The western cousin. Bigger berries, bluer fruit, and the same extraordinary wildlife value.

Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea, the Blue Elderberry, is the western counterpart of the American Black Elderberry, a fast-growing native shrub of the Pacific Coast and Rocky Mountain region that produces heavy clusters of blue-black berries with a distinctive silvery waxy bloom that gives the fruit its blue appearance. Like its eastern relative, it is one of the most productive and wildlife-supportive native shrubs you can plant, attracting pollinators during its white flower clusters in early summer and feeding dozens of bird and mammal species when the berries ripen in late summer and fall. It is also edible for humans, used for syrup, wine, jelly, and juice in the same ways as the eastern species. If you are looking to buy Blue Elderberry seeds or grow western elderberry from seed, this is the native shrub that does more per square foot than almost anything else in a western garden.

  • Heavy clusters of blue-black berries with silvery waxy bloom, distinctive and beautiful in late summer
  • White flower clusters in early summer attract native bees, wasps, beetles, and butterflies
  • Berries eaten by over 40 bird species and important mammals across the Pacific Coast and Rocky Mountain region
  • Fast-growing native shrub beginning to fruit within 2 to 3 years of planting
  • Used for elderberry syrup, wine, jelly, and juice in the same tradition as the eastern species

Things you probably did not know about the Blue Elderberry

It was one of the most important plants in the material culture of Pacific Coast Indigenous peoples. The Blue Elderberry was used for food, medicine, and tools by virtually every Indigenous nation across its range from British Columbia to Baja California. The hollow stems were made into flutes and clappers for ceremonial music. The fruit was dried for winter food. The bark and flowers were used medicinally. Few plants were as fully integrated into daily and ceremonial life across the Pacific Coast culture area.

The waxy bloom is edible and was used as a food coloring. The blue-white waxy coating on Blue Elderberry fruits, called pruinose bloom, is the same compound found on plums, grapes, and blueberries. It is perfectly edible and was used by Indigenous peoples to create a light blue-gray food coloring for ceremonial foods. The bloom intensifies in dry conditions and fades in wet ones, making fruit appearance highly variable between seasons.

It can reach 20 feet in a single year under ideal conditions. Blue Elderberry is among the fastest-establishing native shrubs in western North America. In moist, fertile soils with adequate water, young plants can produce extraordinary first-year growth. This speed is part of why it is used in restoration plantings along disturbed riparian corridors across the Pacific Coast states.

The flowers are used in cuisine as well as the berries. Elderflowers harvested before they fully open have a delicate muscat fragrance and are used to make elderflower cordial, fritters, tempura, and sparkling wine. The Blue Elderberry flower clusters are slightly larger than those of the eastern species and produce the same fragrant, culinary-quality blossoms that have made elderflower one of the most fashionable culinary ingredients in the past decade.

Fun for the first day, but just get the round balls.
Color: Green, Size: Medium (2-1/2 in (Pack of 2))
These balls do work, but they bouncy pretty much like a regular chuck it ball. They do NOT fit in the chuck it handheld ball launcher, which makes them a pain to throw. The green color also makes them somewhat challenging to find when the grass is long. That said, they do work as intended, and the dogs like them the same as all the other chuck it balls we own. As the person who had to throw them, my advice would be to just get the round balls that fit in the ball launcher. Durability: 9/10 they hood together better than the traditional balls without the hole (that crack down the seam over time). These have yet to crack despite the same wear and tear. Pros: durable, dogs like them, they do sink in water Cons: green color, hard to fit in handheld ball launcher

Winner!
Color: Green, Size: Medium (2-1/2 in (Pack of 2))
I recently got the BOUNCY DOG BALL TOY for my fur baby, and I'm thrilled to say that it's a total winner! The best feature of this interactive dog toy is its erratic bounce, which keeps my pup on their toes and makes every playtime session full of surprises. The squared corners of the ball cause it to bounce every which way when thrown, making it an exciting challenge for my dog to catch. And because it's compatible with the Chuckit! Ball Launchers, we can play fetch for hours on end without ever getting bored. One thing I love about this fetch toy is its durability. It's made of tough rubber that can withstand even the most aggressive chewers, and it's super easy to clean after a long day of play. Plus, with two balls included, we always have a backup when one inevitably gets lost.

