The Areca Palm, known as Dypsis lutescens, is one of the most beloved indoor clumping  palms, known for its graceful, feathery fronds and ability to enhance indoor spaces with a tropical feel. The plant is also known for its ability to improve air quality by filtering out toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene.  Unlike some palms that require extensive care, Areca Palm is relatively simple to grow and responds well to consistent watering and humidity, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Native to Madagascar, this palm has gained worldwide popularity as both a houseplant and an outdoor landscape feature in warm climates. Its attractive appearance, air-purifying properties, and low-maintenance nature make it a favorite choice for homes, offices, and commercial spaces. It is also known as a butterfly palm, golden cane palm, and yellow palm.

Areca Palm is a clustering palm, meaning multiple stems emerge from the base, creating a full and bushy appearance.

The leaves are long, arching, and pinnate, with a lush green color that adds vibrancy to any setting.

When grown indoors, the plant remains relatively compact, while outdoor specimens can develop into tall, striking features in tropical gardens.

When growing indoors, your Areca Palm typically grows up to 7 feet tall in height, making it an excellent floor plant for homes and offices.

When grown outdoors, this Areca palm tree can reach an impressive height of 30 feet, with a spread of about 12 feet wide.

Indoor Areca Palms rarely bloom, but outdoor plants may produce small, yellowish-white flowers from late spring to summer. These flowers grow in clusters along the base of the fronds and are followed by small, oval-shaped fruits that transition from green to yellow and eventually turn black when fully mature. The fruits contain seeds but are not typically used for propagation, as division or offsets are preferred methods for growing new plants.

Recognized by NASA’s Clean Air Study, Areca Palm helps remove toxins like xylene, toluene, and carbon dioxide, improving indoor air quality. This palm releases moisture into the air, making it ideal for homes with dry air, especially during winter.

When and How to Water Your Areca Palm

The Areca palm is drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for those looking for a low-maintenance tropical plant. While it prefers consistent moisture, it can survive short dry spells without severe damage. Overwatering is a more significant risk than underwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Ensure the soil dries slightly between waterings to maintain the right balance.

In the spring and summer, during its active growing season, the Areca palm tree requires more frequent watering. In warm temperatures, watering once every 5–7 days is ideal, depending on humidity levels. If it is grown outdoors, rainfall can supplement its needs, but manual watering should be adjusted accordingly. Always check the top 1–2 inches of soil before watering to prevent oversaturation.

In fall and winter, when growth slows down, the watering frequency should be reduced. Watering once every 10–14 days is sufficient to prevent dehydration while avoiding waterlogging. Indoor plants may require slightly more frequent watering if exposed to dry air from heating systems, so monitoring humidity levels is essential.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Areca Palm Tree

For indoor growth as a houseplant, your Areca palms thrive in bright, indirect light for at least 4-6 hours a day.

A location near an east- or south-facing window with filtered sunlight is ideal. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but growth may slow down, and the leaves may become less vibrant.

To promote healthy foliage, rotating the plant occasionally ensures even exposure to light.

Artificial grow lights can also supplement light if natural brightness is insufficient.

For outdoor cultivation, the Areca palm tree prefers partial to full sun, requiring 4–6 hours of bright, indirect light daily.

Morning sunlight is ideal, while intense afternoon rays may scorch the fronds, especially in hotter climates. If grown in a container, moving it to a shaded area during peak summer months can prevent leaf damage.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Areca palms grow best in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with good aeration. A high-quality potting mix with peat, sand, and perlite ensures proper drainage. Planet Desert has specialized potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive.

A balanced liquid NPK fertilizer at a 5-10-5 ratio applied once a year in the spring during the growing season promotes lush foliage and robust growth. Slow-release palm fertilizers with essential micronutrients like magnesium and iron also help prevent yellowing leaves. During the dormant season, fertilization should be stopped to avoid unnecessary growth that may weaken the plant in cooler months.

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors as a houseplant, the Areca palm plant thrives in temperatures between 65–75°F with humidity levels above 40%. Dry air can cause leaf browning, so misting or using a humidity tray can maintain optimal moisture levels. Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts or heating vents, as sudden temperature fluctuations can cause stress.

For outdoor cultivation, Areca palm is hardy in USDA zones 10–11, thriving in warm, humid conditions.

It can tolerate brief temperature drops but should be protected from frost.

The ideal outdoor humidity level is 50% or higher, making it best suited for tropical or subtropical environments.

For those in cooler climates, container-growing allows for seasonal relocation indoors.

Wildlife – Areca Palm Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Areca palm produces small, yellowish-white flowers that attract a variety of pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. While not a primary pollinator plant, its presence in a tropical garden can support local insect populations.

Butterflies
Bees
Hummingbirds
Lady Bugs
Multi Pollinators
Other Birds

According to the ASPCA, the Areca palm is non-toxic to humans, cats, dogs, and birds, making it a safe choice for pet owners. Unlike some palms that pose toxicity risks, Areca palm does not contain harmful compounds that could endanger household animals.

