Coreopsis grandiflora 'Heliot'
Also known as Largeflower Tickseed, Large-flower Tickseed, Common Coreopsis
Coreopsis grandiflora, often referred to as large-flowered tickseed, is a delightful flower found in a variety of places like prairies, meadows, open woods, thickets, roadsides, and open ground stretching from sunny Florida to Texas and New Mexico, as well as up to Georgia, Missouri, and Kansas. These charming flowers grow in clumps and can reach a height of about 2 feet. They have a daisy-like appearance, showcasing vibrant, deep yellow rays that gently surround a golden yellow disk at the center. Each flower sits gracefully atop a slender, upright stem that can soar up to 2 feet high.
Typically, these lovely blossoms bloom from late spring through late summer, sometimes even into autumn. However, with a little care, like regular deadheading, their bloom period can be extended. The upper leaves are delightfully pinnatifid and deeply lobed, while the lower leaves are long and lobeless. Coreopsis has even ventured beyond its native range, thriving through garden introductions and natural escapes across the eastern and central U.S.
This resilient plant flourishes in dry to medium-moist, well-drained soil under the warm sun. It also thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils with excellent drainage. Remarkably, it's tolerant of heat, humidity, and even drought conditions. By promptly deadheading spent flower stalks, you'll encourage more blooms while managing self-seeding. Although it enjoys self-seeding, it can sometimes become a bit weedy when spreading by rhizomes. Although it has a shorter life span, its ability to self-seed helps keep your garden looking wonderful.
If the plants start to sprawl out or look a bit unkempt, don't hesitate to give them a hard cutback in summer. When situated in borders or formal garden areas, division every 2-3 years will help keep them robust and thriving. You can even enjoy them as annuals.