good for puppies who like to eat pee pads
Color: Blue, Size: 28" x 34"
this is the only holder that worked for my puppy who loved chewing up pee pads!! good quality holder and the peace of mind makes the price worth it. it's easy to clean if they pee on the edges and helps puppies learn to stay on the pad. only downside in my opinion is that i have to fold the pee pad to make it fit well... not too much of an issue since pee pads already have a crease in them :) definitely recommend!! and i already bought two lol

Keeps the pad in place, and looks great.
Color: Dark Gray, Size: 14" x 17", Color: Dark Gray, Size: 14" x 17"
We bought this pee pad tray when we got our little Yorkie. We bought everything to match our white and gray home decor, so this was perfect for that. It's super easy to use. We buy the 22x22 Amazon brand pee pads, and they fit just right, and work great. You can put it on without fussing with folding anything if you want, but it's also very easy to fold the edges really quick for a cleaner look. We do both depending on how busy we are. I've attached pictures of what it looks like either way you do it, and how it looks in the kennel. It's nice that the tray still closes just fine without folding the edges on those busy mornings, and we are very pleased with it. It's very easy to clean. Usually we just swap the pad out, but we use Lysol wipes most of the time, because sometimes he tracks a little smear here or there on the ring of the tray. I'd soak it once a month just to get a full clean, but the pads are pretty good, so the Lysol wipes are sufficient for the most part. Our puppy was not affected by adding this tray to the pee pads he was originally trained on. It actually gave us peace of mind when he was tiny and would sometimes play with the pads. He didn't do it often, but he can't do it with this tray, which is good to know. It looks so nice in his kennel. We have this on one side, and his bed on the other. He's a small dog, so I don't know how well this size would work for a dog bigger than 20-25lbs full grown. Our's will only be 5-6lbs full grown and he has no trouble keeping everything on the tray, and has room for multiple potty times. I want to note that this tray is not 17x17 on the outside. That's the measurement of the pads you should get. It's more rectangular. If I remember, I will look for the measurements and add them to this review once posted, because I didn't realize the actual size when I ordered. UPDATED:Dimensions: 19.33"L x 16.53"W x 1.18"H Luckily, it fits perfect in half of our 24×36inch kennel, and I'm glad it's not any smaller or bigger. It would not have worked for our needs. I do recommend this. It helps with the look/aesthetics of your pups kennel, and protects the pad from the puppy flipping it and playing with it. It also keeps the mess from getting on his bedding, which makes life a little easier. I hope this and these pictures help. UPDATE 7/2/20: Our Yorkie is now basically full grown and just over 5lbs vs the 2lbs he was in these picture, and he still fits perfectly on the tray with a couple inches on each side to spare. I also wanted to update that this didn't seem to slow, and definitely didn't stop his progress in potty training outside, which was a big concern of mine. Once we got really focused with taking him out on schedule, &ALWAYS AS SOON AS he opened his eyes, then of course rewarding with praise &a half of a little training treat after each time using the potty, as well as any time he alerted us that he needed to go outside. He is totally potty trained outside right now, and has been since around or before the holidays. We still keep this in his kennel for those times we may over sleep or when we're not at home incase he can't hold it, especially since he's still a puppy. He has had an occasion pee or poop on the pee pad over the last 7mnths, but it's been rare. I still plan to keep this in until he gets a little older. I'd much rather just switch a pad out than clean a big mess, and launder all of his bedding because of an accident.

Great idea
Color: Blue, Size: 28" x 34"
This is a great product mainly because it holds down the pads and if anyone has tried to do the inside to outside training that was a huge plus to have it not blowing away constantly the only reason. For the 4 star and not 5 is the middle tends to have a lump of bunch up cause it does not have a section to cover but only way to make this better is to have the top be completely seperate but either way better then most I have tried