How to Propagate Areca Palm

Areca palms can be easily propagated through division or by planting seeds. To propagate through division, carefully separate the offshoots from the main plant and replant them in well-draining soil. Root division is best done in spring or early summer when growth is most active. If propagating from seeds, soak them in warm water for 24 hours before planting them in a mixture of peat moss and perlite. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens) is a stunning, easy-to-care-for plant that thrives both indoors and outdoors. It is a clustering palm tree with multiple stems, produces a full, bushy appearance with long, arching, pinnate leaves in lush green, adding vibrancy to any setting. Its elegant fronds, air-purifying benefits, and adaptability make it a favorite among plant enthusiasts. Whether placed in a bright living room corner, an office, or a tropical garden, this palm adds beauty and a refreshing touch of greenery. With its elegant feathery fronds, ability to purify air, and pet-friendly nature, it’s a popular choice among plant enthusiasts. Proper care, including adequate watering, indirect sunlight, and occasional fertilization, ensures vibrant growth and longevity. Order your very own Areca Palm for sale today!

Nice Product and Customer Service
I ordered this BlastIR Wireless Pro IR Repeater from Sewell to replace a wired version of an IR repeater from another company. We have moved our TV on to a wall location and are in the process of hiding all the wiring out of sight behind walls and/or in a cabinet. We still have some wires to go, but this product has enabled us to eliminate the IR wiring all together. It's a real improvement in both looks and performance over the cheaper, wired version we originally tried. The BlasterIR's Receiver is the component that faces the room and receives the IR signal from our remote controls. It's small enough to fit in the space between our sound bar and the bottom of the TV. It's range is great for our room size (about 22' long and 18' wide) and picks up the remotes signal from a side angle that's almost parallel to the TV itself. The receiver is powered through one of the USB ports integrated into the TV (although the device itself supports either a USB or regular plug-in option). I haven't used them yet but Sewell appears to have provided a few options to help with affixing the IR devices in their final positions including some adhesive pads and a magnetic pad option as well. I'm still playing around with the permanent placement of the IR Blaster Emitter. It sits inside a closed cabinet and faces the concealed cable box receiver, router and DVR components. It retransmits the various IR signals it receives from the IR receiver by blasting that signal to anything it faces. I just placed it in the cabinet about 5" away from the devices I wanted to control, plugged it in and it worked with no other set up. So far the BlastIR is working seamlessly and with much better function response time than the cheaper IR version we'd tried at first. The lag time between when a button is pressed on the remote control and the action taking place on the device I'm communicating with is minimal. The emitter itself is plugged into an outlet on a surge protector powering the other in-cabinet devices, although it too could be powered via the provided USB connection if desired. As a note, we did experience a shipping issue during our ordering process. The order it self was processed quickly and shipped in a timely manner. However, there was an issue with our actual receipt of the product and the USPS who reported it delivered to our mailbox when in fact it had not been. Regardless, we reached out to Sewell directly and they quickly resolved the issue for us with no problems and in a timely manner. I would recommend both this IR Blaster Pro product as well as Sewell as a trusted company itself.

Does NOT Transmit Through Walls
Quick and easy setup! Works great within the room. However, will not work effectively between walls (i.e. - AV closet to living room).

Works perfectly - great product
My MBR TV set-up incorporates a cable box set up in a closet about 50 feet from the TV (hung over a fireplace). When it was set up the A/V used a wired infra-red set up that was wired thru the walls, under the floor, into the closet. Unfortunately some mice nibbled on the wiring and it does not work. I have tried everything including the Next Generation extender (over the years bought 6 of them for different TV's) and most recently the Startech. The Next Generation have not been updated in years and over time completely lose their ability to operate. No customer service at all; emails go into a black hole. I had high hopes for the Startech. Easy to set up and worked out of the box. The problem is the lag time. I could live with it when watching live TV, but it was totally impossible when it came to playing back programs from the DVR (which is cloud based). I was losing hope until I tried the Sewell Blaster. Took me less then 5 minutes to set up and it worked instantly. Little or no lag to speak of and I couldn't be happier. NB. Speaking of Sewell, the absolutely BEST way to control your HDMI based TV is the Sewell Direct SW-30062 Dual Band InjectIR sold by Amazon for $55. This is truly plug 'n play and operates with absolutely no lag. Bought 2 of these to operate TV's in my apartment where I had to hide boxes in closets. Well made, great instructions (coordinated with the devices) and I just love this product. I bought mine direct from Sewell ) same price) because I couldn't find them on Amazon when I needed them, but they have a great return policy and I'm told great C/S. If you can't use these then go for the Blaster.

