ZZ Plant is the Perfect for Low-Maintenance, Air-Purifying Houseplant

ZZ Plant Thrives in Low Light

The ZZ Plant is one of the easiest houseplants to grow, thriving in low light and requiring minimal care. With glossy, deep-green leaves and natural air-purifying qualities, the Zanzibar Gem adds beauty and health benefits to any indoor space.

Some common names for this east African native plant are Zanzibar gem, ZZ plant, Zuzu plant, aroid palm, eternity plant, or emerald palm. The botanical name is Zamioculcas zamiifolia which is where it got the nickname ZZ.

This tropical perennial plant is commonly grown as a houseplant for its glossy green foliage and easy care. The ZZ Plant flower appears in late summer or early fall and is light yellow or bronze in color. The flower form is a spadix that is commonly found on all aroid plants. It is uncommon to see this houseplant flower indoors.

This unique tropical plant been shown to reduce toxicity indoors and purify the air. There are many other ZZ Plant benefits including lower blood pressure, reduced stress, and boosting productivity.

ZZ Houseplants thrive in low light conditions and are easy to grow.

Fun fact: Zanzibar Plant grows from an underground rhizome that resembles a potato.

ZZ Plant Care Guide

Caring for a Zanzibar Plant (ZZ Plant) is a breeze — that’s one of the main reasons people love this tropical beauty. It’s incredibly low-maintenance and can thrive almost anywhere, whether you’ve got bright light or a low-light corner. Just keep it out of direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

ZZ Plants typically grow around 2 to 3 feet tall, though some can reach up to 5 feet when fully mature. If you live in USDA zone 10 or warmer, you can even grow it outdoors. In cooler areas, it makes the perfect indoor houseplant.

When it comes to soil, make sure it drains well. Use a pot with drainage holes, or add a layer of gravel or marbles at the bottom to help with excess water. And remember, less is more when it comes to watering your ZZ Plant.

Great for SuperChewers. Keeps my Golden busy.
Color: Bear, Color: Bear
My dog loves it and it keeps her busy for a while. She actually pulls it out of her toy basket and brings it to me when she wants it filled. I break her treats into some pieces that are easy to get and some a little harder. This way she doesn’t get them too fast or loose interest if they’re harder to get. Also, she’s had it for 3 months and there’s barely a mark on it and she’s still a puppy that chews her toys to pieces.

Mostly happy
Color: Grape
Have a 1 1/2 yr old Belgian Malinois who needs things to do. I bought these and he loved it. Bad thing, it took him 1 day to chew the rope off both grape and pineapple. The stems on the cherry were also chewed off. The rest of the toy is intact and he still loves it.

Came apart.
Color: Cherries
We were playing with it and the green part pulled off of the red part. I'm pretty sure that is not supposed to happen. I took the green part away from the dog because that part is too small for my pup to play with. But we continue to play with the red part. My dog likes the texture and the bounciness.
