Piper sp. Sumatera 'Pink Veins' – Rare Piper with Dark Leaves and Vivid Pink Venation

Piper sp. Sumatera 'Pink Veins' is an eye-catching foliage Piper from Indonesia, admired for its jet-dark leaf surface and striking pink venation. Among Piper cultivars, this is one of the most ornamental, standing out with its high-contrast look and bold coloration.

Why Piper sp. Sumatera 'Pink Veins' stands out

  • Unique venation: bright pink primary and secondary veins against a nearly black background.
  • Foliage form: ovate-lanceolate leaves with a leathery texture and defined midrib.
  • Collector appeal: far rarer than patterned Piper species commonly found in cultivation.
  • Decorative value: works as a statement plant in both climbing and shrubby growth forms.

Natural background

Though its exact taxonomy remains unresolved, this plant originates from Sumatra, Indonesia. Like many Piper species, it grows in tropical lowland forests as a climbing understory plant, thriving in filtered light, high humidity, and consistently moist but well-draining soils.

Care essentials for Piper sp. Sumatera 'Pink Veins'

  • Light: bright, indirect exposure preserves the vivid pink vein color; avoid direct midday sun.
  • Temperature: prefers 20 – 28 °C; do not expose to drops below 15 °C.
  • Humidity: high humidity (65 – 85%) enhances healthy leaf expansion and color saturation.
  • Water: keep evenly moist; let the top 2 – 3 cm of substrate dry slightly before watering again.
  • Substrate: loose and airy mix such as bark, coco coir, perlite, and charcoal for drainage and oxygenation.
  • Fertilizer: balanced liquid feed at low strength during active growth to support leaf production and color.
  • Support: appreciates a slim climbing aid to show off larger leaves.
  • Semi-hydro: adapts well to mineral or semi-hydro substrates if moisture is consistent.

Common grower issues

  • Vein color fading: often caused by insufficient light or weak feeding; increase filtered brightness and feed consistently.
  • Brown leaf edges: usually a sign of low humidity or drought stress; improve environment and shorten dry cycles.
  • Yellow patches: linked to overwatering or cold roots; ensure drainage and stable warmth.
  • Pest risk: monitor for thrips or mites on undersides and midrib; treat promptly with IPM methods if seen.

Additional collector notes

  • Identification: unmistakable due to deep pink venation over dark foliage.
  • Growth habit: scandent, with the potential to climb or trail depending on support.
  • Rarity: seldom encountered outside specialist collections or small-batch exports.
  • Toxicity: not confirmed pet-safe; avoid access for pets and children.

Etymology

Genus:Piper comes from Latin piper, derived from Ancient Greek πέπερι (péperi, “pepper”), which in turn originates from Sanskrit पिप्पलि (pippali, long pepper).Species group: this Sumatra form is not formally published as a species but circulated under the trade name 'Pink Veins'.

Propagation and size

  • Propagation: stem cuttings root reliably in humid, warm conditions.
  • Medium: fine bark with perlite or semi-hydro setup encourages healthy rooting.
  • Size indoors: 40 – 70 cm typical height with support; leaves reach 10 – 15 cm.

Softest diaper ever.
Size: Size 1, Unit Count: 44
I’ve tried almost every brand on the market. I finally settled on these, and they are worth every penny. Here’s why they stand out: Absorbency: These are incredible for overnight. No leaks no late night changes Material & Feel: They are incredibly soft—almost like cloth. If your baby has sensitive skin or is prone to redness, the breathable material makes a huge difference. Fit: The leg cuffs are stretchy but secure. They dont leave that deep red marks that cheaper diapers do. Wetness Indicator: The line is clear and easy to see, even through a onesie. I bought a size 1 for my 9lb baby and it fits perfectly.

Best diaper
Size: Size 5, Unit Count: 84
The only diaper band we ever buy. We’ve never had any blowouts because of it. It’s easy to use and hold up a lot. It’s really soft and doesn’t give any rashes. The material is great. Doesn’t really stop odor not that I expected it.

Finally, a good night's sleep.
For almost a year, I've had sleep issues. No problem falling asleep, but I'd wake up 3 hours later and be up for the next 2-3 hours. I'd finally fall back asleep just a bit before the alarm and spend the rest of the day in a fog. It didn't matter whether I went to bed at 8:30 pm or 11pm - I was still up by 1:30-2 and awake for hours. It gradually got worse and I got desperate. A friend recommended Melatonin and I resisted at first, having tried it after our daughter was born (almost 15 years ago). The tablets I took then had some odd side effects and I only took them for a few weeks before throwing the bottle away. Now, I think I have have been taking far too high of a dose, because these 3mg tablets work great. Be careful when you take them! I'm awake and alert for about 20 minutes and then zone out totally - even in the middle of a conversation. After a couple of months, I've learned to just lay a tablet on my nightstand and take it when I'm ready to turn out the light. It works great: cured the problem of middle of the night sleeplessness. I still wake up sometimes at night, but have no trouble dropping back off to sleep. And when I wake up in the morning, I'm alert, energetic, and not already counting the hours until I can go back to bed to get a good night's sleep. For me, this supplement would have been a good buy at twice the price - and my family agrees. I'm rested, cheerful, and so happy I gave it a try. So far, no bad side effects. In fact, no side effects at all. I am taking it daily, but considering trying it on a more limited basis because of concerns about long-term effects. Considering, but haven't done it yet because I'm so enjoying a good night's sleep that I'm afraid to tinker with success! Although I saw results the very first night I took this, I waited to write a review just in case it was a placebo effect at work. But it's been 11 weeks and I'm confident that this product is really effective for me.

Time release.. ONLY way to go
Used this brand before... when refill needed, came back for more. Time release is the best way to go as it works all night. Not one big hit when you 1st go to sleep... A nice "hit"... to get you to sleep and then a slow release of the rest, to KEEP you asleep... Don't think you'll be disappointed. I use sustained release with any vitamin/supplement I take (assuming the company makes it) .. including this. It's the best way to allow your body to utilize the product.

A subtle sleep enhancer.
Melatonin, in my experience, is a very subtle drug. I took it for about a month and then stopped before I actually saw what it was doing. It allowed me to fall asleep quicker and when I woke up during the night, to fall back asleep quicker as well. No more tossing and turning. I prefer the timed release version since I tend to sleep about 4-5 hours straight and then wake up sporadically after that. I had been buying the timed release from GNC but this brand is much cheaper, more pills, and just as effective. I've also tried popping another one after that initial 4-5 stretch of sleep to further prolong sleepy time, but I don't know how effective that is. It doesn't put you to sleep, so there's no grogginess when you wake up. It just jump starts the natural process.
