Columbine flowers are some of my favourite for their absolute perfect beauty. This variety is a deep purple and blooms early in the summer. Very nice delicate foliage that keeps green long after the blooms are gone.

Aquilegia is a hardy perennial known commonly as Columbine. The genus includes 60-70 species, including many that are native to Canadian woodlands and forests. They are best known for the exceptionally deep nectar-bearing spurs that jut backwards from each flower. These are enjoyed by moths, bumblebee, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Continue reading below for some top tips on how to grow Columbine from seed.

Latin
Aquilegia vulgaris
Family: Ranunculaceae

Difficulty
Easy

Season & Zone
Exposure: Partial shade – full sun is tolerated where summers are cool
Zone: Hardy to Zone 3

Timing
Direct sow in autumn or mid-winter. Seeds can be started indoors, but it’s more complicated: Sow seeds in flats of moistened, sterilized seed starting mix, and place these inside plastic bags in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks. Then sink the flats outdoors in the ground in a shady spot, and cover with glass. As seedlings appear, transplant them or pot them on. Germination takes 30-90 days.

Starting
Sow on the soil surface and transplant or thin seedlings to 30-50cm (12-20″) apart.

Growing
Seedlings are easy to move, but delicate. Keep them out of strong sunlight, and water frequently, but gently. Deadhead regularly to prolong the blooming period. Columbine’s flowers are followed by distinctive seed pods that open on their own when the seeds are ripe. These can be removed to prevent self sowing, or for very easy harvest of the seeds. We like to harvest Columbine seeds mid-summer and spread them in any shady spot that could use some colour. Grow Columbine in humus-rich, moist, but well-drained soil.

Excellent germination rate. Tested yearly. I usually get around 95% rate. Each package has approximately 40 seeds.

Spendy but delicious. Helps with your teeth, so I highly recommend it.
Flavor Name: Watermelon, Size: 150 Count (Pack of 1)
Flavor is excellent, really tastes like watermelon. I wind up eating about four at a time, so it doesn't go real far, but I like it. I'll keep buying it because I love the taste. It's good for your teeth because of the xlitol. BUT don't let your dog find it. It can kill a dog, the xylitol. So keep it high up where your dog can't get to and wrap it before putting it in the basket so your dog can't get to it. No sugar, so safe for diabetics! High quality, nice packaging. Highly recommended, just keep your dog safe. If you take your dog in the car, don't take this in the car.

Not a fan of this flavor
Flavor Name: Watermelon, Size: 50 Count (Pack of 1)
I am not a fan of this brand of gum. I have purchased in the past Watermelon by Pur unfortunately they don't make that anymore so I tried this one. I personally do not like the taste.

Just what I was looking for: Informative, clear, and concise
Format: Paperback
I've been looking for ways to learn about first aid beyond the basics of CPR and Stop the Bleed. This book is the best resource I've found so far. It is well organized, clearly written, and a pleasure to read.
