The last thing to bloom in fall. The first medicine from the forest.

Hamamelis virginiana, the American Witch Hazel, blooms in November and December after every other tree has dropped its leaves, producing clusters of spidery, fragrant yellow flowers on bare stems at the exact moment when the rest of the landscape has surrendered to dormancy. It is the only woody plant in eastern North America that blooms in late fall, making it one of the most extraordinary and unexpected ornamental shrubs available to the temperate gardener. It is also the source of witch hazel extract, one of the oldest and most widely used botanical medicines in North America, present in medicine cabinets from colonial times to the present day. If you are looking to buy Witch Hazel seeds or grow this native shrub from seed, this is a plant that surprises everyone who encounters it blooming in November.

  • The only woody plant in eastern North America that blooms in late fall and early winter on bare stems
  • Spidery yellow flowers with a sweet, faintly spicy fragrance appearing after all other trees go dormant
  • The original source of witch hazel extract, one of the oldest botanical medicines in North America
  • Native to the eastern United States, adaptable to shade, sun, wet, and dry sites
  • Brilliant yellow and orange fall foliage before the late-season blooms emerge

Things you probably did not know about the American Witch Hazel

The seeds are ejected ballistically up to 30 feet from the parent plant. When Witch Hazel seed capsules dry and contract in late fall, they build tension that is released explosively, launching seeds at speeds measured at over 30 feet per second. The seeds can travel 30 to 40 feet from the parent plant in a single ejection. This ballistic dispersal mechanism has been studied by mechanical engineers for its elegant natural spring design.

The witch in the name has nothing to do with witchcraft. The name derives from the Old English word wiche or wych, meaning flexible or pliant, describing the bendable quality of the branches. This same root gives us the wych elm of Britain. The name was applied to the American plant by early settlers who recognized the flexible branches as similar to Old World witch trees used for water dowsing, but the word itself is botanical, not supernatural.

Witch hazel extract has been in continuous commercial production since 1866. The Dickinson Company began steam-distilling Witch Hazel extract in Essex, Connecticut in 1866 and has been producing it continuously ever since from wild-harvested and cultivated Hamamelis virginiana. It is one of the longest-running commercially produced botanical medicines in American history and remains a standard ingredient in astringent skin products, aftershaves, and hemorrhoid treatments.

It blooms while carrying fruit from last year's flowers. American Witch Hazel takes a full year for its fruit to ripen after flowering. When the new November flowers open, the capsules from the previous year's flowering are simultaneously ripening and preparing to eject their seeds. A single branch in fall carries flowers, ripening seed capsules, and the leafless architecture of the shrub all at once.

Perfect Mug Warmer
Color: Black
I bought this to replace one I'd had for more than 25 years & I'm glad I got this one. Keeps my hot drinks hot for hours & will shut off after that. Quickly heats back up when needed. Very sleek looking. Easy to set up. Just take it out of the box & plug it in.

I love it for my workspace! Hot tea all day
Color: Wood Grain
I love this item. The size is perfect, as I prefer something less bulky for my work desktop. It isn't as fancy as others that has the digital display screen, which is fine by me, because I don't necessarily need that. The knob and different colors that indicate the temperature range works fine. The temperature on this thing works fantastically well for me. Using it on the lowest setting keeps my drink nice and hot in a cold office. I use a heatproof glass teapot with this and its a good fit. It keeps my tea hot throughout the day, so I am able to pour smaller amounts of drink and take my time sipping it throughout the day without worrying that it will get cold. At point I almost forgot that it has an automatic shut-off safety feature when I noticed it was off. So that is a good feature to have. I highly recommend this.

Requires a very specific mug to be useful.
Color: Black
The hotplate itself gets hot enough on its highest setting where it would burn your finger if you left it one there for more then a couple seconds. However when it come to what mug you can use to transfer that heat to your drink, this WILL NOT work with just any old ceramic, metal or glass mugs. You absolutely need to have a perfectly flat bottom on it. If the center of the bottom of the mug does not make direct contact with the very center of the warmer, it will not transfer heat. So straight way plan of spending another $15 to $20. Amazon has some available with good reviews all be it not a very big selection. I'm giving this 4 stars because the description needs to be very clear about this and its not.

Great mug warmer with temp control
Color: Black
I replaced a cheap mug warmer with a couple of these for the house, and for almost the same price this is a lot more functional. I really like the temperature control and silicone surface protector. In combination with the carafe below, this has changed my life - no more microwaving coffee all morning. https://www.amazon.com/GiNT-Stainless-Thermal-Thermos-Retention/dp/B07MW5N7MS

Super Satisfied Customer Here!
Color: Gold, Color: Gold
I purchased the gold/black mug warmer. I always spend a good about of money for great coffee products and I take my time to perfect my coffee for my mornings at work. However, I get pulled into urgent meetings and just something urgent and I always leave more than half of my coffee behind. When I come back it’s cold and that’s very disappointing considering the money and time I spent to make it bc I then have to toss it. I don’t believe in microwaves and I refuse to use one. When I found this, I was super excited! It looks perfect at my desk and it works perfect! I would have liked it to be more on the brass gold like my pen holder, but it’s just as pretty! As you can see, my mug had a layer on the bottom and that made me think it may not work well, but it did the job. My coffee was super warm and it got even hotter as I left it there tearing it. I turned it one before making my coffee, so I’m not sure exactly how long it took to warm up but for me, by the time I got back, it was the peg temperature. I highly recommend this to anyone who has the same struggles. No more cold coffees! Thank you!!!
