Sedum spurium 'Voodoo': Deep Colour, Lasting Heat

Smouldering with bold foliage and vibrant blooms, Sedum 'Voodoo' brings a dramatic edge to the groundcover palette. Its rich, mahogany-red leaves form a dense, spreading mat that holds colour throughout the season, intensifying in cooler weather. Clusters of deep rose-pink star flowers appear in midsummer, lighting up the foliage and attracting a flurry of pollinators. Tough and drought tolerant, this cultivar delivers bold beauty and low-maintenance performance in sunny, dry garden spaces.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Height: 10–15 cm
  • Spread: 30–45 cm, mat-forming
  • Flower Colour: Deep rose-pink
  • Flowering Period: Midsummer
  • Foliage: Mahogany-red, succulent, rounded leaves
  • Sunlight Requirements: Full sun
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil

Uses and Benefits: Sedum 'Voodoo' excels in dry slopes, rock gardens, borders, and containers, where it adds intense colour and texture with minimal input. Its weed-suppressing, spreading habit makes it perfect for covering bare soil in hot, exposed areas. This sedum is equally at home in modern minimalist plantings or bold prairie-inspired schemes where contrast and resilience are key.

Companion Plants: Pair 'Voodoo' with the soft pink spring blooms of Veronica 'Georgia Blue' for a cool counterpoint to its dark foliage. Add the fiery tones of Coreopsis 'Hot Paprika' to echo and intensify the warm colour palette. Round out the design with Andropogon 'Blackhawks', whose deep burgundy blades and dramatic fall colour mirror the richness of the sedum and bring striking vertical structure.

Care Instructions: Plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Water sparingly once established. Shear back spent flower stems after blooming, or leave for late-season interest. Divide every few years in spring to maintain density and vigour.

History: A standout selection from the Sedum spurium species, 'Voodoo' was bred for its unusually dark foliage and compact, spreading habit. Its rich colour and durable performance have made it a favourite among gardeners seeking bold, low-growing accents for dry, sunny locations.

Final Thoughts: With its sultry foliage and pollinator-friendly blooms, Sedum 'Voodoo' casts a bold spell across the summer garden—perfect for adding heat, contrast, and effortless structure to your sunny spaces.

Very happy
I was cautious about buying a fur product sight unseen. There can be so many variations in what you can get. Have to say I'm very happy with everything about this beautiful sheepskin. I've had different kinds of natural fur rugs , including a 90 pelt skunk skin rug! This sheepskin is well made and put together. It's an even soft white color, and only very faint fur/hide scent (to be expected) Gonna get a 2nd one and hope it's exactly the same.

Great Rug @ great price
I really wanted a large sheep skin rug that wasn't fake for my bedroom but didn't want to pay the high price. This was the best price i could find for the size i wanted. It worked out great! No weird smells, very fluffy, nice light color, and good size.

It's a good looking rug for the price!
The size is almost true to measurements which is super great when ordering a natural product! The backing is very nicely finished! No smell! Only comment on my 4 stars would be quality it's just ok, some spots are really soft and some are more ruff as if it was not top quality sheep, and a few random un brushed hair, beside that the color is super it's a creamy light yellow tint (more cream though) for the price I totally recommend this rug.

Better than you imagined...
I bought a 4'x6' from Safavieh 10 years ago and just received its replacement. I've slept on it every night and meditated on it every day. In short, I love it. It's the most comfortable surface I can imagine. Here's what you need to know. A sheepskin is just that, animal pelt(s). The 4x6 is four pelts sewn together. It will have a sheepskin smell, which will reduce over time. When it comes, it is rolled up and in a heavy clear poly sleeve, Open the end, not the side! This way if you need to return it, you can roll and slide it right back into the shipping sleeve. The dimensions you buy are approximate. It's a naturally variable product. You might prefer a medical sheepskin if you live in a hot climate. The fur on these is altered to make the hairs shorter. I think I will cover it with a bottom sheet from now on. It might last 20 years that way.
