seamlessly into the plot and character arcs; I'm so glad that the comics can go to a place that the television show could only ever hint at. I've read this book several times already and I get new joy every time.

DEAL WITH IT.
Format: Paperback
Just arrived and I'm freaking out. Loved every minute of the series and I'm so glad it continues in comic form. I can't wait to read through this. KORRASAMI FOR THE WIN!!! Update: Aug 9th. Finished it in record time HAHA. Wonderfully drawn and written, felt like a true direct continuation of the series. I believe they did a wonderful job delving deeper into Korra and Asami relationship and where it truly developed from, giving more context to the series and especially does a good job addressing many unanswered questions of how the world of the Avatar looks at it's LGBTQ community and im not surprised to discover that it is not so different from our own. The new villain didn't feel as fleshed out as it could have been, but we have 2 more issues coming, so I'm confident it will be explored well. Wonderful too see Bolin and Mako working as a team again. Overall I give Turf Wars part 1, 4.5 stars, its a wonderful read, especially if your a fan of the series, hope I did t spoil to much for you 😁

I absolutely LOVED! The legend of Korra, A must buy for any Legend of Korra Fans.
Format: Paperback
I absolutely LOVED! The legend of Korra and when the animated series came to an end I was very sad but then I heard about these books I was over joyed. If you enjoyed the series buy the book its a great read I spend a lot of time reading manga and the artwork is beautifully drawn the moments between Korra and Asami are drawn so tenderly it's lovely. It was incredibly brave of the creators of the show to end it they way they did it meant a lot to many people around the world the relationship was developed slowly and I am glad they did it that way the show made history and is continuing to break barriers its so different from the usual Disney mindset which we all need to break out of. Cannot wait to see how they continue to develop the story and more of Korra and Asami's relationship developments, I really feel like Asami keeps Korra balanced if you watch the show and read the book I think you will see what I mean, Already signed up for book 2 when it comes out so excited I will continue to support the show which has brought me and many other people so much joy.