This vacuum is totally worth the extra money! I LOVE MY YELLOW VAC!
Configuration: Vacuum
Don't hesitate to spend a few more dollars on this vacuum, because you won't be sorry over time. I had done extensive research on purchasing my next vacuum when I came across this model. A friend owns one of the dark green limited edition models and had great things to say about it. I tried hers out and that was that. I loved it. She also bought the floor attachment for wood or flat surface flooring that is already included with this model. I loved that attachment when I tried hers out. It glides across the floor and sucks everything up in it’s path. The Calima had everything I wanted in one package and I really loved the cheerful yellow color. The only thing I didn't like was the price of course. However, in this case I do believe you get what you pay for. Luckily, I was able to get an Amazon Warehouse like new Calima with the floor attachment for ever so slightly more than my friend’s vac plus the extra floor attachment would've cost me. YES!!! In my 16 years married life, I have bought and used a Panasonic, a Dyson and most recently a Sears Progressive (discontinued red model). Their life span has been 4-6 years each. I vowed this time to do some research up front, so I can stop my side job of buying new vacuum cleaners. I found I loved canister vacs thanks to the Progressive, so that was my number one priority. Proven longevity was the next priority. When my vac arrived, I immeditely took it out of the box and started vacuuming away. I have family members with allergies and one with allergies and asthma. My old vacuums never did the cleaning job of this little, lightweight yellow sunshine! I enjoy vacuuming again. It is so quiet that every time I use it, my daughter comments on it. It turns on a dime and is so easy to maneuver. The cord is a perfect length and winds up in a snap. I do like the digital features (that can be touched with your toes-no need to bend down) of changing the suction power. I considered other models with the manual dial and even saw one at Bed Bath and Beyond. It wasn't difficult, but the digital is better in my opinion. Compartments open and close with such ease unlike my Progressive, which I had to wrench open every time I needed to change the bag or get an attachment out. I actually broke the clasp off that allows you to change the bag within months of first getting the Progressive. The Progressive and my other vacs for that matter, were all made of cheap plastic. The Miele surpasses all of my other vacs by leaps and bounds! This company makes great vacuums! Thank you Miele and thank you Amazon!

It will change your mind about vacuuming
Configuration: Vacuum
I have Persian carpets, hardwood floors, brick, and tile and this vacuum works well on all of them. I also have short haired dogs and cats and live in the woods so there is a lot to vacuum up here. I have always had Kenmore canister vacuums that lasted forever and I wanted to get a vacuum cleaner that I wouldn't have to replace every few years so spent the extra money to hopefully get what they promise in that regard. I also spent the extra money on this C3 model because it is made in Germany. The body is heavy plastic but lightweight and has a great little rubber bumper around it so it won't mark your walls or break the plastic when you crash into something. The accessories are well made with no strange plastic seams that catch dirt. The hose and tube are made of heavy materials. I have to carry the canister up three different types of stairs including a narrow spiral staircase and it is very easy to do this. The body is slim enough so that it isn't awkward to carry up stairs while holding the hose and tube too. The machine is well designed, something I look for in everything I purchase. It is easy to change speeds, and turn on and off with your foot so you don't have to bend over everytime you want to turn it off or change the speed. The retractable cord is super nice, and something I was used to with the Kenmore. It keeps the cord safe from nicks and also makes it easier to transport and store. A couple of things I miss from my old Kenmore that I didn't get on this model was the on/off switch on the handle, the ability to go from floor to carpet with the beater brush, and 360 degree swivel hose at the attachment to the canister. This machine does come with the parquet twister attachment, which I read from many reviews was a great tool and can agree wholly that it is, and you can certainly leave it on to vacuum your carpets, but the turbo brush which comes with it too, is a much better cleaning tool for low pile rugs. So I vacuum all of my non-carpeted areas first, then switch the tool and go back and vacuum the rugs. It is a bit of a pain but not terrible. The biggest issue is that you have to carry the extra floor tool with you when you climb the stairs holding the vacuum. Again, not really terrible just a bit of a pain. I have had no issues with the turbo brush getting clogged with hair, but then I have short haired pets. I did choose to get the complete mainly because the canister holds the other attachments (crevice, upholstery, and wall brushes) inside making it easy to transport and less likely to lose the tools. The variable speed motor is soooo much quieter than any vacuum I've ever owned. My pets don't freak out when I vacuum now. The turbo tool has a switch on it which allows the suction to be reduced if you are pulling the rug off the floor. There is also a cool little metal strip down the back of the handle to discharge static electricity. You just have to keep your hand on it while you vacuum. This is a good example of thoughtful design. Because I was replacing a nearly defunct vacuum cleaner I was a vacuuming maniac for the first week I had the Miele. My children thought I had lost my mind and wondered how I could possibly be so excited about a vacuum cleaner...it was a change from my focus on other things, like riding bikes and stuff like that. But my house had become a dust bomb and after vacuuming one rug and watching the dull red change to bright red with a beautiful pattern that I guess I had gotten used to not seeing anymore...I started vacuuming everything in sight (that you could vacuum of course). Almost everything returned to its original color and I filled the vacuum cleaner bag quickly. I also love that the bag and filters keep the dust from reentering the house...so you aren't just moving it around to vacuum up again next week. And probably, most of all, even above the excellent job the machine does on removing dirt from carpets and upholstery, cleaning floors (the parquet twister is awesome for getting right up next to the baseboard at weird angles), is the yellow color. How can you not like vacuuming with a bright yellow vacuum?
