The specific name hastatum comes from Latin and means "armed with a spear".

Philodendron hastatum is a tropical climbing plant in the araceae family. It is native to Brazil and thrives in the warm, humid, and shady undergrowth of tropical rainforests.

As a houseplant, it is one of the most popular Philodendron varieties. Its impressive leaves reach lengths of up to 50 cm and are beautifully silvery.

Botanical description.

Philodendron hastatum originates from southeastern Brazil in the Minas Gerais and Rio regions. The name "hastatum" means "spear-shaped" and refers to the adult leaves.

Appearance.

The leaves actually look like a pointed spearhead and can grow up to 50 cm long and about 15 cm wide with two distinct basal lobes (the "ears" found at the top of the leaf). In the "Silver Sword" variety, the unique, silvery color on the upper side is also striking.

When the plant is young, the leaves are arrow-shaped, but over time they lengthen and become three-lobed. The undersides of the leaves have a coppery color. The flowers consist of a pistil surrounded by a sheathing leaf, but it rarely flowers indoors.

The leaves have a truly metallic gray appearance in the right light, making this easy-care species a truly unique detail, especially when placed among other plants.

Care.

This plant prefers bright, indirect light and warm temperatures and high humidity. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. In dry environments, such as in winter, it may be helpful to use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray of water and pebbles.

Philodendron hastatum prefers a light and airy soil mixed with perlite, bark or coconut . Water only when the soil is dry, overwatering can damage the roots. Check the soil moisture with a finger before watering.

During the growing season (March–September) it should be fertilized regularly with organic fertilizer, e.g. worm castings . Like most Philodendron species, P. hastatum is a climber and needs a stable support in the form of a coconut or moss pole that imitates a tree to be able to grow tall and form large leaves. One of Ann Patchett’s best novels.
Format: Hardcover
“Whistler,” by Ann Patchett, Harper, 320 pages, June 2, 2026. Daphne and Jonathan Fuller are visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art when Jonathan notices an older man following them. They go up to the next floor and the man is still following them. It turns out he is Eddie Triplett, Daphne’s former stepfather, who was married to her mother for a little more than year when Daphne was nine. They haven’t seen each other in almost 45 years, but he recognizes her. It is a chance meeting. Daphne teaches literature at a private school and Jonathan is a retired hospital administrator. Eddie is an editor at Random House, but he wasn’t at the office this day because of a water main break. Daphne visits her sister, Leda, to tell her about the encounter. Flashback to 1980, when Leda was having an appendectomy, Eddie was driving Daphne to the hospital in a snowstorm and they were in an accident. Daphne had to climb out of a car window and walk for help. After that, her mother divorced Eddie. Of course, there’s more to what happened. This is a wonderful story about adults looking back at the choices they’ve made and the choices that others made for them. It is about the small things that impact our lives and memories of childhood. It is about families, love and bravery. This is one of Ann Patchett’s best novels.

Another amazing book from a talented author
Format: Kindle
This is one of my favorite authors so I knew I would enjoy this book and once again, the characters seemed so real like people I knew personally. I very much enjoyed Daphne and Eddie’s relationship and I loved learning about Eddie and Daphne’s mother’s life together and why things played out the way they did. This book truly shows how people can impact us forever regardless of how long they were in our life. There was so much beauty in this book despite the loss and sadness at times. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A book that hugs back.
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I picked this book for my brother-in-law when we were celebrating my sister’s pregnancy, and the title ‘Why a daughter needs a dad’ sealed the deal. The illustrations are beautiful and full of tenderness. The messages on each page are simple and meaningful. I could so clearly picture him reading it to his baby girl someday. It’s the kind of book that isn’t just read – it’s felt. A thoughtful gift for someone you love – especially during such a special season of life.
